Abstract

A disposable optical format for lancing the skin of a patient and harvesting blood to determine blood chemistries such as glucose level includes a housing with openings defining an optical path. A translucent hollow capillary tube with multiple planar sides and an end cleaved to a sharp edge is mounted in the housing. The sides of the tube are formed of an optical material such as fused silica. Significantly less pain, high probability of blood harvesting and improved overall test time are achieved with integrating the lance, harvest and analysis operation.

Claims

1. A method of harvesting a blood sample, the method comprising the acts of:

providing a lance body defined by a multi-sided tube wherein each side is planar and of a material that allows transmission of light, the multi-sided tube including a first end having a sharp point;

piercing the skin with the first end of the multi-sided tube; and

harvesting the blood sample after piercing the skin.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the tube is square.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the outside dimension of the tube is less than 300 μ

m.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the tube is rectangular.

5. The method of claim 1 further providing a housing mounted around a portion of the tube.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the tube has an inside surface, the inside surface including a reagent.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the material is fused silica.

8. The method of claim 1 wherein the tube is a hollow capillary tube.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the sharp point is cleaved at an angle of from 30 to 60 degrees.

10. A method of harvesting a blood sample, the method comprising the acts of:

providing a housing and a lance, the housing having a first side, a second side, and openings formed in the first side and the second side for passage of light through the housing, the lance being mounted in the housing, the lance having a sharp end;

piercing the skin with the sharp end; and

harvesting the blood sample after piercing the skin.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance is tubular.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the lance is tubular with at least one flat portion adjacent one of the openings in the first side and the second side.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance is of a square tubular configuration.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the outside dimension of the tube is less than 300 μ

m.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance comprises fused silica.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance further comprises an analyte indicator.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance further comprises reductive hexokinase therein.

18. The method of claim 10 wherein the lance further comprises glucose dehydrogenese therein.

19. The method of claim 10 wherein the sharp point is cleaved at an angle of from 30 to 60 degrees.

20. A method of making an optical format with an integrated lance, the method comprising the acts of:

forming a square capillary tube of fused silica, the tube having a first end and a second end;

cleaving the first end of the tube to form a sharp point adapted to pierce the skin and harvest a sample; and

securing a housing on the second end of the tube.
