1. A method of providing e-mail service, the method comprising the steps of:
- at a handheld device, receiving, via a wireless wide area network, a first e-mail message that includes a repackaged second e-mail message, wherein the second e-mail message was sent to an e-mail account associated with a host system on a local area network;
at the handheld device, stripping the packaging of the first e-mail message from the second e-mail message;
at the handheld device, receiving a user-input for at least one of opening the second e-mail message, deleting the second e-mail message, replying to the second e-mail message, and forwarding the second e-mail message;
generating a third e-mail message having status information related to the second e-mail message therein, wherein the status information corresponds to a change of status of the second e-mail message based upon the user-input; and
sending the third e-mail message to the e-mail account.

Abstract
Systems and methods for remotely updating e-mail message status information for messages forwarded from a desktop e-mail account to a wireless handheld device are provided. The systems and methods of the present invention consist of a software solution that enables users of wireless handheld appliances to: access corporate e-mail by forwarding incoming e-mail messages from the user'"'"'s corporate account to the handheld appliance; act upon the received e-mail messages at the handheld appliance; and to have the system update the status of the acted upon messages at the user'"'"'s corporate e-mail account.

at a host system, receiving a first e-mail message addressed to a first e-mail account associated with the host system;
at the host system, providing a visual status indicator for the first e-mail message to a user of the first e-mail account, wherein the visual status indicator for the first e-mail indicates at least one of whether the first e-mail message has been read, whether the first e-mail message has been deleted, whether the first e-mail message has been replied to, and whether the first e-mail message has be forwarded, and wherein the visual status indicator allows the user to visibly determine the status of the first e-mail message;
at the host system, repackaging the first e-mail message into a second e-mail message, wherein the second e-mail message is addressed to a second e-mail account associated with a wireless handheld device;
at the host system, forwarding the second e-mail message to the second e-mail account;
at the host system, receiving a third e-mail message, the third e-mail message including updated status information related to the first e-mail message; and
