Abstract

A receiver includes a matched filter, and an M of N detector is coupled to the matched filter for determining potential synch pulses occurring M of N times. A cluster detector is coupled to the M of N detector for determining a plurality of synch pulse clusters based upon the potential synch pulses. A peak detector is coupled to the cluster detector for determining respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters. Each synch pulse cluster has a cluster width associated therewith, and the peak detector removes synch pulse clusters exceeding a cluster width threshold.

Claims

1. A receiver comprising:

a matched filter;

an M of N detector coupled to said matched filter for determining potential synch pulses occurring M of N times;

a cluster detector coupled to said M of N detector for determining a plurality of synch pulse clusters based upon the potential synch pulses; and

a peak detector coupled to said cluster detector for determining respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters.

2. A receiver according to claim 1 wherein each synch pulse cluster has a cluster width associated therewith;

and wherein said peak detector removes synch pulse clusters exceeding a cluster width threshold.

3. A receiver according to claim 2 wherein said peak detector detects a synch pulse based upon a first synch pulse cluster after removal of synch pulse clusters exceeding the cluster width threshold.

4. A receiver according to claim 1 wherein each synch pulse cluster comprises a plurality of potential synch pulses occurring consecutively.

5. A receiver according to claim 1 wherein said M of N detector comprises a binary integrator.

6. A receiver according to claim 1 wherein said matched filter is matched to the synch pulses and generates matched filter output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the peaks corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses;

and further comprising an orthogonal filter being inversely matched to the synch pulses and generating orthogonal filtered output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the valleys corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses; and

wherein said peak detector is also coupled to said orthogonal filter and detects the respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

7. A receiver according to claim 6 wherein said matched filter and said orthogonal filter have inputs coupled in parallel for receiving an input signal comprising a plurality of data pulses and a plurality of synch pulses.

8. A receiver according to claim 6 wherein said peak detector detects the respective synch pulses based upon a largest difference between the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

9. A receiver according to claim 1 further comprising:

a non-coherent integrator coupled to an output of said matched filter for non-coherently integrating samples accumulated by said matched filter; and

a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector coupled to an output of said non-coherent integrator for comparing the non-coherently integrated samples accumulated by said matched filter to a noise threshold.

10. A receiver according to claim 9 further comprising a noise estimator coupled to said CFAR detector for setting the noise threshold based upon the input signal.

11. A receiver according to claim 1 wherein each synch pulse comprises a frequency hopped synch pulse.

12. A receiver comprising:

a matched filter;

a non-coherent integrator coupled to an output of said matched filter for non-coherently integrating samples accumulated by said matched filter;

a constant false alarm rate (CFAR) detector coupled to an output of said non-coherent integrator for comparing the non-coherently integrated samples accumulated by said matched filter to a noise threshold.

an M of N detector coupled to said CFAR detector for generating potential synch pulses occurring M of N times;

a cluster detector coupled to said M of N detector for determining a plurality of synch pulse clusters based upon the potential synch pulses; and

a peak detector coupled to said cluster detector for detecting respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters.

13. A receiver according to claim 12 wherein each synch pulse cluster has a cluster width associated therewith;

and wherein said peak detector removes synch pulse clusters exceeding a cluster width threshold.

14. A receiver according to claim 13 wherein said peak detector detects a synch pulse based upon a first synch pulse cluster after removal of synch pulse clusters exceeding the cluster width threshold.

15. A receiver according to claim 12 wherein each synch pulse cluster comprises a plurality of potential synch pulses occurring consecutively.

16. A receiver according to claim 12 wherein said M of N detector comprises a binary integrator.

17. A receiver according to claim 12 wherein said matched filter is matched to the synch pulses and generates matched filter output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the peaks corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses;

and further comprising an orthogonal filter being inversely matched to the synch pulses and generating orthogonal filtered output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the valleys corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses; and

wherein said peak detector is also coupled to said orthogonal filter and detects the respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

18. A receiver according to claim 17 wherein said matched filter and said orthogonal filter have inputs coupled in parallel for receiving an input signal comprising a plurality of data pulses and a plurality of synch pulses.

19. A receiver according to claim 17 wherein said peak detector detects the respective synch pulses based upon a largest difference between the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

20. A receiver according to claim 12 further comprising a noise estimator coupled to said CFAR detector for setting the noise threshold based upon the input signal.

21. A receiver according to claim 12 wherein each synch pulse comprises a frequency hopped synch pulse.

22. A method for detecting synch pulses in a receiver comprising a matched filter, an M of N detector coupled to the matched filter, and a cluster detector coupled to the matched filter, the method comprising:

generating a plurality of matched filter output signals based upon the matched filter receiving an input signal comprising a plurality of synch pulses;

determining potential synch pulses in the plurality of matched filter output signals occurring M of N times;

determining a plurality of synch pulse clusters based upon the potential synch pulses occurring M of N times; and

detecting respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters.

23. A method according to claim 22 wherein each synch pulse cluster has a cluster width associated therewith;

and further comprising removing synch pulse clusters exceeding a cluster width threshold.

24. A method according to claim 23 wherein the detecting comprises detecting a synch pulse based upon a first synch pulse cluster after removal of synch pulse clusters exceeding the cluster width threshold.

25. A method according to claim 22 wherein the matched filter is matched to the synch pulses and generates matched filter output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the peaks corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses;

the receiver further comprising an orthogonal filter being inversely matched to the synch pulses and generating orthogonal filtered output signals comprising a plurality of peaks and valleys with at least one of the valleys corresponding to at least one of the synch pulses; and

wherein the detecting comprises detecting the respective synch pulses based upon the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

26. A method according to claim 25 wherein the receiver comprises a peak detector for performing the detecting, the peak detector detecting the respective synch pulses based upon a largest difference between the synch pulse clusters and the corresponding orthogonal filter output signals.

27. A method according to claim 22 further comprising:

non-coherently integrating samples accumulated by the matched filter; and

comparing the non-coherently integrated samples accumulated by the matched filter to a noise threshold.

28. A method according to claim 27 further comprising setting the noise threshold based upon the input signal.
