Abstract

An assembly for joining tissue is provided and includes an anvil assembly and a body portion juxtaposed with respect to one another along a shaft and arranged so as to be approximated with respect to one another; and an applicator supported on the anvil assembly and configured for retaining a wound treatment material therein and for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom. A method for joining tissue is provided and includes the steps of dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator so as to distribute wound treatment material onto at least one of a first tissue section and a second tissue section; and approximating the anvil assembly and the body portion to one another so that the first tissue section and the second tissue section are in contact with one another with the dispensed wound treatment material interposed there between.

Claims

1. An assembly for joining tissue portions, comprising:

an anvil assembly and a body portion juxtaposed with respect to one another along a shaft and arranged so as to be approximated with respect to one another; and

an applicator disposed between the body portion and anvil assembly and configured for retaining a wound treatment material therein, the applicator having channels arranged for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom onto an interface between the tissue portions.

2. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the wound treatment material is at least one of an adhesive, a sealant, a hemostat, and a medicament.

3. The assembly according to claim 2, wherein the applicator includes a sleeve operatively connected to the anvil assembly, wherein the wound treatment material is retained within and dispensed from the sleeve.

4. The assembly according to claim 3, wherein the applicator includes an ampoule selectively positionable within the sleeve, wherein the wound treatment material is retained within and dispensed from the ampoule.

5. The assembly according to claim 4, wherein the applicator includes a manifold supported on the anvil assembly, wherein the manifold defines the channels therein for directing a flow of wound treatment material onto the interface between the tissue portions.

6. The assembly according to claim 5, wherein the manifold is supported on the shaft.

7. The assembly according to claim 6, wherein each channel of the manifold is in fluid communication with the sleeve and the ampoule.

8. The assembly according to claim 7, wherein the manifold extends radially outward from the shaft and wherein each channel formed therein is radially oriented.

9. The assembly according to claim 8, wherein the applicator includes a seal interposed between the sleeve and the ampoule.

10. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the applicator and the shaft are complementarily configured to form a releasable connection therebetween.

11. The assembly according to claim 1, wherein the body portion carries a plurality of surgical staples in an annular configuration, the surgical staples being deployable against the anvil.

12. The assembly according to claim 11, further comprising an annular knife disposed radially inwardly of the staples.

13. The assembly according to claim 4, wherein the shaft and the sleeve form a plunger for compressing the amouple and dispensing the wound treatment material.

14. The assembly according to claim 13, wherein the tubular sleeve includes a portion through which the interior of the tubular sleeve is visible.

15. The assembly according to claim 14, wherein the portion of the tubular sleeve comprises an aperture.

16. The assembly according to claim 14, wherein the portion of the tubular sleeve comprises a window.

17. The assembly according to claim 14, wherein the ampoule comprises a cartridge for containing the wound treatment material.

18. The assembly according to claim 17, wherein the cartridge is arranged to direct the wound treatment material in a distal direction.

19. An assembly for joining tissue portions, comprising:

an anvil assembly and a body portion juxtaposed with respect to one another along a shaft and arranged so as to be approximated with respect to one another; and

an applicator disposed between the body portion and anvil assembly, the applicator defining a chamber for retaining an ampoule of wound treatment material therein, the applicator having channels arranged for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom.

20. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the wound treatment material is at least one of an adhesive, a sealant, a hemostat, and a medicament.

21. The assembly according to claim 20, wherein the applicator includes a sleeve operatively connected to the anvil assembly, the sleeve defining the chamber, wherein the wound treatment material is retained within and dispensed from the sleeve.

22. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the applicator includes a manifold supported on the anvil assembly, wherein the manifold defines the channels therein for directing a flow of wound treatment material.

23. The assembly according to claim 22, wherein the manifold is arranged to dispense wound treatment material onto an interface between the tissue portions.

24. The assembly according to claim 22, wherein each channel of the manifold is in fluid communication with the sleeve and the ampoule.

25. The assembly according to claim 22, wherein the manifold extends radially outward from the shaft and wherein each channel formed therein is radially oriented.

26. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the applicator includes a seal interposed between the sleeve and the ampoule.

27. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the applicator and the shaft are complementarily configured to form a releasable connection therebetween.

28. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the body portion carries a plurality of surgical staples in an annular configuration, the surgical staples being deployable against the anvil.

29. The assembly according to claim 28, further comprising an annular knife disposed radially inwardly of the staples.

30. The assembly according to claim 19, wherein the shaft and the sleeve form a plunger for compressing the amouple and dispensing the wound treatment material.

31. A method of joining a first tissue section and a second tissue section, comprising the steps of:

providing an apparatus having;

an anvil assembly including a stem;

a body portion in juxtaposition to the anvil assembly along a shaft and arranged so as to be approximated with respect to the anvil assembly;

an applicator disposed between the anvil assembly and the body portion and configured for retaining a wound treatment material therein and for dispensing the wound treatment material therefrom; and

dispensing the wound treatment material from the applicator so as to distribute wound treatment material onto an interface between the first tissue section and the second tissue section; and

approximating the anvil assembly and the body portion to one another so that the first tissue section and the second tissue section are in contact with one another.

32. The method according to claim 31, wherein the wound treatment material is at least one of an adhesive, a sealant, a hemostat, and a medicment.

33. The method according to claim 31, wherein the applicator includes a sleeve operatively connected to the anvil assembly;

an ampoule selectively positionable within the sleeve, wherein the wound treatment material is retained within and dispensed from the ampoule.

34. The method according to claim 33, further comprising compressing the ampoule to dispense the wound treatment material.

35. The method according to claim 34, further comprising the step of dispensing the wound treatment material from the ampoule and out through each channel.

36. The method according to claim 31, wherein the applicator includes a manifold supported on the anvil assembly, wherein the manifold defines at least one channel therein for directing a flow of wound treatment material.

37. The method according to claim 36, wherein the manifold extends radially outward from the stem of the anvil assembly and wherein each channel formed therein is radially oriented.

38. The method according to claim 31, further comprising the step of dispensing the wound treatment material in a radially outward direction.

39. The method according to claim 36, further comprising the step of dispensing the wound treatment material from at least one channel of the manifold.

40. The method according to claim 36, further comprising the step of dispensing the wound treatment material from the ampoule and out through at least one channel of the manifold.

41. The method according to claim 31, wherein the body portion includes a connection member, and wherein the applicator and the connection member are complementarily configured for bayonet-type coupling therebetween.

42. The method according to claim 41, further comprising connecting the applicator to the body portion.

43. The method according to claim 31, wherein the body portion carries a plurality of surgical staples in an annular configuration, the surgical staples being deployable against the anvil assembly.

44. The method according to claim 43, further comprising the step of stapling the first tissue section to the second tissue section.

45. The method according to claim 31, wherein the apparatus further comprises an annular knife disposed radially inwardly of the staples.

46. The method according to claim 45, further comprising the step of severing the first and second tissue sections at a location radially inward of the staples.
