Abstract

The invention includes a method system and apparatus for an asynchronous event notification. In the event that a system-wide application requires notification of an asynchronous event that occurs in a remote device within the communications system, the event is locally detected and the necessary information is forwarded to the application.

Claims

1. A method for asynchronous event notification within a communication system the method comprising:

determining a topology for a communication system, wherein the communication system includes a plurality of units, and wherein each of the plurality of units includes a processor and at least one network device;

initializing an application to be used by the plurality of network devices;

registering, in a processor of one unit of the plurality of units, functions and remote network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event that occurs from a remote network device within the communications system;

detecting an asynchronous event associated with a registered remote network device; and

sending information regarding the registered remote network device to the application.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein registering comprises storing in the processor, the functions and associated network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising:

sending, from a processor, a request for notification of events to each unit of the communications system that is included in the list;

creating, in each unit of the communications system, a list of processors within the system that have sent at least one request for notification of events to that unit.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein determining a topology further comprises:

determining in each unit of the communications system device connections that are contained within that unit; and

storing the device connections in the processor of that unit.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein a processor detects that an asynchronous event occurred within an associated unit and sends information regarding the asynchronous event to each processor that has sent the request for notification of an asynchronous event to that unit.

6. A system for asynchronous event notification within a communication system, the system comprising:

a topology module that determines a topology for a communication system, wherein the communication system includes a plurality of units, and wherein each of the plurality of units includes a processor and at least one network device;

a registry module that registers, in a processor of one unit of the plurality of units, functions and associated network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event that occurs within the communications system;

a detection module that detects an asynchronous event associated with a registered remote network device; and

a transmitting module that sends information regarding the registered remote network device to an application that is initialized to operate in the communications system.

7. The system of claim 6, wherein the registry module stores the functions and associated network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event.

8. The system of claim 7, further comprising:

a requestor module that sends, from a processor, a request for notification of events to each unit of the communications system that is included in the list;

a list creation module that creates, in each unit of the communications system, a list of processors within the system that have sent at least one request for notification of events to that unit.

9. The system of claim 6, wherein the topology module determines in each unit of the communications system device connections that are contained within that unit;

and

stores the device connections in the processor of that unit.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein a processor detects that an asynchronous event occurred within its unit and sends information regarding the asynchronous event to each processor that has sent the request for notification of an asynchronous event to that unit.

11. An apparatus for asynchronous event notification within a communication system the apparatus comprising:

a determining means for determining a topology for a communication system, wherein the communication system includes a plurality of units, and wherein each of the plurality of units includes a processor and at least one network device;

an initialization means for initializing an application to be used by the plurality of network devices;

a register means for registering, in a processor of one unit of the plurality of units, functions and remote network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event that occurs from a remote network device within the communications system;

a detector means for detecting an asynchronous event associated with a registered remote network device; and

a transmitting means for sending information regarding the registered remote network device to the application.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the register means stores in the processor, the functions and associated network devices that require notification of an asynchronous event.

13. The apparatus of claim 12, further comprising:

sending, from a processor, a request for notification of events to each unit of the communications system that is included in the list;

creating, in each unit of the communications system, a list of processors within the system that have sent at least one request for notification of events to that unit.

14. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein determining means determines in each unit of the communications system device connections that are contained within that unit;

and

stores the device connections in the processor of that unit.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein the detector means detects that an asynchronous event occurred within its unit and sends information regarding the asynchronous event to each processor that has sent the request for notification of an asynchronous event to that unit.
