Abstract

A pump for rapidly discharging irrigation fluid to a surgical site. The pump includes a cabinet with an opening. Inside the pump there is a static plate and a dynamic plate that extends towards/retracts from the static plate. The space between the plates is a bag well in which a bag containing irrigation fluid can be inserted/replaced through the cabinet opening. A lid covers the opening. A sensor monitors the open/closed state of the lid. A drive motor actuates the dynamic plate. A control unit regulates the actuation of the motor. Only when the lid sensor determines that the lid is closed does the control unit actuate the motor. The dynamic plate can be placed in various open positions relative to the static plate so bags containing different volumes of fluid can be used with the pump.

Claims

1. A surgical irrigation pump comprising:

a cabinet, said cabinet having an opening;

first and second plates disposed in said cabinet, with at least one of said first and second plate being configured to move towards and away from said other plate so as to define a varying volume bag well between said plates, said bag well being accessible through the opening in said cabinet;

a drive assembly disposed in said cabinet and attached to at least one of said first and second plate for moving said plate; and

a control unit connected to said drive assembly for selectively actuating said drive assembly to move said at least one of said first and second plate to a position allowing for easy insertion and removal of a bag into said varying volume bag well, and move said at least one of said first and second plate to compress a bag inserted into said varying volume bag well.

2. A surgical irrigation pump according to claim 1, wherein both said first and second plate are attached to said drive assembly and configured to move towards and away from one another so as to define said varying volume bag well between said plates.

3. A surgical irrigation pump according to claim 1, further comprising:

a lid moveably attached to said cabinet and positioned to selectively close the opening in said cabinet; and

a lid state sensor attached to said cabinet for monitoring the open/closed state of said lid;

wherein said control unit connects to said drive assembly for selectively actuating said drive assembly, and connects to said lid state sensor, said control unit being configured to allow actuation of said drive assembly only when said lid state sensor indicates said lid is closed.

4. The pump of claim 3, wherein:

said cabinet is formed to have a recessed surface that extends from the opening, said recessed surface dimensioned to accommodate an outflow tube that extends from said opening; and

said lid is formed with a nose that, when said lid is closed over the cabinet opening, extends over the recessed surface formed in said cabinet.

5. The pump of claim 3, further including:

a latch moveably mounted to said cabinet for holding said lid in the closed position; and

a latch actuator disposed in said cabinet and connected to said latch for selectively moving said latch away from said lid;

wherein said control unit is connected to said latch actuator for causing said latch actuator to move said latch away from said lid, and said control unit is further configured to only actuate said latch actuator when said drive assembly is not being actuated.

6. The pump of claim 3, further including:

a biasing member extending between said cabinet and said lid for normally urging said lid into an open position away from the opening in said cabinet;

a latch moveably mounted to said cabinet for holding said lid in the closed position; and

a latch actuator disposed in said cabinet and connected to said latch for selectively moving said latch away from said lid;

wherein said control unit is connected to said latch actuator for causing said latch actuator to move said latch away from said lid, and said control unit is further configured to only actuate said latch actuator when said drive assembly is not being actuated.

7. The pump of claim 1, wherein one of said first and second plate is statically connected to said cabinet.

8. The pump of claim 1, wherein an end of one of said first and second plate is pivotally connected to said other plate.

9. The pump of claim 1, wherein:

said drive assembly includes a motor and a gear assembly connected to said motor; and

said motor and said gear assembly are attached to one of said first and second plate so as to move with said plate.

10. The pump of claim 1, wherein:

a pressure sensor is mounted to one of said first or second plate and is positioned to extend into the bag well to monitor the pressure of a fluid bag in the bag well and generate a variable BAG_PRESSURE signal as a function of the sensed bag pressure;

said drive assembly is configured to move one of said first and second plate toward said other plate at a variable speed;

said control unit receives from said pressure sensor the BAG_PRESSURE signal and is further configured to, in response to said BAG PRESSURE signal, regulate the speed at which said drive assembly causes said one of said first and second plate to move towards said other plate.

11. The surgical pump of claim 1, wherein:

said drive assembly includes an electrically actuated motor;

a rechargeable battery pack is located in said cabinet for providing power to said drive assembly motor; and

a battery charger is disposed in said cabinet for receiving a line current and charging said battery pack with a charging current.

12. The surgical pump of claim 1, wherein:

said at least one of said first and second plate attached to said drive assembly has a first open position wherein said first and second plates are spaced relative to one another so that a first fluid bag containing a first quantity of fluid can be placed in said bag well;

said at least one of said first and second plate attached to said drive assembly has a second open position wherein said first and second plates are spaced relative to one another so that a second fluid bag containing a second quantity of fluid can be placed in said bag well, the second quantity of fluid being greater than the first quantity of fluid; and

a bag presence sensor is disposed in said cabinet adjacent the bag well for detecting the presence of a fluid bag in the bag well, the bag presence sensor generating a BAG_YES signal upon detecting a bag in the bag well, said bag presence sensor being positioned in said cabinet so that, when said at least one of said first and second plate attached to said drive assembly is in the second open position and a first fluid bag is in the bag well, said bag presence sensor does not detect the presence of the fluid bag.

13. The surgical pump of claim 12, wherein said control unit is connected to said bag presence sensor for receiving the BAG_YES signal and is further configured to regulate said drive assembly based on whether the BAG_YES signal indicates a fluid bag is in the bag well.

14. A surgical irrigation pump, said pump including:

a cabinet, the cabinet having an opening;

a lid attached to said cabinet for selectively covering the opening;

a first plate disposed in said cabinet;

a second plate disposed in said cabinet and pivotally attached to said first plate so as to define a bag well in said cabinet between said plates, said bag well accessible through the opening in said cabinet; and

a drive assembly attached to at least one of said first and second plate for selectively moving said at least one attached plate towards and away from said other plate.

15. The surgical irrigation pump of claim 14, wherein said drive assembly includes a motor disposed in said cabinet.

16. The surgical irrigation pump of claim 14 wherein said drive assembly includes:

a motor having a drive shaft, said motor being attached to one of said first and second plate to move with said plate;

a gear assembly attached to at least one of said first and second plate to move with said plate, said gear assembly including at least one pinion gear and configured to receive rotational power from said motor drive shaft so that the power from said motor drive shaft rotates said at least one gear; and

a rack statically mounted on either said first or second plate in said cabinet, wherein said rack is positioned so that said at least one pinion gear engages said rack so that rotation of said pinion gear causes movement of at least one of said first and second plates toward said other plate.

17. The surgical pump of claim 14, wherein one of said first and second plate is statically connected to said cabinet.

18. The pump of claim 14, wherein:

a pressure sensor is mounted to one of said first or second plate and is positioned to extend into the bag well to monitor the pressure of a fluid bag in the bag well and generate a variable BAG_PRESSURE signal as a function of the sensed bag pressure;

said drive assembly is configured to move said at least one of said first and second plate toward said other plate at a variable speed; and

a control unit disposed in said cabinet for regulating the actuation of said drive assembly, said control unit receiving from said pressure sensor the BAG_PRESSURE signal, and in response to said BAG_PRESSURE signal, regulates the speed at which said drive assembly causes said at least one of said first and second plate to move towards said other plate.

19. A surgical pump, said pump including:

a cabinet, said cabinet having an opening;

a first and second plate disposed in said cabinet, with at least one of said plates being displaceable towards and away from the other of said plates, said first and second plates being positioned so as to define a bag well in said cabinet between said plates, said bag well being accessible through the cabinet opening and wherein at least one of said plates is positionable relative to said other plate so as to have;

a first open position wherein a first fluid bag containing a first volume of fluid can be placed in the bag well;

a second open position wherein a second fluid bag containing a second volume of fluid that is larger than the first volume of fluid can be placed in the bag well;

a bag presence sensor disposed in said cabinet for monitoring the presence/absence of a fluid bag in the bag well and that generates a BAG_YES signal representative of the presence/absence of a fluid bag in the bag well, said bag presence sensor being positioned so that when said at least one displaceable plate is in the second open position and a first fluid bag is in said bag well, said bag presence sensor is unable to detect the presence of said bag;

a drive assembly disposed in said cabinet and attached to said at least one displaceable plate for extending said plate towards and retracting said plate away from said other plate; and

a control unit connected to said bag presence sensor for receiving the BAG_YES signal, and connected to said drive assembly for controlling actuation of said drive assembly, said control unit being configured to regulate actuation of said drive assembly based on whether the BAG_YES signal indicates a fluid bag is in the bag well.

20. The surgical pump of claim 19, wherein said first and second plates are pivotally connected together.

21. The surgical pump of claim 19, wherein one of said first and second plates is statically mounted to said cabinet.

22. The surgical pump of claim 19, wherein said bag presence sensor is mounted to one of said first plate or said second plate.

23. The surgical pump of claim 22, wherein said drive assembly includes a motor that is mounted to one of said first and second plates that is displaceable so as to move with said plate.

24. A tube set for use with a fluid bag, said tube set including:

a spike, said spike comprising;

a single tube that has a first section that is beveled to a point and a second section that is axially angled relative to the first section; and

an outflow tube connected to said second section.

25. The tube set according to claim 24, further comprising a thumb tab formed over said second section to be located above the first section.
