Abstract

The present invention provides a system and method for gender specific medical treatment. The medical treatment system can include gender specific medical devices which are designed to account for the anatomical and physiological differences in the male and female genders. The medical treatment system can also include a medical device identification system which differentiates use for male and female patients. The medical device identification system includes a container adapted to receive a medical device and a gender specifier. The gender specifier is used to identify the gender the medical device in designed for. The gender specifier can be in text form, symbolic form, or color coded.

Claims

1. A method for providing gender-specific prosthetic implants comprising:

providing a first prosthetic implant designed for use in a first surgical procedure and having a first shape, size and construction;

providing a second prosthetic implant designed for use in the first surgical procedure and having a second shape, size and construction different from the first prosthetic implant; and

selecting one of the first or second prosthetic implants based on the gender of a patient.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second prosthetic implants have a first feature that is measurably different by about 5 percent or more.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first feature is a linear dimension of the first and second prosthetic implants.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein the first prosthetic implant has a first width, the second prosthetic implant has a second width that differs from the first width by about 5 percent or more.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising the step of associating a first gender indicator with the first prosthetic implant.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the first gender indicator is disposed on an outer surface of the first prosthetic implant.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first surgical procedure is an orthopedic procedure.

8. A method for providing gender-specific prosthetic implants for a surgical procedure comprising:

providing a first plurality of prosthetic implants for the surgical procedure and having a first plurality of shapes, sizes and constructions designed and configured for female anatomy; and

providing a second plurality of prosthetic implants for the surgical procedure and having a second shape, size and construction designed and configured for male anatomy.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

associating a female gender indicator with the first plurality of prosthetic implants; and

associating a male gender indicator with the second plurality of prosthetic implants.

10. The method of claim 8, further comprising selecting one of the first or second plurality of prosthetic implants according to gender of a patient before performing the surgical procedure.

11. The method of claim 8, wherein:

the first and second pluralities of prosthetic implants have a variable first design parameter;

the first design parameter is within a first range for the first plurality of prosthetic implants; and

the first design parameter is within a second range for the second plurality of prosthetic implants that is different from the first range.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the first design parameter corresponds to widths, lengths, or heights of the prosthetic implants.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the first design parameter corresponds to angles formed by surfaces of the prosthetic implants.

14. The method of claim 8, further comprising:

associating a first tool with the first plurality of prosthetic implants and combining the first tool and first plurality of prosthetic implants into a first surgical kit;

associating a second tool with the second plurality of prosthetic implants and combining the second tool with the second plurality of prosthetic implants into a second surgical kit; and

selecting one of the first or second surgical kits according to gender of a patient before performing the surgical procedure.

15. A prosthetic device comprising:

a first condyle portion including a first bearing surface having a first radius and a first width; and

a second condyle portion including a second bearing surface having a second radius and a second width, wherein the first radius is greater than the second radius.

16. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, further comprising a material thickness, wherein the material thickness is gender dependent.

17. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, wherein the dimensions of the first and second radii and the first and second widths are gender dependent.

18. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, further comprising a trochlear groove interposed between the first and second condyle portions, and having a groove width.

19. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, further comprising an upper section, wherein the upper section has scalloped edges.

20. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, wherein the first width is greater than the second width.

21. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 15, wherein the first width is less than the second width.

22. A prosthetic implant as set forth in claim 15, further comprising:

a first component including the first condyle; and

a second component including the second condyle, wherein the first and second components are separate and affixed together to form the prosthetic implant.

23. A prosthetic device comprising:

a bone spike; and

a flat platform pivotably mounted to the bone spike.

24. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 23, wherein the flat platform is slidingly mounted to the bone spike.

25. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 23, wherein the flat platform is substantially oval in shape.

26. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 23, wherein the flat platform has a substantially elongated oval shape.

27. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 23, wherein the diameter of the bone spike is gender dependent.

28. A prosthetic device as set forth in claim 23, wherein the size of the flat platform is gender dependent.

29. A surgical navigational system for implantation of prosthetic devices comprising:

a central processing unit including a processor and a memory;

a display device connected to the central processing unit;

an input device connected to the central processing unit and including a stylus, the stylus being used to input a plurality of data points of a joint or a patient;

an anatomical database stored in the memory, the anatomical database including a library of joint mappings, wherein the library of joint mappings has a plurality of different size joints and data relating to anatomical gender differences in the different size joints; and

a computer program stored on the memory, wherein the computer program utilizes the plurality of data points of the joint, a gender of the patient, and the anatomical database to produce a mapping of the joint, wherein the mapping of the joint is displayed on the display unit.

30. A surgical navigational system as set forth in claim 29, further comprising a prosthetic implant database, the prosthetic implant database including information relating the size and gender for use of a plurality of prosthetic implants.

31. A surgical navigational system as set forth in claim 30, wherein the computer program selects a prosthetic implant from the prosthetic implant database, wherein the prosthetic implant is based on the gender of the patient.

32. A surgical navigational system as set forth in claim 31, wherein the computer program selects a cutting pattern of the joint for implantation of the prosthetic implant, wherein the cutting pattern can be displayed on the display device.

33. A medical device identification system comprising:

a container adapted to receive a medical device; and

a gender specifier.

34. The medical device identification system of claim 33, further comprising a label affixed to the container, wherein the gender specifier is incorporated into at least a portion of the label.

35. The medical device identification system of claim 34, wherein the gender specifier is in text form.

36. The medical device identification system of claim 34, wherein the gender specifier is in symbolic form.

37. The medical device identification system of claim 34, wherein the gender specifier is in color code form.

38. The medical device identification system of claim 34, wherein the medical device is a prosthetic implant.

39. The medical device identification system of claim 38, wherein the prosthetic implant is designed and configured for use in a male gender.

40. The medical device identification system of claim 38, wherein the prosthetic implant is designed and configured for use in a female gender.

41. The medical device identification system of claim 38, wherein the prosthetic implant is an ankle, knee, hip, spine, neck, wrist, elbow, or shoulder prosthetic implant.

42. The medical device identification system of claim 38, wherein the prosthetic implant is a screw, plate or rod.

43. The medical device identification system of claim 34, wherein the medical device is a stent, scaffold, biological implant, or tissue graft.

44. The medical device identification system of claim 33, wherein the gender specifier is incorporated into the container.

45. The medical device identification system of claim 44, wherein the gender specifier is in text form.

46. The medical device identification system of claim 44, wherein the gender specifier is in symbolic form.

47. The medical device identification system of claim 44, wherein the gender specifier is in color code form.
