Abstract

A television and a method are provided. The television includes a display, a first network interface to a packet-based network, a first modular card receptacle coupled to the first network interface, and an audio receiver modular card coupled to the first modular card receptacle, the audio receiver modular card to process audio data, wherein the television is operable to display video content on the display promptly upon receipt of a user request.

Claims

1. A television comprising:

a display;

a first network interface to a packet-based network;

a first modular card receptacle coupled to the first network interface; and

an audio receiver modular card coupled to the first modular card receptacle, the audio receiver modular card to process audio data;

wherein the television is operable to display video content on the display promptly upon receipt of a user request.

2. The television of claim 1, wherein the user request includes at least one of a request to power up the television or a request to change channels.

3. The television of claim 1, wherein the audio receiver modular card comprises at least a first audio input to receive audio data from an external audio device.

4. The television of claim 3, wherein the external audio device comprises at least one of a portable music player, a digital versatile disk (DVD) player, a satellite audio receiver or a compact disk (CD) player.

5. The television of claim 1, wherein the audio receiver modular card comprises at least one audio output.

6. The television of claim 1, wherein the at least one audio output comprises at least one of a rear left speaker output, a rear right speaker output, a front left speaker output, a front right speaker output, or a center output.

7. The television of claim 1, wherein the at least one audio output is accessible at an external surface of a housing of the television.

8. The television of claim 1, wherein the audio receiver modular card comprises a radio frequency (RF) tuner.

9. The television of claim 1, wherein the audio receiver modular card processes audio data received via the first network interface.

10. The television of claim 9, wherein the audio data is received as part of a multimedia data stream.

11. The television of claim 1, further comprising:

a second modular card receptacle coupled to the first modular card receptacle; and

a wireless network interface modular card coupled to the second modular card receptacle, wherein the wireless network interface modular card wirelessly transmits audio data provided by the audio receiver modular card.

12. The television of claim 11, wherein the wireless network interface modular card wirelessly receives audio data for processing by the audio receiver modular card.

13. The television of claim 1, further comprising a remote control interface to receive one or more remote control commands from a remote control device, wherein the audio receiver modular card performs at least one audio processing operation in response to the one or more remote control commands.

14. The television of claim 1, further comprising:

a decoder to process multimedia data received via the first network interface.

15. The television of claim 14, further comprising:

a second modular card receptacle coupled to the first network interface; and

wherein the decoder comprises a decoder modular card coupled to the second modular card receptacle.

16. The television of claim 1, wherein the packet-based network is an Internet Protocol (IP)-based network.

17. The television of claim 1, wherein the video content is displayed within five seconds of receiving the user request.

18. The television of claim 1, wherein the video content is displayed within two seconds of receiving the user request.

19. A method comprising:

receiving first audio data at an audio receiver modular card of a television via a first network interface of the television;

processing the first audio data at the audio receiver modular card to generate second audio data; and

providing the second audio data for output to one or more speakers;

wherein the television displays video content of a multimedia data stream promptly upon receipt of a user request.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein receiving the first audio data comprises receiving the first audio data via the first network interface of the television, wherein the first network interface is coupled to a packet-based network.

21. The method of claim 19, wherein receiving the first audio data comprises receiving the first audio data via an audio input of the audio receiver modular card.

22. The method of claim 19, wherein receiving the first audio data comprises receiving the first audio data via a radio frequency (RF) tuner of the audio receiver modular card.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein providing the second audio data for output comprises providing the second audio data for output via one or more wired speaker outputs.

24. The method of claim 19, wherein providing the second audio data for output comprises providing the second audio data to a wireless network interface of the television for wireless transmission to one or more speakers.

25. A method comprising:

providing an audio data stream to a television via a packet-based network, the television comprising an exterior interface panel including a plurality of interface connections including a network interface to the packet-based network to receive the multimedia data, the television further including an audio receiver modular card to process an audio data stream, wherein the television is operable to display video content promptly upon receipt of a user request.

26. The method of claim 25, wherein the user request includes at least one of a request to power up the television, a request to change channels, or a request to modify on audio output.

27. The method of claim 25, further comprising providing a predetermined decoding key to the television via the packet-based network.

28. The method of claim 25, wherein the audio data stream is provided via one of a digital subscriber line, a digital cable transmission, an optical fiber line, or a wireless transmission.

29. The method of claim 25, further comprising billing for a service that includes providing the audio data stream.
