Abstract

Embodiments consistent with invention detect and display errors in a business application by analyzing a hierarchical model of the business application that enforces the hirarchical structure of configuration objects that are used by the business application. Detected errors are marked for the configuration object containing the error and propagated up through the hierarchical structure of the business application model. A display of the hierarchical structure of the business application model with error indicators is useful for efficiently finding and correcting the errors in the actual business application.

Claims

1. A method of exposing a business application error, comprising:

receiving a hierarchical model representing the business application comprising a plurality of configuration objects;

detecting an error in a configuration object among the plurality of configuration objects;

flagging the configuration object as having the error;

flagging a second configuration object that is related to the configuration object at a higher hierarchical level than the configuration object according to the model; and

presenting a first indication of the error in association with the configuration object and a second indication of the error in association with the second configuration object.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

analyzing the configuration of a table-based system; and

generating the hierarchical model representing the configuration of the business application based on the results of the analysis.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting an error comprises:

using an integrated development environment to detect the error in the configuration object.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein presenting comprises:

displaying representations of flagged configuration objects so as to indicate the error.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein displaying comprises:

displaying a representation of the configuration object;

displaying an indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the configuration object;

displaying a representation of the second configuration object so as to indicate a higher position in a hierarchy than the configuration object; and

displaying a second indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the second configuration object.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein detecting comprises:

evaluating the configuration object for errors based on changes to a third object upon which the configuration object depends.

7. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

changing the business application to correct a corresponding error in a software structure corresponding to the configuration object of the hierarchical model.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

providing the ability to drill down from the second configuration object to the configuration object and see the error.

9. A method of hierarchically exposing a business application error comprising:

creating a hierarchical model of the business application in a language recognized by an integrated development environment, wherein the model comprises a plurality of configuration objects;

loading the model into the workspace of the integrated development environment;

detecting an error in a first object among the plurality of configuration objects using the integrated development environment;

flagging the first configuration object and a second configuration object that is related to the first configuration object at a higher hierarchical level according to the model; and

displaying a representation of the model using the integrated development environment, wherein the displayed representation indicates the error in association with the first configuration object and the second configuration object.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein displaying comprises:

displaying a representation of the first configuration object;

displaying an indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the first configuration object;

displaying a representation of the second configuration object so as to indicate a higher position in a hierarchy than the first configuration object; and

displaying a second indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the second configuration object.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein detecting comprises:

evaluating the first object for errors after changes to a third configuration object upon which the first object depends.

12. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

changing the business application to correct a corresponding error in a software structure corresponding to the first configuration object of the hierarchical model.

13. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving a change to a third configuration object of the plurality of configuration objects through the integrated configuration environment; and

wherein detecting comprises;

determining the error in the first configuration object wherein the error is caused by the change to the third configuration object.

14. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

providing the ability to drill down from the second configuration object to the first configuration object and see the error.

15. A system for exposing a business application error, comprising:

means for receiving a hierarchical model representing the business application comprising a plurality of configuration objects;

means for detecting an error in an configuration object among the plurality of configuration objects;

means for flagging the configuration object as having the error;

means for flagging a second configuration object that is related to the configuration object at a higher hierarchical level than the configuration object according to the model; and

means for presenting a first indication of the error in association with the configuration object and a second indication of the error in association with the second configuration object.

16. The system of claim 15, wherein the means for detecting an error comprises:

means for using an integrated development environment to detect the error in the configuration object.

17. The system of claim 15, wherein the means for presenting comprises:

displaying representations of flagged configuration objects so as to indicate the error.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the means for displaying comprises:

means for displaying a representation of the configuration object;

means for displaying an indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the configuration object;

means for displaying a representation of the second configuration object so as to indicate a higher position in a hierarchy than the configuration object; and

means for displaying a second indicator representing the error in association with the representation of the second configuration object.

19. The system of claim 15, wherein the means for detecting comprises:

means for evaluating the configuration object for errors based on changes to a third configuration object upon which the configuration object depends.

20. The system of claim 15, further comprising:

means for changing the business application to correct a corresponding error in a software structure corresponding to the configuration object of the hierarchical model.
