Synchronization aspects of interactive multimedia presentation management
First Claim
1. A method for playing an interactive multimedia presentation having a presentation play duration, a play speed, a video content component and an interactive content component, the interactive content component comprising an application having instructions for rendering a media object concurrently with the video content component, the application having an application play duration and having an application presentation interval within the presentation play duration, the method comprising:
- accessing a first timing signal produced at a rate based on the play speed;
accessing a second timing signal produced at a continuous predetermined rate;
based on the first timing signal, forming a title time reference by measuring an elapsed time of the presentation play duration; and
when the elapsed time of the presentation play duration is within the application presentation interval, forming an application time reference by measuring an elapsed time of the application play duration based on the second timing signal.

Abstract
An interactive multimedia presentation has a presentation play duration (“PPD”), a video content component (“VCP.” which may include video, audio, data, or any combination thereof), and an interactive content component (“ICP”). Time references are formed to synchronize the ICP and the VCP. A title time reference measures the elapsed time (“ET”) of the PPD with reference to a first timing signal produced at a rate based on the play speed of the presentation. When the title time falls within an application presentation interval, an application time reference measures an ET of the application'"'"'s play duration with reference to a second timing signal produced at a continuous predetermined rate. When the ET of the PPD is within the application presentation interval and also within a particular page presentation interval, a page time measures an ET of the particular page play duration based on the second timing signal.

16. A system for playing an interactive multimedia presentation having a presentation play duration, a play speed, a video content component and an interactive content component, the interactive content component comprising an application having instructions for rendering a plurality of media objects concurrently with the video content component, the application having an application play duration and having an application presentation interval within the presentation play duration, the system comprising:
-
an interactive content manager configured to arrange the interactive content component for rendering;
a video content manager configured to arrange the video content component for rendering;
a first time reference calculator configured to receive a first timing signal produced at a rate based on the play speed and to form a title time reference by measuring an elapsed time of the presentation duration based on the first timing signal, and a second time reference calculator configured to receive a second timing signal produced at a continuous predetermined rate and, when the elapsed time of the presentation duration is within the application presentation interval, to form an application time reference by measuring an elapsed time of the application play duration based on the second timing signal; and
a presentation manager configured for communication with the interactive content manager and the video content manager, the presentation manager responsive to receive the title time reference from the first time reference calculator and the application time reference from the second time reference calculator, and the presentation manager operable to, during the application presentation interval, direct the rendering of the plurality of media objects by the interactive content manager based on the title time reference and the application time reference. - View Dependent Claims (17, 18, 19, 20)
