Abstract

An attachment mechanism for a surgically implantable medical device includes one or more fasteners which may be simultaneously moved from an undeployed position to a deployed position by operation of an integral actuator. The attachment mechanism may be configured to be deactuated, and the fasteners simultaneously moved from a deployed position to an undeployed position, allowing removal or repositioning of the medical device. An applier includes a locator for detachably holding the implantable medical device, locating it at the desired position, and actuating the attachment mechanism. The applier is configured to undeploy the attachment mechanism the implantable medical device can be detached from the body tissue.

Claims

1. A surgically implantable injection port comprising a housing comprising a bottom having a sidewall extending proximally therefrom to define a reservoir, said bottom comprising a metallic member, wherein said metallic member is free from contact with said sidewall at areas proximal to a distalmost end of said sidewall.

2. The injection port of claim 2, wherein said metallic member is retained in place by a retaining lip overlying at least a portion of said metallic member.

The injection port of claim 2, wherein said housing defines a recess adjacent said bottom, said recess having a periphery, said retaining lip initially extending upwardly from adjacent at least a portion of said periphery, said retaining lip being deformed to overlie at least a portion of said metallic member.

4. The injection port of claim 2, wherein said retaining lip has an annular shape.

5. The injection port of claim 4, wherein said retaining lip is continuous about said recess.

6. A surgically implantable injection port comprising:

(a) a housing defining a reservoir;

(b) said reservoir comprising a top defined by a fluid tight membrane;

(c) an annular ring disposed adjacent said membrane, said annular ring exerting a compressive force on said membrane, said force maintaining said membrane fluid tight after multiple punctures by a needle.

7. The port of claim 6, wherein said membrane is silicone.

8. The port of claim 6, wherein said annular ring compresses an annular portion of said membrane approximately 20%.

9. The port of claim 8, wherein said membrane has an outer diameter and a thickness, the ratio of said outer diameter to said thickness being approximately 3.6.
