Abstract

A bone preparation device for preparing a bone surface for receiving an implant.

Claims

1. A bone removal device for preparing a bone surface for receiving an implant, comprising:

a) a body having an opening extending along a longitudinal axis;

b) a movable shaft adapted to move within the opening of the body comprising;

i) a proximal end portion,

ii) a distal end portion,

iii) an outer surface, and

iv) an abrading element disposed upon approximately 50 percent or less of the outer surface of the distal end portion of the shaft.

2. The bone removal device of claim 1 wherein the abrading element is selected from the group consisting of cutting teeth, knurling, and flutes.

3. The bone removal device of claim 2, wherein the abrading element comprises a cutting flute.

4. The bone removal device of claim 1, wherein the abrading element is angled to match the contour of the bone surface.

5. The bone removal device of claim 1, wherein the abrading element is oriented to cut in a selected direction.

6. The bone removal device of claim 1 wherein the body further comprises a gripping element adapted to grip bone.

7. The bone removal device of claim 1, further comprising a handle extending from the proximal end of the body.

8. The bone removal device of claim 1, wherein a portion of the body acts as a stop to prevent the device from advancing too far distally.

9. The bone removal device of claim 1, wherein the shaft has a generally cylindrical shape.

10. The bone removal device of claim 9 wherein the shaft is moveable in a rotational direction with respect to the body.

11. The bone removal device of claim 9, wherein the abrading element cuts in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

12. The bone removal device of claim 1, wherein the shaft has a first planar surface.

13. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein the proximal end of the body is connected to a fixed handle and the proximal end of the moveable shaft is connected to a second handle pivotally connected to the fixed handle.

14. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein the shaft is moveable in a linear direction along the longitudinal axis of the body.

15. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein the abrading element is located on the planar surface of the shaft.

16. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein the abrading element is selected from the group consisting of teeth, knurling, flutes, and ridges.

17. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein a portion of the body further comprises a gripping element for engaging bone.

18. The bone removal device of claim 17, wherein the gripping element is a polymer coating having a tacky characteristic.

19. The bone removal device of claim 17, wherein the gripping element is selected from the group consisting of surface texturing, cushioning, and coating such as silicone, or polyeurathane.

20. The bone removal device of claim 12, wherein the body acts as a stop to prevent the device from being inserted too far distally.

21. The bone removal device of claim 20, wherein the stop is adjustable.

22. A bone preparation device comprising:

a) a shaft extending from a proximal end portion to a distal end portion along a longitudinal axis;

b) a generally cylindrical shaped tip having an outer surface and connected to the distal end portion of the shaft; and

c) an abrading element disposed upon a first portion of the outer surface of the tip

23. The bone preparation device of claim 22, further comprising a gripping element on a second portion of the outer surface of the tip.

24. The bone preparation device of claim 22, further comprising a stop formed at the distal end of the shaft.

25. The bone preparation device of claim 22, wherein the abrading element cuts in a plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

26. The bone preparation device of claim 22, wherein the abrading element is selected from the group consisting of teeth, ridges, knurling, and flutes.

27. The bone preparation device of claim 22, wherein the abrading element extends over approximately 360 degrees of the tip.

28. The bone preparation device of claim 22, wherein the abrading element extends over approximately 180 degrees of the tip.

29. The bone preparation device of claim 22, wherein the abrading element extends over approximately 90 degrees of the tip.

30. The bone preparation device of claim 23, wherein the gripping element extends over approximately 180 degrees or less of the tip.

31. The bone preparation device of claim 25, further comprising a second abrading element extending from the proximal to the distal end of the tip.

32. The bone preparation device of claim 31, wherein the second abrading element cuts in a direction parallel to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

33. The bone preparation device of claim 31, wherein the second abrading element is moveable with respect to the tip.

34. A method of preparing a bone surface for receiving an implant, comprising the steps of:

inserting between two bone surfaces an instrument having a shaft and a generally cylindrical tip, the tip having an outer surface wherein a first portion of the outer surface comprises an abrading element;

applying a compressive force on the shaft of the instrument; and

moving the shaft such that the abrading element cuts the bone surface in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the shaft.

35. The method of claim 34 wherein the step of inserting the instrument further includes applying a distraction force between the two bone surfaces.

36. The method of claim 35 further comprising the step of removing the distraction force.

37. A method of preparing a bone surface for receiving an implant, comprising the steps of:

a) inserting between two bone surfaces an instrument having a tip having an outer surface, wherein a first portion of the outer surface comprises an abrading element and a second portion of the outer surface comprises a gripping element;

b) applying a compressive force on the shaft of the instrument so that the gripping element grips a first bone surface; and

c) moving the shaft such that the abrading element cuts a second bone surface.
