Abstract

Apparatus for monitoring structural health conditions of structures. The apparatus includes a piezoelectric device that has a bottom cover plate, piezoelectric rings concentrically disposed with respect to an axis and positioned on the bottom cover plate, and concentric filler rings made from an electrically insulating material. Each of the piezoelectric rings is interposed between two adjacent filler rings. The piezoelectric device also includes electrical connection means for communicating electrical signals to the piezoelectric rings and a top cover plate that is positioned over the piezoelectric rings and filler rings. The electrical connection means are operative to transmit electrical signals that cause one or more of the piezoelectric rings to generate waves or transmit electrical signals developed by one or more of the piezoelectric rings in response to the waves.

Claims

1. A device for monitoring structural health conditions of an object, comprising:

a piezoelectric device including;

a bottom cover plate;

a plurality of piezoelectric rings concentrically disposed with respect to an axis and positioned on said bottom cover plate;

a plurality of concentric filler rings made from an electrically insulating material, each of said piezoelectric rings being interposed between two adjacent ones of said filler rings;

electrical connection means for communicating electrical signals to said piezoelectric rings; and

a top cover plate positioned over said piezoelectric rings and filler rings, said bottom and top cover plates being adapted to hold said piezoelectric rings and filler rings in place,

wherein said electrical connection means are operative to transmit electrical signals that cause one or more of said piezoelectric rings to generate waves or transmit electrical signals developed by one or more of said piezoelectric rings in response to the waves

2. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein each of said piezoelectric rings has flat top and bottom surfaces that are perpendicular to said axis and covered with conductive flakes.

A device as recited in claim 2, wherein each of said top and bottom cover plates includes a plurality of conductive rings concentrically disposed with respect to said axis, each said conductive ring having a flat surface in surface contact with one of said conductive flakes and being electrically insulated from the other conductive rings.

4. A device as recited in claim 3, wherein one or more of said conductive rings are formed from a conductive epoxy, glass fiber or carbon fiber impregnated with a conductive epoxy.

5. A device as recited in claim 3, wherein one or more of said conductive rings include metal rings attached to said top and bottom cover plates by use of a conductive epoxy.

6. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein said filler rings are made from glass-epoxy, carbon-epoxy, epoxy-resin, or polyimide.

7. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein said filler rings are attached to said top and bottom cover plates by use of a thermo-setting adhesive.

8. A device as recited in claim 3, wherein each of said top and bottom cover plates further includes one or more covering layers and base layers stacked alternatively.

9. A device as recited in claim 8, wherein one or more of said conductive rings are generated by etching metal coating formed on one or more of said base layers.

10. A device as recited in claim 8, wherein said base layers and covering layers are made from polyimide or polyester.

11. A device as recited in claim 8, wherein said covering layers and base layers are attached to each other by use of a thermo-setting adhesive.

12. A device as recited in claim 8, wherein said electrical connection means include one or more electrical nodes that are respectively positioned in said covering layers, each said electrical nodes being connected to one or more of said conductive rings and connected to an electrical wire.

13. The device of claim 1, wherein the waves are Lamb waves.

14. A device as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

a dielectric substrate;

at least one buffer layer attached to said substrate, said piezoelectric device being positioned on and attached to said buffer layer;

a molding layer deposited over said piezoelectric device;

an outer cover layer deposited over said molding layer; and

a plurality of electrical wires coupled to said electrical connection means.

15. A device as recited in claim 14, wherein said one buffer layer is comprised of polymer or metal.

16. A device as recited in claim 14, wherein said molding layer is comprised of epoxy, polyimide, or silicon-polyimide and wherein said cover layer is comprised of metal.

17. A device as recited in claim 14, further comprising a protective layer deposited over said outer cover layer and comprised of epoxy or polyimide.

18. A device as recited in claim 14, further comprising:

a hoop layer attached to said substrate and comprised of a dielectric insulating material, said hoop layer surrounding said buffer layer.

19. A device as recited in claim 14, further comprising;

an optical fiber coil attached to said substrate and located around the periphery of said piezoelectric device, said optical fiber coil including;

a rolled optical fiber cable; and

a coating layer applied to said rolled optical fiber cable, wherein a preset tensional force is applied during a rolling process of said optical fiber cable and said coating layer sustains tensional stress of said rolled optical fiber cable.

20. The device of claim 19, wherein said coating layer is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of metal, polymer, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, and tantalum oxide.

21. A device as recited in claim 1, further comprising:

a bottom substrate;

a bottom buffer layer comprising at least one sublayer, said piezoelectric device being positioned on said bottom buffer layer;

a top buffer layer positioned on said piezoelectric device, said top buffer layer comprising at least one sublayer;

a plurality of electrical wires coupled to said electrical connection means;

a hoop layer surrounding said piezoelectric device; and

a top substrate positioned on said top buffer layer, said hoop layer being attached to said top substrate and bottom substrate.

22. A device as recited in claim 21, further comprising:

an optical fiber coil sensor located around the periphery of said piezoelectric device, attached to said bottom substrate, and positioned between said piezoelectric device and said hoop layer, said optical fiber coil sensor including;

a rolled optical fiber cable; and

a coating layer applied to said rolled optical fiber cable,

wherein a preset tensional force is applied during a rolling process of said optical fiber cable and said coating layer sustains tensional stress of said rolled optical fiber cable.

23. The device of claim 22, wherein said coating layer is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of metal, polymer, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, and tantalum oxide.

24. A device as recited in claim 1, wherein said piezoelectric device includes a hole formed along said axis, further comprising:

a ring-shaped support element having a channel along a circumferential direction and a notch along a radial direction thereof;

said piezoelectric device attached to said support element and positioned within said channel along said circumferential direction;

a plurality of electrical wires coupled to said electrical connection means, wherein said electrical wires pass through the notch; and

a ring-shaped lid for covering said channel.

25. A device as recited in claim 24, further comprising:

an optical fiber coil sensor attached to said support element and located around the periphery of said piezoelectric device within said channel, said optical fiber coil sensor comprising;

a rolled optical fiber cable; and

a coating layer applied to said rolled optical fiber cable,

wherein a preset tensional force is applied during a rolling process of said optical fiber cable and said coating layer sustains tensional stress of said rolled optical fiber cable, and wherein two ends of said optical fiber cable pass through said notch.

26. The device of claim 25, wherein said coating layer is comprised of a material selected from the group consisting of metal, polymer, zinc oxide, silicon oxide, and tantalum oxide.

27. A device for monitoring structural health conditions of an object, comprising:

a piezoelectric device including;

a plurality of filler rings concentrically disposed with respect to an axis and formed from an electrically insulating material;

a plurality of piezoelectric rings, each said ring being concentrically interposed between two adjacent ones of said filler rings and having flat top and bottom surfaces that are perpendicular to said axis and covered with top and bottom conductive flakes, respectively;

a plurality of top conductive rings concentrically disposed with respect to said axis, each said top conductive ring having a flat bottom surface in contact with one of said top conductive flakes and being electrically insulated from the other top conductive rings;

one or more top covering layers and top base layers alternatively stacked on said filler rings and configured to cover at least one of said plurality of top conductive rings;

top electrical connection means for communicating electric signals to said top conductive rings;

a plurality of bottom conductive rings concentrically disposed with respect to said axis, each said bottom conductive ring having a flat top surface in contact with one of said bottom conductive flakes and being electrically insulated from the other bottom conductive rings;

one or more bottom covering layers and bottom base layers alternatively stacked beneath said filler rings and configured to cover at least one of said plurality of bottom conductive rings; and

bottom electrical connection means for communicating electric signals to said bottom conductive rings;

wherein said top and bottom electrical connection means are operative to transmit electrical signals that cause one or more of said piezoelectric rings to generate the waves or transmit electrical signals developed by one or more of said piezoelectric rings in response to the waves.

A device as recited in claim 27, wherein said top electrical connection means includes a top electrical node that is positioned in one of said top covering layers and is connected to said top conductive rings, said bottom electrical connection means includes a bottom electrical node that is positioned in one of said bottom covering layers and is connected to said bottom conductive rings, and each of said top and bottom electrical nodes is connected to an electrical wire.

29. A device as recited in claim 27, wherein one or more of said top conductive rings are generated by etching a metal coating formed on one of said top base layers.

30. A device as recited in claim 27, wherein one or more of said bottom conductive rings are generated by etching a metal coating formed on one of said bottom base layers.

A device as recited in claim 27, wherein said top electrical connection means includes a plurality of top electrical nodes respectively connected to said top conductive rings, said bottom electrical connection means includes a plurality of bottom electrical nodes respectively connected to said bottom conductive rings, and each of said top and bottom electrical nodes is connected to an electrical wire.

32. A device as recited in claim 31, wherein each of said piezoelectric rings can generate the waves or develop the electrical signals in response to the waves.

33. A device as recited in claim 31, wherein each of said top electrical nodes is formed in one of said top covering layers and each of said bottom electrical nodes is formed in one of said bottom covering layers.
