Abstract

An ultra-wideband communications network and methods for communication are provided. In one embodiment, an ultra-wideband transceiver transmits digital video data that is in a lossy or lossless compression format. The lossy or lossless format may be a wavelet-based format. The transmitted ultra-wideband signal may be transmitted in a single or in multiple frequency bands. The network may further include a second ultra-wideband transceiver and a video display device. Claims

1. A communication apparatus, comprising:

a storage media containing video data in a lossless compression format; and

an ultra-wideband transceiver communicating with the storage medium and transmitting the data through a communications medium.

2. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the video data is selected from a group consisting of:

a high definition video image, and a standard definition video image.

3. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the lossless compression format is selected from a group consisting of:

a wavelet transform based format, a Huffman coded format, an arithmetic coded format, an entropy encoded format, a progressive encoded format, a Lempel-Ziv coded format, and a format compliant with the JPEG 2000 standard.

4. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the storage medium is selected from a group consisting of:

a magnetic storage medium, an optical storage medium and a solid-state storage medium.

5. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver employs a technology selected from a group consisting of:

an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology, a direct sequence spread spectrum technology and an impulse technology.

6. The communication apparatus of claim 4, wherein the direct sequence spread spectrum technology uses spreading codes selected from a group consisting of:

block codes, hierarchal codes, Walsh codes, Golay codes, and ternary codes.

7. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver transmits the video data using a single radio frequency band or transmits the video data using multiple radio frequency bands.

8. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver employs forward error correction.

9. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the communications medium is selected from a group consisting of:

a wireless medium, an electrically conductive wire medium, and an optical medium.

10. The communication apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver comprises a first ultra-wideband transceiver, the network further comprising a second ultra-wideband transceiver communicating with the communications medium and a display device communicating with the second ultra-wideband transceiver.

11. The communication apparatus of claim 10, wherein the second ultra-wideband transceiver employs a technology selected from a group consisting of:

an impulse technology, a direct sequence spread spectrum technology, and an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology.

12. The communication apparatus of claim 11, wherein the direct sequence spread spectrum technology uses spreading codes that are selected from a group consisting of:

block codes, hierarchal codes, Walsh codes, Golay codes, and ternary codes.

13. The communication apparatus of claim 10, wherein the second ultra-wideband transceiver receives the video data from a single radio frequency band or receives the video data from multiple radio frequency bands.

14. The communication apparatus of claim 10, wherein the display device is selected from a group consisting of a stationary electronic device, a portable electronic device, and a personal computer.

15. A communication method, the method comprising the steps of:

reading video data encoded in a lossless compression format from a storage medium; and

transmitting the video data using an ultra-wideband transceiver to transmit across a communications medium.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the lossless compression format is selected from a group consisting of:

a wavelet transform based format, a Huffman coded format, an arithmetic coded format, a progressive encoded format, an entropy encoded format, a Lempel-Ziv coded format, and a format compliant with the JPEG 2000 standard.

17. The method of claim 15, wherein the storage medium is selected from a group consisting of:

a magnetic storage medium, an optical storage medium and a solid-state storage medium.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver employs a technology selected from a group consisting of:

an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology, a direct sequence spread spectrum technology and an impulse technology.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the direct sequence spread spectrum technology uses spreading codes that are selected from a group consisting of:

block codes, hierarchal codes, Walsh codes, Golay codes, and ternary codes.

20. The method of claim 15, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver transmits the video data using a single radio frequency band or transmits the video data using multiple radio frequency bands.

21. The method of claim 15, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver employs forward error correction.

22. The method of claim 15, wherein the communications medium is selected from a group consisting of:

a wireless medium, an electrically conductive wire medium, and an optical medium.

23. The method of claim 15, wherein the ultra-wideband transceiver is a first ultra-wideband transceiver, the method further comprising the steps of:

receiving the video data from the communications medium by a second ultra-wideband transceiver; and

displaying the video data on a display device.

24. The method of claim 23, wherein the second ultra-wideband transceiver employs a technology selected from a group consisting of:

an impulse technology, a direct sequence spread spectrum technology, and an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing technology.

25. The method of claim 24, wherein the direct sequence spread spectrum technology uses spreading codes that are selected from a group consisting of:

block codes, hierarchal codes, Walsh codes, Golay codes, and ternary codes.

26. The method of claim 23, wherein the second ultra-wideband transceiver receives the video data from a single radio frequency band or from multiple radio frequency bands.

27. The method of claim 23, wherein the display device is selected from a group consisting of:

a stationary electronic device, a portable electronic device, and a personal computer.
