Abstract

The present invention provides compounds and materials that reduce the accumulation of microorganisms a surface, by interfering with the attachment of the organisms to the surface. The compounds and materials are thus useful in preventing the formation of biofilms on surfaces in health-related environments. By preventing the formation of biofilms, the compounds formulated according to the present invention can be used in the fabrication of grafts, implants, medical devices in order to prevent infection thereof. The compounds formulated according to the present invention display an additional anticoagulant property, permitting their use in settings where decrease in blood coagulability is desirable.

87. A method of preventing fouling on the surface of a medical device comprising contacting the surface with an effective amount of anti-fouling compound represented by general structure 1:

Y represents O, S, or NR;

Z represents optionally substituted alkyl, aryl, heteroaryl, or aralkyl;

R represents independently for each occurrence hydrogen, alkyl, or aryl.

88. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH or Cl.

89. The method of claim 87, wherein Y is O.

90. The method of claim 87, wherein Z is alkyl.

91. The method of claim 87, wherein Z is aryl.

92. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH or Cl, and Y is O.

93. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH or Cl, Y is O, and Z is alkyl.

94. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH or Cl, Y is O, and Z is aryl.

95. The method of claim 87, wherein Z is methyl, n-octyl, phenyl, 4-(2-methylpropyl)phenyl, 4-(1,1-dimethylethyl)phenyl, 4-(1,1-dimethylpropyl)phenyl, 4-pentylphenyl, 4-(1-methyl-1-phenylethyl)phenyl, or 4-(1-methylheptyl)phenyl.

96. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH, Y is O, and Z is methyl.

97. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH, Y is O, and Z is n-octyl.

98. The method of claim 87, wherein X is OH, Y is O, and Z is phenyl.

99. The method of claim 87, wherein X is Cl, Y is O, and Z is 4-t-butylphenyl.

100. The method of claim 87, wherein X is Cl, Y is O, and Z is 4-t-pentylphenyl.

101. The method of claim 87, wherein the anti-fouling compound is dissolved or dispersed in a medium.

104. The method of claim 87, wherein contacting the surface comprises spraying, wetting, immersing, dipping, or painting the surface.

105. The method of claim 87, wherein the medical device is a scalpel, needle, scissors, catheter, orthopedic pins, artificial heart, artificial kidney, implant, plate, prostheses, glove, apron, faceshield, counter top, or water tube.

103. The method of claim 103, wherein the medium is an aqueous medium.

102. The method of claim 103, wherein the medium comprises phenolic resin, silicone polymer, epoxy resin, polyamide resin, vinyl resin, elastomer, acrylate polymer, silicone resin, polyester, chlorinated rubber, polyurethane, latex, or fluoropolymer.
