1. A method for powering a device that communicates with a satellite, comprising:
- operating the device in a first power mode when a handset coupled to the device is turned on, the first power mode representing a standby mode in which the device is configured to receive signals from the satellite;
operating the device in a second power mode when the handset is in a transmission mode associated with transmitting signals to the satellite, the second power mode representing a full power mode; and
maintaining the device in the first power mode when the transmission mode is terminated.

Abstract
A communication device may include a power source, a transmitter configured to transmit radio frequency signals to a satellite via a satellite-based network and a receiver configured to receive radio frequency signals from the satellite via the satellite-based network. The communication device may also include logic configured to receive power mode control information from a handset coupled to the communication device. The logic may also be configured to provide power to components of the communication device from the power source based on the power mode control information.
