Abstract

A pulse oximeter sensor comprising a light emitter and a detector disposed on a substrate layer with a plurality of perforations or variations in thickness between the light emitter and the detector. The plurality of perforations or variations in thickness blocks or scatters light shunted via the substrate layer from the light emitter to the detector, and may be configured such that less than 10% of the light detectable by the detector is shunted light.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter;

a light detector; and

a layer coupled to the light emitter and the light detector, wherein a portion of the layer located between the light emitter and the light detector comprises a plurality of holes.

2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector.

3. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

4. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

5. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least two of the plurality of holes have a different orientation.

6. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes penetrate through the layer.

7. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes do not penetrate through the layer.

8. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the inside walls of the layer surrounding the plurality of holes are colored to be substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

9. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are filled with a colored filling material that is substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

10. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are filled with a putty.

11. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the layer comprises an opening for the light emitter and an opening for the light detector.

12. The sensor of claim 1, wherein one side of the layer comprises an adhesive for adhering the sensor to a tissue location on a patient.

13. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the layer covers a light emitting side of the light emitter.

14. The sensor of claim 1, comprising a substrate layer coupled to the layer, wherein the light emitter and the light detector are mounted on the substrate layer.

15. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes in the layer interrupt the light path between light emitter and the light detector.

16. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer such that the layer does not comprise a direct light path between the light emitter and the light detector.

17. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer in a plurality of rows with alternating patterns.

18. A sensor substrate comprising:

a layer, wherein one end of the layer comprises a location for a light emitter and another other end of the layer comprises a location for a light detector; and

a plurality of holes disposed in the layer, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the location for the light emitter to the location for the light detector.

19. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein at least two of the plurality of holes have a different orientation.

20. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes penetrate through the layer.

21. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes do not penetrate through the layer.

22. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the inside walls of the layer surrounding the plurality of holes are colored to be substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

23. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes are filled with a colored filling material that is substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

24. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes are filled with a putty.

25. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the location for the light emitter comprises a first opening in the layer, and the location for the light detector comprises a second opening in the layer.

26. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein one side of the layer comprises an adhesive for adhering the substrate to a tissue location on a patient.

27. The sensor substrate of claim 18, comprising one or more additional layers coupled to the layer.

28. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes in the layer interrupt the light path between location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector.

29. The sensor substrate of claim 18 wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer such that the layer does not comprise a direct light path between the location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector.

30. The sensor substrate of claim 18, wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer in a plurality of rows with alternating patterns.

31. A method of manufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a light emitter;

providing a light detector; and

providing a layer coupled to the light emitter and the light detector, wherein a portion of the layer located between the light emitter and the light detector comprises a plurality of holes.

32. The method of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

33. The sensor of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

34. The method of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector via the layer.

35. The method of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes in the layer interrupt the light path between location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector.

36. The method of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer such that the layer does not comprise a direct light path between the location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector.

37. The method of claim 31, wherein the plurality of holes are arranged in the layer in a plurality of rows with alternating patterns.

38. The method of claim 31, comprising providing a substrate layer coupled to the layer, wherein the light emitter and the light detector are mounted on the substrate layer.

39. A method of remanufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a sensor comprising a substrate, a light emitter coupled to the substrate, and a light detector coupled to the substrate; and

coupling a layer to the sensor, wherein a portion of the layer located between the light emitter and the light detector comprises a plurality of holes.

40. The method of claim 39, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

41. The sensor of claim 39, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

42. A method of operating a sensor comprising:

emitting light at a patient with a light emitter coupled to a layer; and

detecting light from the patient with a light detector coupled to the layer, wherein the layer comprises a plurality of holes between the light emitter and the light emitter, wherein the plurality of holes attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector.

43. The method of claim 42, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

44. The sensor of claim 42, wherein the plurality of holes are configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.
