Abstract

A pulse oximeter sensor comprising an emitter and a detector disposed on a substrate layer with a thinned portion between the emitter and the detector. A partially transparent covering layer covers the substrate layer and comprises a corresponding thinned portion. The thinned portions attenuate light shunted via the substrate layer and the partially transparent covering layer from the emitter to the detector, and may be configured such that less than 10% of the light detectable by the detector is shunted light.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

a substrate comprising one or more layers;

a light emitter mounted on the substrate;

a light detector mounted on the substrate; and

a flexible circuit printed on at least one of the one or more layers of the substrate, wherein the flexible circuit is configured to block light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

2. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the flexible circuit is configured to block light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

3. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the flexible circuit comprises metal traces arranged on the substrate in a tortuous path for light shunted from the light emitter.

4. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the flexible circuit comprises a first segment that extends in a direction substantially along the length of the substrate and a second segment that extends in a direction substantially along the width of the substrate.

5. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the substrate comprises a base layer and a second layer coupled to the base layer over the light emitter and the light detector.

6. The sensor of claim 5, wherein the base layer and the second layer are substantially opaque.

7. A sensor substrate comprising:

a base layer, wherein one end of the base layer comprises a location for a light emitter, and another end of the base layer comprises a location for a light detector;

a second layer coupled to the base layer over the location for the light emitter and over the location for the light detector; and

a flexible circuit printed on the base layer, wherein the flexible circuit is configured to block light shunted from the light emitter, such that less than 10% of light detectable at the location for the light detector is shunted light.

8. The sensor substrate of claim 7, wherein the flexible circuit comprises metal traces arranged on the base layer in a tortuous path for light shunted from the light emitter.

9. The sensor substrate of claim 7, wherein the flexible circuit comprises a first segment that extends in a direction substantially along the length of the base layer and a second segment that extends in a direction substantially along the width of the base layer.

10. The sensor substrate of claim 7, wherein the base layer and the second layer are substantially opaque.

11. A method of manufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a light detector mounted on a substrate and a light emitter mounted on the substrate, wherein the substrate comprises one or more layers; and

providing a flexible circuit printed on at least one of the one or more layers of the substrate, wherein the flexible circuit is configured to block light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the flexible circuit is configured to block light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

13. The method of claim 11, wherein the flexible circuit comprises metal traces arranged on the substrate in a tortuous path for light shunted from the light emitter.

14. The method of claim 11, wherein the flexible circuit comprises a first segment that extends in a direction substantially along the length of the substrate and a second segment that extends in a direction substantially along the width of the substrate.

15. The method of claim 11, wherein the substrate comprises a base layer and a second layer coupled to the base layer over the light emitter and the light detector.

16. A method of operating a sensor comprising:

emitting light at a patient with a light emitter mounted on a substrate, the substrate comprising one or more layers; and

detecting light from the patient with a light detector mounted on the substrate, wherein a flexible circuit printed on at least one of the one or more layers of the substrate blocks light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the flexible circuit blocks light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein the flexible circuit blocks light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of the light detected by the detector is shunted light.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein the flexible circuit comprises metal traces arranged on the substrate in a tortuous path for light shunted from the light emitter.

20. The method of claim 16, wherein the flexible circuit comprises a first segment that extends in a direction substantially along the length of the substrate and a second segment that extends in a direction substantially along the width of the substrate.

21. The method of claim 16, wherein the substrate comprises a base layer and a second layer coupled to the base layer over the light emitter and the light detector.
