Abstract

A pulse oximeter sensor comprising an emitter and a detector disposed on a substrate layer with a thinned portion between the emitter and the detector. A partially transparent covering layer covers the substrate layer and comprises a corresponding thinned portion. The thinned portions attenuate light shunted via the substrate layer and the partially transparent covering layer from the emitter to the detector, and may be configured such that less than 10% of the light detectable by the detector is shunted light.

Claims

1. A sensor comprising:

a light emitter;

a light detector;

a layer coupled to the light emitter and the light detector; and

a crimping member coupled to the layer between the light emitter and the light detector, the crimping member forming a crimped portion in the layer, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

2. The sensor of claim 1, comprising a substrate layer coupled to the layer, wherein the light emitter and the light detector are mounted on the substrate layer.

3. The sensor of claim 2, comprising a second crimping member coupled to the substrate layer between the light emitter and the light detector, the second crimping member forming a crimped portion in the substrate layer.

4. The sensor of claim 2, wherein the layer is coupled to the substrate layer over the light emitter and the light detector.

5. The sensor of claim 4, wherein the layer comprises a first window for the light emitter and a second window for the light detector.

6. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the crimping member is substantially opaque to selected wavelengths of light from the light emitter.

7. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the crimping member is substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

8. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

9. The sensor of claim 1, wherein the crimping member comprises a metal.

10. The sensor of claim 1, wherein at least a portion of the layer is transparent to light emitted from the light emitter.

11. The sensor of claim 1, wherein one side of the layer comprises an adhesive for adhering the sensor to a tissue location on a patient.

12. A sensor substrate comprising:

a base layer, wherein one end of the base layer comprises a location for a light emitter, and another end of the base layer comprises a location for a light detector;

a second layer coupled to the base layer over the location for the light emitter and the location for the light detector; and

a crimping member coupled to the second layer between the location for the light emitter and the light detector, the crimping member forming a crimped portion in the second layer, wherein the crimping member is substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

13. The sensor substrate of claim 12, comprising a second crimping member coupled to the base layer between the location for the light emitter and the light detector, the second crimping member forming a crimped portion in the base layer.

14. The sensor substrate of claim 12, wherein one side of the second layer comprises an adhesive for adhering the substrate to a tissue location on a patient.

15. A method of manufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a light detector and a light emitter coupled to a layer, wherein the layer comprises a crimped portion, the crimped portion formed by a crimping member coupled to the layer between the light detector and the light emitter, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the crimping member is substantially opaque to red light and to infrared light.

17. The method of claim 15, comprising providing a substrate layer coupled to the layer, wherein the light detector and the light emitter are mounted on the substrate layer.

18. The method of claim 17, comprising providing a second crimping member coupled to the substrate layer between the light detector and the light emitter to form a crimped portion in the substrate layer.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

20. A method of remanufacturing a sensor comprising:

providing a sensor comprising a substrate, a light emitter coupled to the substrate, and a light detector coupled to the substrate; and

coupling a layer to the sensor over the light emitter and the light detector, wherein the layer comprises a crimped portion, the crimped portion formed by a crimping member coupled to the layer between the light emitter and the light detector, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light detectable by the light detector is shunted light.

22. A method of operating a sensor comprising:

emitting light at a patient with a light emitter coupled to a layer; and

detecting light from the patient with a light detector coupled to the layer, wherein light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector is attenuated with a crimping member coupled to the layer to form a crimped portion in the layer.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 10% of light detected by the light detector is shunted light.

24. The method of claim 22, wherein the crimping member is configured to attenuate light shunted from the light emitter to the light detector such that less than 1% of light dectected by the light detector is shunted light.

25. The method of claim 22, wherein the light emitter and the light detector are mounted on a substrate layer, wherein the layer is coupled to the substrate layer over the light emitter and the light detector.

26. The method of claim 22, wherein the substrate layer comprises a crimped portion, the crimped portion formed by a second crimping member coupled to the substrate layer.

27. The method of claim 22, wherein emitting light at a patient comprises emitting light through a transparent portion of the layer.

28. The method of claim 22, wherein emitting light at a patient comprises emitting light through an opening in the layer.
