Abstract

A method and system provides arrangements creating a relationship between a real-world entity and a virtual world environment. A participant or player can participate in various virtual world experiences including activities, settings, events, purchases, sales and diverse transactions to acquire virtual products, virtual services, and/or virtual items of value. Feedback may be provided and records kept regarding the virtual world participation. In some circumstances, multiple persons can participate as a group or participate as individuals in the virtual world environment. Some embodiments provide virtual world oversight protection related to one or more selected aspects of a virtual world environment. In some implementations different types of oversight guidelines and related virtual world rating plans are available for selection by prospective and current virtual world patrons.

Claims

1. A method for implementing auxiliary control in a virtual world environment, comprising:

providing a possibility of supplemental oversight protection in a virtual world environment;

establishing a set of guidelines relating to one or more selected aspects of the virtual world environment;

incorporating the set of guidelines as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to a particular real-world participant or player in the virtual world environment.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said providing the possibility of supplemental oversight protection includes:

making a real-world communication contact with the real-world participant or player regarding possible implementation in the virtual world environment of the supplemental oversight protection with respect to one or more virtual world characters.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said providing the possibility of supplemental oversight protection includes:

making a virtual world communication contact with the real-world participant or player regarding possible implementation in the virtual world environment of the supplemental oversight protection with respect to one or more virtual world characters.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said incorporating the guidelines includes:

making the supplemental oversight protection available to a prospective or current real-world participant or player in the virtual world environment.

5. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

obtaining approval of the guidelines from or on behalf of the particular real-world participant or player.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein said obtaining approval includes;

obtaining approval by communicating in the virtual world environment with a virtual character of the particular real-world participant or player.

7. The method of claim 5 wherein said obtaining approval includes:

obtaining approval by communicating in a real-world environment with the real-world participant or player.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing accessibility to two or more guideline sources as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to the particular participant or player in the virtual world environment; and

allowing the particular participant or player to choose a designated collection of guidelines from among the two or more guideline sources.

9. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing accessibility to two or more guideline sources as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to the particular participant or player in the virtual world environment; and

allowing the particular participant or player to choose one set of guidelines from among the two or more guideline sources.

10. The method of claim 1 wherein said establishing a set of guidelines includes:

adopting one or more individual guidelines from a third party.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said adopting includes:

adopting a set of guidelines from a third party.

12. The method of claim 1 wherein said establishing a set of guidelines includes;

adopting one or more individual guidelines provided by the particular participant or player.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein said adopting includes:

adopting a set of guidelines provided by the particular participant or player.

14. The method of claim 1 wherein said incorporating the guidelines includes:

incorporating the guidelines as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to a particular real-world group of real-world participants or players in the virtual world environment.

15. The method of claim 1 wherein said incorporating the guidelines includes:

incorporating the guidelines as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to a particular virtual world group of virtual world characters in the virtual world environment.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein said incorporating the guidelines includes:

incorporating the guidelines as part of the supplemental oversight protection that is made available to members of a particular real-world group or a particular virtual world group.

17. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing the supplemental oversight protection by making a certain setting and/or activity and/or location and/or experience in the virtual world environment “

off limits”

to the particular participant or player.

18. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing the supplemental oversight protection by making a certain setting and/or activity and/or location and/or experience in the virtual world environment subject to a maximum continuous time limit with respect to the particular participant or player.

19. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing the supplemental oversight protection by making a certain setting and/or activity and/or location and/or experience in the virtual world environment subject to a maximum cumulative time limit for a given time period with respect to the particular participant or player.

20. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

implementing the supplemental oversight protection by making a certain setting and/or activity and/or location and/or experience in the virtual world environment subject to a context-related control with respect to the particular participant or player.

21. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing status feedback to the particular participant or player regarding compliance and/or noncompliance with the guidelines of the supplemental oversight protection.

22. The method of claim 1 wherein said establishing the set of guidelines includes:

establishing a limitation with respect to the one or more selected aspects of the virtual world environment, wherein compliance with such limitation causes a consequential result.

23. The method of claim 22 which further provides that voluntary compliance with such limitation causes the consequential result.

24. The method of claim 22 which further provides that compliance with such limitation causes the consequential result that is beneficial to the real-world participant or player.

25. The method of claim 22 wherein said compliance with such limitation causes the consequential result that includes one or more of the following types of consequence:

enhancement;

virtual world benefit;

award of something of virtual world value;

award of virtual world opportunity;

real-world benefit;

award of something of real-world value;

award of real-world opportunity;

award to the particular participant or player;

award to real-world group;

award to virtual character;

award to virtual world group;

benefit to designated third party; and

benefit to designated charity.

26. The method of claim 1 wherein said establishing the set of guidelines includes:

establishing a limitation with respect to the one or more selected aspects of the virtual world environment, wherein non-compliance with such limitation causes a consequential result.

27. The method of claim 26 wherein said non-compliance with such limitation causes a consequential result that is detrimental to the real-world participant or player.

28. The method of claim 26 wherein said non-compliance with such limitation causes the consequential result that includes one or more of the following types of consequence:

restriction;

forfeiture;

virtual world detriment;

virtual world penalty;

loss of something of virtual world value;

loss of virtual world opportunity;

real-world detriment;

real-world penalty;

loss of something of real-world value;

loss of real-world opportunity;

penalty for the particular participant or player;

penalty for real-world group;

penalty for virtual character;

penalty for virtual world group; and

penalty for designated third party.

29. The method of claim 1 incorporated as program instructions in one or more computer program products.

30. The method of claim 29 wherein the one or more computer program products comprise a carrier medium for encoding the program instructions.

31. The method of claim 30 wherein the carrier medium includes a storage medium and/or a transmission medium.

32. A system for oversight protection in a virtual world environment, comprising:

computer means for creating the virtual world environment;

a set of oversight guidelines applicable to selected aspects of virtual world participation by a particular virtual character, which oversight guidelines are acceptable to a real-world patron acting as the particular virtual character; and

a control module operably coupled with the computer means to implement the oversight guidelines in the virtual world environment, and to track progress of the particular virtual character with respect to the selected aspects of virtual world participation in the virtual world environment.

33. The system of claim 32 wherein said oversight guidelines include:

a limitation established regarding the one or more selected aspects of the virtual world participation, wherein a violation of such limitation results in one or more of the following types of virtual world enforcement imposed on the particular participant or player;

automatic logoff from virtual world;

automatic logoff from selected setting;

automatic logoff from selected activity;

automatic logoff from selected location;

limitation on ability to participate;

reduced character strength;

character fatigue;

loss of level participation right;

loss of skill;

reversion to previous status;

display visible deprecatory label on character;

incorporate detectible undesirable character ID;

prevent access during specified time period;

prevent access during specified calendar period; and

prevent access under specific condition.

34. The system of claim 32 wherein said oversight guidelines include:

a limitation established regarding the one or more selected aspects of the virtual world participation, wherein compliance with such limitation results in one or more of the following types of virtual world reward given to the particular participant or player;

virtual currency, value token, experience medal, discount coupon, access to virtual product, access to virtual service, access to virtual event, access to virtual location, access key, re-admittance to barred site, re-admittance to barred activity, communication link permission, level participation permit, guest pass, compliance certification, display visible laudatory label on character, incorporate detectible desirable character ID, allow access during specified time period, allow access during specified calendar period, allow access under specific condition, and extended logon privilege.

35. The system of claim 32 wherein said control module enables status feedback communicated to the real-world patron and/or to the particular virtual character regarding the selected aspects of the virtual world participation tracked pursuant to the oversight guidelines.

36. The system of claim 35 wherein said control module enables status feedback communicated by one or more of the following techniques:

real-time data, periodic reports, data summary, text message, audio message, onscreen message, printout, webpage display, communication by avatar, suggestion by avatar, detection by agent, modification of a virtual world object, interaction with a virtual world character, and interaction with a virtual world entity.

37. The system of claim 32 wherein said oversight guidelines are applicable to selected aspects of virtual world participation by a designated group of particular virtual characters.

The system of claim 37 wherein said oversight guidelines provide a virtual world consequential result that affects the designated group, which consequential result is at least partially based on compliance and/or non-compliance with said oversight guidelines by one or more of the particular virtual group characters in the group.

The system of claim 37 wherein said oversight guidelines provide a virtual world consequential result that affects one or more of the particular virtual group characters, which consequential result is at least partially based on compliance and/or non-compliance with said oversight guidelines by the designated group.

40. The system of claim 32 wherein said oversight guidelines are applicable to one or more of the following types of selected aspects of virtual world participation by the particular virtual character:

current virtual world incentive goal, cumulative time for tracked virtual world aspect, setting visited, activity performed, entertainment viewed, event attended, participation summary from another virtual world environment, group identity, identity of group members, time spent “

on line”

at virtual world, frequency of specified behavior, time spent at specific addictive-type activity, cumulative addictive-type behavior statistic, achievement report for selected educational setting, list of actual chat room participants, identification of anticipatory warning of undesirable activity, identification of visit proximate to undesirable destination, identification of attempt to visit off-limits location, value symbol acquired, value symbol lost, item purchased, value script status, and balance owed status.

41. A computer program product comprising:

(a) program instructions configured to perform a process that associates information in a computer system, the process including

providing a virtual world environment that is accessible to a real-world patron,

establishing a set of oversight guidelines applicable to one or more selected aspects of virtual world participation by a particular virtual character, which oversight guidelines are chosen by the real-world patron acting as the particular virtual character,

implementing the oversight guidelines in the virtual world environment,

tracking progress of the particular virtual character with respect to the one or more selected aspects of virtual world participation in the virtual world environment; and

(b) a computer-readable signal-bearing media bearing the program instructions.

42. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the signal-bearing media includes a storage medium.

43. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the signal-bearing media includes a communication medium.

44. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the process further includes:

providing informational feedback to the real-world patron regarding enforcement status of the oversight guidelines.

45. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the process further includes:

providing informational feedback to the particular virtual character regarding enforcement status of the oversight guidelines.

46. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the process further includes:

enabling informational feedback regarding the oversight guidelines to be communicated to the real-world patron and/or to the particular virtual character by one or more of the following techniques;

real-time data, periodic reports, data summary, text message, audio message, onscreen message, printout, webpage display, communication by avatar, suggestion by avatar, detection by agent, modification of a virtual world object, interaction with a virtual world character, and interaction with a virtual world entity.

47. The computer program product of claim 41, wherein the process further includes:

establishing confirmation of a virtual world criterion or occurrence related to the particular virtual character; and

responsive to the confirmation, providing a consequential virtual world result affecting the particular virtual character in accordance with the oversight guidelines.

48. The computer program product of claim 47, wherein the process further includes:

responsive to the confirmation that establishes compliance with the oversight guidelines, implementing the consequential virtual world result that includes a virtual world benefit awarded to the real-world patron.

49. The computer program product of claim 47 wherein the process further includes:

responsive to the confirmation that establishes non-compliance with the oversight guidelines, implementing the consequential virtual world result that includes a virtual world penalty imposed on the real-world patron.
