Abstract

This invention relates to systems and methods for wireless and wired optical data communications, in particular infrared data communications using techniques borrowed ultra wideband (UWB) radio. Data is input for communication. The data defines a plurality of data symbols for transmission. Each the data symbol is encoded onto first and second optical carriers. The encoding comprises encoding each of the data symbols as respective first and second pulse packets each comprising at least one optical pulse. The encoding uses a common pulse packet position modulation for the first and second carriers. The first and second optical carriers have respective first and second optical wavelengths. An optical signal comprising the first and second optical carriers is transmitted, received, and decoded to recover the data symbols.

Claims

1. A method of optical data communication using optical pulse package modulation, the method comprising:

inputting data for communication, the data defining a plurality of data symbols for transmission;

encoding each of the data symbols onto first and second optical carriers, the encoding onto the first and second optical carriers comprising encoding a the data symbols as respective first and second pulse packets each comprising at least one optical pulse, the encoding using a common pulse packet position modulation for the first and second carriers, the first and second optical carriers having respective first and second optical wavelengths;

transmitting an optical signal comprising the first and second optical carriers;

receiving the transmitted optical signal comprising the first and second optical carriers; and

decoding the optical signal to recover the data symbols.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the receiving comprises:

receiving the first and second optical carriers using first and second respective optical receivers;

, and combining outputs of the first and second optical receivers to provide a combined signal for the decoding.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the decoding comprises processing the combined signal using a common correlator to decode the common pulse packet position modulation.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the combining includes delaying one of the optical receiver outputs with respect to the other.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the combining comprises summing the optical receiver outputs, and the method further comprises:

digitizing the combined signal prior to the decoding with at least two bit signal level resolution.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second pulse packets are substantially the same.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second pulse packets comprise pseudo-random substantially mutually orthogonal pulse sequences.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the first and second optical wavelengths are different, and wherein the optical communication comprises free-space infrared optical communications.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the optical communication comprises optical fiber-based communication.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the data symbol comprises a data bit of the data stream.

11. A system for optical data communication using optical pulse package modulation, the system comprising:

an input-to-input data for communication, the data defining a plurality of data symbols for transmission;

an encoder to encode each of the data symbols onto first and second optical carriers, the encoding onto the first and second optical carriers comprising encoding the data symbols as respective first and second pulse packets each comprising at least one optical pulse, the encoding using a common pulse packet position modulation for the first and second carriers, the first and second optical carriers having respective first and second optical wavelengths;

an optical transmitter to transmit an optical signal comprising the first and second optical carriers;

an optical receiver to receive the transmitted optical signal comprising the first and second optical carriers; and

a decoder to decode the optical signal to recover the data symbols.

12. An optical data transmitter configured to transmit data using optical pulse packet modulation, the transmitter comprising:

a data input to receive data for transmission;

an encoder, coupled to the data input and having an encoded data output, the encoder being configured to encode the data for pulse packet position modulation onto first and second optical carriers using respective first and second pulse packets each comprising at least one optical pulse; and

an optical signal transmission system having an input coupled to the encoded data output, the optical signal transmission system being configured to provide an optical output comprising the first and second optical carriers, respectively, modulated by the first and second pulse packets.

13. The optical data transmitter of claim 12, wherein:

the received data defines a plurality of data symbols; and

the encoder is configured to modulate each of the data symbols onto the first and second carriers using a common type of the pulse packet position modulation for the first and second carriers.

14. The optical data transmitter of claim 12, wherein the encoded data output comprises a differential data output having first and second differential components for modulating the first and second carriers, respectively.

15. The optical data transmitter of claim 12, wherein the encoder comprises a UWB pulse generation system.

16. The optical data transmitter of claim 12, wherein the first and second optical carriers have different optical wavelengths.

17. The optical data transmitter of claim 12, wherein the first and second pulse packets each comprise a pulse sequence, the pulse sequences being substantially mutually orthogonal.

18. An optical data receiver configured to receive data encoded using optical pulse packet modulation, the receiver comprising:

an optical signal reception system configured to receive first and second optical carriers and to provide a received signal output; and

a decoder having an input coupled to the received signal output and a decoded data output, that decodes data modulated onto the first and second optical carriers using pulse packet position modulation in which data for reception is encoded across the first and second optical carriers using respective first and second pulse packets each comprising at least one optical pulse, the decoder being configured to provide a combined data output by jointly decoding the data modulated onto the first and second optical carriers.

19. The optical data transmitter of claim 18, wherein the data for reception defines a plurality of symbols each modulated onto both the first and second optical carriers using a common type of the pulse packet position modulation for the first and second carriers.

20. The optical data transmitter of claim 18, wherein:

the optical signal reception system comprises first and second optical receivers having respective first and second outputs to provide the received signal output; and

the decoder has first and second inputs coupled to the first and second optical receiver outputs and further comprises a combiner coupled to the first and second decoder inputs and having a combined signal output for jointly decoding the data modulated onto the first and second optical carriers.

21. The optical data transmitter of claim 20, further comprising:

a digitizer coupled between the combiner and the correlator to provide a combined digitized signal having at least two-bit signal level resolution to the correlator and one-bit signal level resolution for each of the decoder inputs.

22. The optical data transmitter of claim 20, wherein:

the first and second pulse packets comprise substantially the same pattern of one or more optical pulses, one being delayed with respect to the other; and

the decoder includes a delay that delays the signal at one of the first and second decoder inputs with respect to the other to compensate for the delay between the first and second optical pulse packets.

23. The optical data transmitter of claim 18, wherein the decoder comprises a UWB receiver system.

24. The optical data transmitter of claim 18, wherein the first and second optical carriers have different optical wavelengths.
