Abstract

A polarizer includes a first prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms; a polarizing film; and a second prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms, the micro-prisms of the first prism plate and the micro-prisms of the second prism plate meshed with each other and integrated the polarizing film therebetween. Furthermore, a method for manufacturing the polarizer and a backlight module using the polarizer is also provided.

Claims

1. A polarizer comprising:

a first prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms;

a polarizing film; and

a second prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms, the micro-prisms of the first prism plate and the micro-prisms of the second prism plate meshed with each other and integrating the polarizing film therebetween.

2. The polarizer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the first and second prism plates are made from essentially the same material.

3. The polarizer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the same material is glass material.

4. The polarizer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the same material is transmission plastic material.

5. The polarizer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the micro-prisms each has a 90 degree apex angle.

6. The polarizer in accordance with claim 1, wherein the polarizing film is made from a material selected from the group comprising MgF₂, SiO₂, and Ta₂O₅.

11. A backlight module using the polarizer in accordance with claim 1 comprising:

a light guide plate, the light guide plate comprising a light incident surface, a light emitting surface adjoining the light incident surface, and a bottom surface opposite to the light emitting surface;

a light source placed next to the light incident surface;

a polarizer, the polarizer comprising a first prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms;

a polarizing film; and

a second prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms, the micro-prisms of the first prism plate and the micro-prisms of the second prism plate meshed with each other with the polarizing film integrated therebetween;

a reflector; and

a quarter wave plate;

wherein

the polarizer, the LGP, the quarter wave plate, and the reflector are stacked continuously in that order from top to bottom.

12. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the first and second prism plates are made from essentially the same material.

13. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the same material is glass material.

14. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the same material is transmission plastic material.

15. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the micro-prisms each has a 90 degree apex angle.

16. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the polarizing film is made from a material selected from the group comprising MgF₂, SiO₂, and Ta₂O₅.

17. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the light emitting surface of the light guide plate has a plurality of microstructure formed thereon.

18. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the reflector is a reflective sheet.

19. The backlight module in accordance with claim 11, wherein the reflector is a reflective film formed on a surface of the quarter wave plate far from the light guide plate.

7. A method for manufacturing a polarizer comprising the steps of:

providing a first prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms;

forming a polarizing film on surfaces of the micro-prisms of the first prism plate;

providing a second prism plate having a plurality of micro-prisms; and

meshing the micro-prisms of the second prism plate with the micro-prisms of the first prism plate to integrate the polarizing film therebetween.

8. The method for manufacturing a polarizer in accordance with claim 7, wherein the micro-prisms of the first prism plate and the second prism plate are formed by etching.

9. The method for manufacturing a polarizer in accordance with claim 7, wherein the first and second prism plates are formed by injection molding.

10. The method for manufacturing a polarizer in accordance with claim 7, wherein the polarizing film is plated on the surfaces of the micro-prisms of the first prism plate.
