Abstract

Coatings for stents that include a polymer and a drug are provided. A method of forming the coatings is also provided.

Claims

1. A stent comprising a body having a first end and a second end and carrying a coating containing a drug, wherein the concentration of the drug in the coating increases along the length of the body of the stent from the first end to the second end due to an increase in the surface area of the body along the length from the first end to the second end, wherein the surface roughness of the stent increasing from the first end to the second of the stent to provide at least in part the increase in the surface area.

2. The stent of claim 1, wherein the surface roughness increases continuously from the first end to the second end of the stent

3. The stent of claim 1, wherein the surface roughness increases incrementally from the first end to the second end of the stent.

4. The stent of claim 1, wherein the degree of roughness of stent struts increases from the first end to the second end of the stent.

5. A stent comprising a body having a first end and a second end and carrying a coating containing a drug, wherein the concentration of the drug in the coating increases along the length of the body of the stent from the first end to the second end due to an increase in the surface area of the body along the length from the first end to the second end, wherein the dimensions of structural elements of the stent vary from the first end to the second of the stent to provide at least in part the increase in the surface area.

6. The stent of claim 5, wherein the radius or thickness of the structural elements vary from the first end to the second end of the stent.

7. The stent of claim 5, wherein the radius or thickness of at least some of the structural elements decrease from the first end to the second end of the stent.

8. The stent of claim 5, wherein the surface area incrementally increases from the first end to the second end of the stent.

9. A stent comprising a body having a first end and a second end and carrying a coating containing a drug, wherein the release rate of the drug from the coating increases along the length of the body from the first end to the second end, and wherein the thickness of the coating increases and the drug concentration is constant from the first end to the second end.

10. A stent comprising a body having a first end and a second end and carrying a coating containing a drug and a polymer, wherein the coating polymer composition varies from the first end to the second end so that the release rate of the drug from the coating increases along the length of the body from the first end to the second end.

11. The stent of claim 10, wherein the permeability of the drug in the coating polymer varies from the first end to the second end.

12. The stent of claim 10, wherein the coating polymer in selected stent segments comprises a pure first polymer and the coating polymer in other selected segments comprises a pure second polymer, the drug having a higher permeability in the first polymer than the second polymer.

13. The stent of claim 12, wherein the first polymer comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol and the second polymer comprises polybutylmethacrylate.

14. The stent of claim 10, wherein the coating polymer comprises a mixture of a first polymer and a second polymer, the ratio of the first polymer to the second polymer in the mixture increases between the first end and the second end, the drug having a higher permeability in the first polymer than the second polymer.

15. The stent of claim 14, wherein the first polymer comprises ethylene vinyl alcohol and the second polymer comprises polybutylmethacrylate.

16. The stent of claim 10, wherein the coating thickness is constant from the first end to the second end of the stent.

17. A stent comprising a body having a first end and a second end and comprising a body coating including a drug, wherein the coating drug concentration and the coating drub permeability increase along the stent body from the first end to the second end.

18. The stent of claim 17, wherein the coating comprises a polymer, the permeability of the coating polymer increasing from the first end to the second end.

19. A stent having a body with a first end and a second end, the body comprising depots disposed in the stent body surface and filled with a drug, wherein the number of depots per areal unit on the surface increases along the stent body from the first end to the second end.

20. A stent having a body with a first end and a second end, the body comprising depots disposed in the stent body surface and filled with a drug, wherein:

the number of depots per areal unit on the surface increases along the stent body from the first end to the second end; and

a permeability of the drug in the depots increases along the stent body from the first end to the second end.

21. A stent having a body with a first end and a second end, the body comprising depots disposed on a surface of the body filled with a drug, wherein the volume of the depots on the surface and the coating drug permeability increase along the stent body from the first end to the second end.
