Abstract

The present invention provides a method of copying, using a substrate, object data to a clipboard of a graphical user interface operating system, the substrate having a graphical representation of the object data disposed therein or thereon, the substrate also having coded data disposed therein or thereon, the coded data identifying a plurality of locations on the substrate, the coded data also identifying a layout of the graphical representation of the object data, the method including the steps of: receiving, from a sensing device and in a computer system, indicating data, the indicating data describing movement of the sensing device relative to the substrate, the indicating data also identifying the layout of the graphical representation of the object data, the sensing device, when moved relative to the substrate, adapted to read at least some of the coded data and generate, from the at least some coded data, the indicating data; retrieving, in the computer system and using the indicating data, the object data; and copying the object data to the clipboard.

Claims

1. A method of copying, using a substrate, object data to a clipboard of a graphical user interface operating system, the substrate having a graphical representation of the object data disposed therein or thereon, the substrate also having coded data disposed therein or thereon, the coded data identifying a plurality of locations on the substrate, the coded data also identifying a layout of the graphical representation of the object data, the method including the steps of:

receiving, from a sensing device and in a computer system, indicating data, the indicating data describing movement of the sensing device relative to the substrate, the indicating data also identifying the layout of the graphical representation of the object data, the sensing device, when moved relative to the substrate, adapted to read at least some of the coded data and generate, from the at least some coded data, the indicating data;

retrieving, in the computer system and using the indicating data, the object data; and

copying the object data to the clipboard.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the object data is selected from the group comprising:

plain text, styled text, HTML, graphics, image data, video data, audio data, script data, document data, and a document URI.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the object data is a clipping from a page.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the clipping includes a representation of digital ink strokes.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the clipping includes active hyperlinks.

6. The method of claim 1 further including the step of pasting the object data to an application.

12. The method of claim 1 further including the further step of initiating the copy operation based on the indicating data.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of initiating the copy operation includes identifying movement of the sensing device relative to a command button associated with the copy operation.

14. The method of claim 12 wherein the step of initiating the copy operation includes identifying gestural movement of the sensing device, the gestural movement associated with the copy operation.

A method of invoking, using a substrate, an application with specified text as a parameter, the substrate having a graphical representation of the specified text disposed therein or thereon, the substrate also having coded data disposed therein or thereon, the coded data identifying a plurality of locations on the substrate, the coded data also identifying a layout of the graphical representation of the text, the method including the steps of:

receiving, from a sensing device and in a computer system, indicating data, the indicating data describing movement of the sensing device relative to the substrate, the indicating data also identifying the layout of the graphical representation of the specified text, the sensing device, when moved relative to the substrate, adapted to read at least some of the coded data and generate, from the at least some coded data, the indicating data;

retrieving, in the computer system and using the indicating data, the specified text; and

invoking the application with the specified text as a parameter.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein the application is selected from the group comprising:

a text search application, a Web search application, Google, Yahoo!, a dictionary application, an encyclopedia application, wikipedia, and a translation application.

9. The method of claim 7 further including the further step of identifying, from the indicating data, the application.

10. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of identifying the application includes identifying movement of the sensing device relative to a command button associated with the application.

11. The method of claim 9 wherein the step of identifying the application includes identifying gestural movement of the sensing device, the gestural movement associated with the application.

15. A system for copying, using a substrate, object data to a clipboard of a graphical user interface operating system, the substrate having a graphical representation of the object data disposed therein or thereon, the substrate also having coded data disposed therein or thereon, the coded data identifying a plurality of locations on the substrate, the coded data also identifying a layout of the graphical representation of the object data, the system including:

a sensing device adapted to read, when moved relative to the substrate, at least some of the coded data and to generate, from the at least some coded data, indicating data, the indicating data describing movement of the sensing device relative to the substrate, the indicating data also identifying the layout of the graphical representation of the object data; and

a computer system configured to;

receive, from the sensing device, the indicating data;

retrieve, using the indicating data, the object data; and

copy the object data to the clipboard.

A system for invoking, using a substrate, an application with specified text as a parameter, the substrate having a graphical representation of the specified text disposed therein or thereon, the substrate also having coded data disposed therein or thereon, the coded data identifying a plurality of locations on the substrate, the coded data also identifying a layout of the graphical representation of the text, the system including:

a sensing device adapted to read, when moved relative to the substrate, at least some of the coded data and to generate, from the at least some coded data, indicating data, the indicating data describing movement of the sensing device relative to the substrate, the indicating data also identifying the layout of the graphical representation of the specified text; and

a computer system configured to;

receive, from the sensing device, the indicating data;

retrieve, using the indicating data, the specified text; and

invoke the application with the specified text as a parameter.
