Abstract

Non-administrators selectively move content from a source network to a destination network. The source network includes a deployment server that can deploy an item and its dependencies (if any) listed in a quick deploy list without having to get specific administrator authorization for the deployment. The deployment server can be configured to check the quick deploy list relatively frequently so that any items listed in the quick deploy list are quickly deployed. The listing of items in the quick deploy list is organized into “jobs” and identifies a path that indicates the source and destination for each job. A job is associated with one path and specifies one or more items of the source to be deployed and a schedule to deploy the specified item(s). The deployment server is configured by the administrator with permissions for specific authors to list items in the quick deploy list.

Claims

1. A method for deploying content from a source network to a destination network, the method comprising:

receiving (502) an indication to deploy an item;

determining (504) whether a path specifying a source collection of items and a destination collection of items is enabled;

determining (506) whether a job specifying the item to be deployed and the deployment schedule of the item is enabled;

uploading (524) the item in response to the path and job being enabled; and

starting (526) a remote job at the destination network to import the uploaded item.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein uploading (524) the item includes uploading one or more dependencies of the item.

3. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining (510, 512) whether the job is listed in a quick deploy list (214).

4. The method of claim 3 wherein an author listed the job in the list (214) without having to seek permission from an administrator.

5. The method of claim 3 further comprising clearing (534) the list (214) in response to the job being completed.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising determining (520) what data has changed in the item since the item was last deployed.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising updating (538) a table with information indicative of the item'"'"'s version.

8. One or more computer-readable media having stored thereon instructions that when executed by a computer implement the method of claim 1.

9. A system for deploying content, comprising:

a perimeter network (102) having;

a perimeter database (114) to store a perimeter collection of items (312-1) received from another network, and

a web server (110) to provide access to the perimeter collection of items (312-1) from outside the perimeter network; and

an authoring network (104) having;

an authoring database (124) to store an authoring collection of items (302-1) provided by one or more authors, and

a deployment server (128) having a first deployment mode and a second deployment mode, wherein during the first deployment mode the deployment server is to deploy one or more items from the authoring collection of items to the perimeter collection of items according to a predefined schedule, and wherein during the second deployment mode the deployment server is to deploy one or more items selected by an author for deployment using the second deployment mode.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the deployment server (128) includes a list (214) identifying items that are to be deployed using the second deployment mode.

11. The system of claim 10 wherein the deployment server is to determine whether the author has permission to list the item in the list.

12. The system of claim 10 wherein an author listed the item in the list (214) without having to seek permission from an administrator.

13. The system of claim 10 wherein the deployment server uses the second deployment mode more often than the first deployment mode.

14. The system of claim 9 wherein the deployment server (128) also deploys any dependencies of an item when that item is deployed.

15. The system of claim 14 wherein the perimeter database stores the deployed dependencies and the deployed one or more items with references to locations at which the dependencies are stored in the perimeter database.

16. An apparatus for deploying content from a source network to a destination network, the apparatus comprising:

means for receiving (502) an indication to deploy an item from a source collection of items residing in the source network to a destination collection of items residing in the destination network;

means for uploading (524) an item from the source collection; and

means for starting (526) a remote job at the destination network to import the uploaded item.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein means for uploading (524) is further for uploading one or more dependencies of the item.

18. The apparatus of claim 17 further comprising a database in the destination network to store the one or more dependencies and the uploaded item with one or more references to locations at which the dependencies are stored in the database.

19. The apparatus of claim 16 further comprising a first list (214) identifying items that are to be deployed at a time scheduled for the list and a second list (212) containing paths and jobs, wherein items identified in the second list are to be deployed according to schedule specified by one or more jobs.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein an author listed the item in the first list (214) without having to seek permission from an administrator.
