Abstract

Dynamic allocation of communication channels among communication units (CU) in a communications system. Dynamic channel allocation employs a reservation set for reserving channels and an allocation set corresponding to the reservation set for receiving allocated channels. The reservation set and the allocation set are changed dynamically as a function of network parameters to control the dynamic channel operation. Reservation set information is broadcast downlink to multiple users to reserve an allocation set of uplink radio resources for specific ones of the users. The system uses a modification of the packet data channel (PDCH) of a GPRS/EGPRS or EDGE system which employs an Uplink Status Flag (USF) on each PDCH downlink radio block. The downlink reservation set information is commonly received by all users in the group of users. Allocation delay, bandwidth efficiency and other system parameters are optimized.

61. A communications system including multiple access channels, access mode control and a channel allocator for a communication network, said communications system further comprising,

a dynamic allocation unit for controlling allocation of channels to communication units to enable communications units to share channels, said dynamic allocation unit comprising:

means for specifying a reservation set for reserving channel assignments,

means for specifying an allocation set for receiving said channel assignments, and

means for controlling the reservation set and the allocation set based upon system parameters,

said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of radio blocks wherein,

said reservation set includes one or more radio downlink blocks of a PDCH channel, and

said allocation set includes one or more radio blocks of an uplink PDCH channel.

62. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said reservation set includes a single downlink radio block of a PDCH multiframe.

63. The communications system of claim 62 wherein said allocation set includes 11 consecutive uplink blocks of a current multiframe and an uplink block of a next multiframe after said single downlink radio block.

64. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said PDCH channels include multiframes of sequential radio blocks denominated B0, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B10, B11 wherein said reservation set includes downlink B0, B4 and B8 and said allocation set includes a first uplink block group B1, B2, B3, B4, a second uplink block group B5, B6, B7, B8, and a third uplink block group B9, B10, B11 and uplink block B0 of a next multiframe where downlink block B0 allocates for the first block group, where downlink block B4 allocates for the second block group and where block downlink B8 allocates for the third block group.

65. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said PDCH channels include multiframes of sequential radio blocks denominated B0, B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, B6, B7, B8, B9, B10, B11 wherein said reservation set includes downlink blocks B0 and B6 and said allocation set includes a first uplink block group B1, B2, B3, B4, B5 and B6 and a second uplink block group B7, B8, B9, B10, B11 and uplink block B0 of a next multiframe where downlink block B0 allocates for the first block group and where downlink block B6 allocates for the second block group.

66. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with a common control channel and said reservation set and said allocation set are transmitted on said common control channel.

67. The communications system of claim 66 wherein said common control channel is monitored by all of said communication units.

68. The communications system of claim 67 wherein said common control channel includes a broadcast channel.

69. The communications system of claim 67 wherein each one of said communication units monitors the common control channel even when the common control channel includes a different carrier or time slot than assigned for PDCHs for said communications units.

70. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with power control separately on said reservation set.

71. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with power control separately on said reservation set and on training sequence bits independently of power control on data bits in each burst.

72. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with power control separately on said reservation set to target particular communications units.

73. The communications system of claim 72 wherein said communications network operates with power control separately on said reservation set to target one particular communications unit.

74. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with power control separately on said reservation set to target a particular group of communications units in the same zone.

75. The communications system of claim 74 wherein said particular group of communications units is selected by a base station based upon the communications units being in a hearing zone where the reservation set can be decoded without error.

76. The communications system of claim 75 wherein said particular group of communications units is dynamically changed by the base station to maintain the ability of the communications units to decode the reservation set without error.

77. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network uses the timing advance channel to transmit said reservation set.

78. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network uses timing advance control channels to broadcast uplink radio block reservation information for blocks.

79. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of radio blocks wherein, said reservation set includes the B0 block of a downlink PDCH channel, and said allocation set includes one or more blocks of an uplink PDCH channel.

80. The communications system of claim 79 wherein said B0 block contains all the reservation set information for said allocation set.

81. The communications system of claim 79 wherein the coding and power levels on the B0 block are chosen such that a group of communication units can successfully receive and decode the B0 block.

82. The communications system of claim 81 wherein the transmit power levels on blocks other than the B0 block are adjusted to reduce network wide interference.

83. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of radio blocks wherein, said reservation set includes a single block of a downlink PDCH channel, and said allocation set includes one or more blocks of an uplink PDCH channel and wherein said single block is distributed from multiframe to multiframe at pre-determined different locations in order to spread interference across multiple blocks.

84. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of blocks wherein sequential multi-frames are distributed across interfering transmitters to reduce network-wide interference.

85. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of blocks wherein reservation sets employ pseudo dynamic allocation and fixed allocation.

86. The communications system of claim 85 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of blocks wherein an initial uplink resource includes a fixed allocation for a specified set of multi-frames and includes dynamic allocation for subsequent multi-frames.

87. The communications system of claim 86 wherein said specified set of multi-frames includes one multiframe.

88. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of blocks wherein reservation sets employ pseudo dynamic allocation.

89. The communications system of claim 88 wherein said dynamic allocation maintains cavities in allocation frames for initial fixed allocation.

90. The communications system of claim 89 wherein said dynamic allocation distributes said cavities over the multi-frame to reduce initial allocation delay.

91. The communications system of claim 89 wherein said dynamic allocation forces cavities in the multi-frame to provide for any new allocation requests occurring before the end of the multi-frame.

92. The communications system of claim 89 wherein said dynamic allocation uses traffic profiles to determine cavity locations.

93. The communications system of claim 89 wherein said dynamic allocation distributes said cavities over the multi-frame to reduce initial allocation delay.

94. The communications system of claim 89 wherein said dynamic allocation forces a cavity multiframe to be populated with all cavities that are available for use as a launching pad for new communication units with initial allocation delay requirements.

95. The communications system of claim 94 wherein said dynamic allocation reassigns communication units from the cavity multiframe to a different NEW_PDCH using dynamic allocation.

96. The communications system of claim 94 wherein said dynamic allocation reassigns communication units between different types of PDCH'"'"'s to balance network load.

97. The communications system of claim 94 wherein said dynamic allocation reassigns communication units from the cavity multiframe to a different NEW_PDCH using dynamic allocation.

The communications system of claim 94 wherein said dynamic allocation assigns the reservation set to a common control channel including a carrier or time slot different than assigned for a PDCH channel and wherein said communication units monitor said common control channel to obtain an allocation set.

99. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said reservation set occupies a portion of a block of a PDCH channel leaving a vacant portion of the block.

100. The communications system of claim 99 wherein said reservation set occupies a portion of a block of a PDCH channel leaving a vacant portion of said block.

101. The communications system of claim 99 wherein said vacant portion is employed for a data channel.

102. The communications system of claim 99 wherein said vacant portion is employed for measurement control information.

103. The communications system of claim 102 wherein said control information includes the start and end of measurements.

110. The communications system of claim 61 wherein said means for controlling the reservation set and the allocation set operates to improve system performance based upon said system parameters.

111. In a communications system including multiple access channels, access mode control and a channel allocator for a communication network, said communications system operating with the method comprising:

dynamically controlling allocation of channels to communication units to enable communications units to share channels, said dynamic allocation including;

specifying a reservation set for reserving channel assignments, and

specifying an allocation set for receiving said channel assignments controlling the reservation set and the allocation set based upon system parameters, and

said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of radio blocks wherein,

said reservation set includes one or more radio blocks of a downlink PDCH channel, and

said allocation set includes one or more radio blocks of an uplink PDCH channel.

112. The communications system of claim 111 wherein said dynamic allocation includes controlling the reservation set and the allocation set to improve system performance based upon system parameters.

113. The communications system of claim 112 wherein said reservation set includes a single radio block of the PDCH channel.

114. The communications system of claim 113 wherein said allocation set includes consecutive blocks after said single radio block from one or more multiframes.

115. A communications system including multiple access channels, access mode control and a channel allocator for a communication network, said communications system further comprising,

a dynamic allocation unit for controlling allocation of channels to communication units to enable communications units to share channels, said dynamic allocation unit comprising:

means for specifying a reservation set for reserving channel assignments,

means for specifying an allocation set for receiving said channel assignments, and

means for controlling the reservation set and the allocation set based upon system parameters,

said communications network operates with PDCH channels formed of radio bursts wherein,

said reservation set includes one or more radio bursts of a downlink PDCH channel, and

said allocation set includes one or more radio bursts of an uplink PDCH channel.

116. The communications system of claim 115 wherein said PDCH channels include multiframes of sequential radio bursts denominated b0, b1, b2, . . . , b51 wherein said reservation set includes downlink b0, b14, b28 and b42 bursts and said allocation set includes a first uplink burst group b1, b2, . . . , b12 and b14, a second uplink burst group b15, b16, . . . , b26 and b28, a third uplink burst group b29, b30, . . . , b40 and b42 and a fourth uplink burst group b43, b44, . . . , b50 and b0 of a following multiframe where downlink burst b0 allocates for the first uplink burst group, downlink burst b14 allocates for the second uplink burst group, downlink burst b28 allocates for the third uplink burst group and downlink burst b42 allocates for the fourth uplink burst group.
