Abstract

An apparatus includes a shaft, a rod, a portion of which is disposed within the shaft, a first knob and a second knob. The first knob is coupled to the shaft and configured to engage the rod such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first knob is rotated. The second knob is coupled to the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second knob is rotated.

Claims

1. An apparatus, comprising:

a shaft;

a rod, a portion of the rod being disposed within the shaft;

a first knob coupled to the shaft and configured to engage the rod such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first knob is rotated; and

a second knob coupled to the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second knob is rotated.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a distal portion of the rod is configured to removably engage a spinal implant.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

a distal portion of the rod is configured to be removably coupled to a spinal implant; and

a distal portion of the shaft is configured to engage a portion of the spinal implant such that the spinal implant can be moved from a first configuration to a second configuration when the rod translates within the shaft.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein:

a distal portion of the rod is configured to be threadably coupled to a spinal implant; and

a distal portion of the shaft is configured to engage a portion of the spinal implant such that the spinal implant can be decoupled from the rod when the rod rotates within the shaft.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a portion of the second knob is disposed within the first knob.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the first knob and the second knob are concentric about a longitudinal axis of the shaft.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the shaft is configured to be inserted percutaneously into the body of a patient.

8. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising an elongated handle coupled to the shaft, the elongated handle and the shaft collectively configured to allow a user to percutaneously place a distal portion of the shaft in a patient'"'"'s body while manipulating the elongate handle and a proximal portion of the shaft from outside the patient'"'"'s body.

9. An apparatus, comprising:

a shaft having a proximal end portion;

a rod having a proximal end portion, a portion of the rod being disposed within the shaft; and

a control member configured to engage the proximal end portion of the shaft and the proximal end portion of the rod such that actuating a first mode of the control member translates the rod relative to the shaft and actuating a second mode of the control member rotates the rod relative to the shaft.

10. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein

a distal portion of the rod is configured to be removably coupled to a spinal implant;

and

a distal portion of the shaft is configured to removably engage a portion of the spinal implant such that the spinal implant can be moved from a first configuration to a second configuration when the rod translates within the shaft.

11. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein:

a distal portion of the rod is configured to be threadably coupled to a spinal implant; and

a distal portion of the shaft is configured to engage a portion of the spinal implant such that the spinal implant can be decoupled from the rod when the rod rotates within the shaft.

12. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the control member includes a rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft such that the rod translates within the shaft when the rotatable member is rotated.

13. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the control member includes a rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the rotatable member is rotated.

14. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the control member includes a first rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first rotatable member is rotated and a second rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second rotatable member is rotated.

15. The apparatus of claim 9, wherein the control member includes an adapter configured to be coupled to the proximal portion of the rod;

a first rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft and configured to engage a portion of the adapter such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first rotatable member is rotated; and

a second rotatable member coupled to the adapter such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second rotatable member is rotated.

16. A method, comprising:

disposing an expandable member between adjacent spinous processes while the expandable member is in a first configuration;

rotating a first knob of an expansion tool, the expansion tool being removably coupled to the expandable member, such that expandable member moves from a first configuration to a second configuration; and

rotating a second knob of the expansion tool such that the expandable member is removed from the expansion tool.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first configuration is a collapsed configuration and the second configuration is an expanded configuration.

18. The method of claim 16, wherein:

the first knob is coupled to an outer portion of the expansion tool;

the expandable member is removably coupled to an inner portion of the expansion tool; and

the rotating the first knob causes the inner portion of the expansion tool to translate relative to the outer portion of the expansion tool, such that expandable member moves from the first configuration to the second configuration.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein:

the second knob is coupled to an inner portion of the expansion tool;

the expandable member is removably coupled to the inner portion of the expansion tool; and

the rotating the second knob causes the inner portion of the expansion tool to rotate relative to an outer portion of the expansion tool, such that expandable member is removed from the expansion tool.

20. A kit, comprising:

a spinal implant; and

an expansion tool configured to be removably coupled to the spinal implant, the expansion tool including a shaft, a rod disposed within the shaft and a control member configured to engage a portion of the shaft and a portion of the rod such that actuating a first mode of the control member translates the rod relative to the shaft thereby causing the spinal implant to move from a collapsed configuration to an expanded configuration and actuating a second mode of the control member rotates the rod relative to the shaft thereby causing the spinal implant to be removed from the expansion tool.

21. The kit of claim 20, wherein the control member includes a rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft such that the rod translates within the shaft when the rotatable member is rotated.

22. The kit of claim 20, wherein the control member includes a rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the rotatable member is rotated.

23. The kit of claim 20, wherein the control member includes a first rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first rotatable member is rotated and a second rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the rod such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second rotatable member is rotated.

24. The kit of claim 20, wherein the control member includes an adapter configured to be coupled to the proximal portion of the rod;

a first rotatable member coupled to the proximal portion of the shaft and configured to engage a portion of the adapter such that the rod translates within the shaft when the first rotatable member is rotated; and

a second rotatable member coupled to the adapter such that the rod rotates within the shaft when the second rotatable member is rotated.
