Abstract

It is an object of the present invention to provide a display device preventing the external invasion of water and/or oxygen and preventing the deterioration of a luminous element due to these invading substances and to provide a production method including simple production steps for producing the display device. The invention provides a display device having a sealing material on the rim of an exposed interlayer insulator for preventing the invasion of water and/or oxygen from the interlayer insulator. Further, the invention provides a display device having a barrier body on an exposed interlayer insulator for preventing the invasion of water and/or oxygen from the interlayer insulator. Furthermore, the application of droplet discharge technique in production steps for producing the display device can eliminate a photolithography step such as exposing and developing. Thus, a method of producing a display device having an improved yield is provided.

Claims

1. A display device comprising:

a display section comprising a thin film transistor and a luminous element over a first substrate;

a run wire disposed outside the display section over the first substrate;

an interlayer insulator formed over the thin film transistor and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a resin material;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a sealing material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate,

wherein the interlayer insulator is formed at the display section and at the run wire, and

wherein the sealing material is provided outside the interlayer insulator.

5. A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the interlayer insulator is formed between a gate electrode and at least one of source and drain wiring of the thin film transistor.

6. A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the interlayer insulator is formed between an active layer and at least one of source and drain wiring of the thin film transistor.

7. A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a first insulator formed between a gate electrode and at least one of source and drain electrode of the thin film transistor, and a second insulator formed between the at least one of source and drain electrode and the luminous element.

A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a first insulator formed between an active layer and at least one of source and drain electrode of the thin film transistor, and a second insulator formed between the at least one of source and drain electrode and the luminous element.

12. A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the interlayer insulator is formed only at the display section and at the run wire.

13. A display device according to any one of claims 1 to 4, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a video camera, a digital camera, a goggle type display, a navigation system, an audio reproducing device, a notebook personal computer, a television, a game machine, a mobile computer, a mobile phone, a portable game machine, an electronic book, and an image reproducing device.

2. A display device comprising:

a display section comprising a thin film transistor and a luminous element over a first substrate;

a run wire disposed outside the display section over the first substrate;

an interlayer insulator formed over the thin film transistor and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a skeletal structure including links between silicon and oxygen;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a sealing material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate,

wherein the interlayer insulator is formed at the display section and at the run wire, and

wherein the sealing material is provided outside the interlayer insulator.

3. A display device comprising:

a display section and a driver circuit formed over a first substrate, each comprising a thin film transistor;

a run wire disposed outside the display section over the first substrate;

an interlayer insulator formed over the thin film transistor and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a resin material;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a sealing material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

a barrier body covering an end portion of the interlayer insulator,

wherein the interlayer insulator is formed at the display section and at the run wire, and

wherein the sealing material is provided over the driver circuit.

9. A display device according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the barrier body comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of an epoxy resin, an acrylic resin, a phenol resin, a novolac resin, a meramine resin, and an urethane resin.

10. A display device according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the barrier body comprises a resin material containing monomers including fluorine atoms.

11. A display device according to claim 3 or 4, wherein the barrier body comprises a resin material containing monomers including carbon and hydrogen atoms.

4. A display device comprising:

a display section and a driver circuit formed over a first substrate, each comprising a thin film transistor;

a run wire disposed outside the display section over the first substrate;

an interlayer insulator formed over the thin film transistor and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a skeletal structure including links between silicon and oxygen;

a second substrate opposed to the first substrate;

a sealing material interposed between the first substrate and the second substrate; and

a barrier body covering an end portion of the interlayer insulator,

wherein the interlayer insulator is formed at the display section and at the run wire, and

wherein the sealing material is provided over the driver circuit.

14. A method for manufacturing a display device comprising:

forming a display section comprising a thin film transistor and a run wire outside the display section over a first substrate;

forming an interlayer insulator over the display section and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a resin material;

forming a luminous material over the interlayer insulator;

forming a sealing material outside the interlayer insulator over the first substrate; and

bonding a second substrate to the first substrate via the sealing material.

18. A method for manufacturing a display device according to any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein the interlayer insulator is formed between a gate electrode and at least one of source and drain wiring of the thin film transistor.

19. A method for manufacturing a display device according to any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein the interlayer insulator is formed between an active layer and at least one of source and drain wiring of the thin film transistor.

20. A method for manufacturing a display device according to any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a first insulator formed between a gate electrode and at least one of source and drain electrode of the thin film transistor, and a second insulator formed between the at least one of source and drain electrode and the luminous element.

21. A method for manufacturing a display device according to any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a first insulator formed between an active layer and at least one of source and drain electrode of the thin film transistor, and a second insulator formed between the at least one of source and drain electrode and the luminous element.

25. A method for manufacturing a display device according to any one of claims 14 to 17, wherein the display device is incorporated in at least one selected from the group consisting of a video camera, a digital camera, a goggle type display, a navigation system, an audio reproducing device, a notebook personal computer, a television, a game machine, a mobile computer, a mobile phone, a portable game machine, an electronic book, and an image reproducing device.

15. A method for manufacturing a display device comprising:

forming a display section comprising a thin film transistor and a run wire outside the display section over a first substrate;

forming an interlayer insulator over the display section and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a skeletal structure including links between silicon and oxygen;

forming a luminous material over the interlayer insulator;

forming a sealing material outside the interlayer insulator over the first substrate; and

bonding a second substrate to the first substrate via the sealing material.

16. A method for manufacturing a display device comprising:

forming a display section, a driver circuit and a run wire outside the display section over a first substrate, wherein each of the display section and the driver circuit comprises a thin film transistor;

forming an interlayer insulator over the display section, over the driver circuit and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a resin material;

forming a luminous material over the interlayer insulator;

forming a sealing material outside the interlayer insulator over the first substrate; and

bonding a second substrate to the first substrate via the sealing material.

22. A method for manufacturing a display device according to claim 16 or 17, wherein the barrier body comprises at least one selected from the group consisting of an epoxy resin, an acrylic resin, a phenol resin, a novolac resin, a meramine resin, and an urethane resin.

23. A method for manufacturing a display device according to claim 16 or 17, wherein the barrier body comprises a resin material containing monomers including fluorine atoms.

24. A method for manufacturing a display device according to claim 16 or 17, wherein the barrier body comprises a resin material containing monomers including carbon and hydrogen atoms.

17. A method for manufacturing a display device comprising:

forming a display section, a driver circuit and a run wire outside the display section over a first substrate, wherein each of the display section and the driver circuit comprises a thin film transistor;

forming an interlayer insulator over the display section, over the driver circuit and over the run wire, wherein the interlayer insulator comprises a skeletal structure including links between silicon and oxygen;

forming a luminous material over the interlayer insulator;

forming a sealing material outside the interlayer insulator over the first substrate; and

bonding a second substrate to the first substrate via the sealing material.
