Abstract

In one embodiment, an apparatus includes an elongate body and an expandable member coupled to the elongate body. The expandable member is configured to be disposed within an interior of a vertebral body having a first portion that includes cancellous bone and having a second portion that includes sclerotic bone distinct from an endplate of the vertebral body. The expandable member is configured to exert a first pressure on the first portion of the vertebral body and a second pressure different from the first pressure on the second portion of the vertebral body. The second pressure is sufficient to move the second portion of the vertebral body in a direction away from the expandable member when the expandable member is expanded within the interior of the vertebral body.

Claims

1. A apparatus, comprising:

an elongate body; and

an expandable member coupled to the elongate body, the expandable member configured to be disposed within an interior of a vertebral body having a first portion that includes cancellous bone and having a second portion that includes sclerotic bone distinct from an endplate of the vertebral body, the expandable member configured to exert a first pressure on the first portion of the vertebral body and a second pressure different from the first pressure on the second portion of the vertebral body, the second pressure being sufficient to move the second portion of the vertebral body in a direction away from the expandable member when the expandable member is expanded within the interior of the vertebral body.

2. The apparatus of claim 1, further comprising:

a cannula configured to provide percutaneous access to the interior portion of the vertebral body, the elongate body configured to be movably disposed within a lumen of the cannula.

3. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the expandable member includes a balloon formed with a low-compliance material.

4. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the elongate body defines a longitudinal axis, the expandable member is configured to expand a greater distance in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis than in a direction substantially parallel to the axis.

5. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the expandable member is configured to move a cortical end plate of the vertebral body when the expandable member is expanded within the vertebral body.

6. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein a bone density of the first portion of the vertebral body is greater than a bone density of the second portion of the vertebral body.

7. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the expandable member in the expanded configuration has a width dimension perpendicular to a longitudinal axis defined by the elongate body and a length dimension parallel to the longitudinal axis, the width dimension is greater than the length dimension.

8. A apparatus, comprising:

an elongate body; and

an expandable member coupled to the elongate body, the expandable member having a collapsed configuration and an expanded configuration, the expandable member while in the expanded configuration configured to exert a first pressure on a first portion of an interior portion of a vertebral body sufficient to move the first portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body, the expandable member while in the expanded configuration configured to exert a second pressure on a second portion of the vertebral body sufficient to move the second portion of the vertebral body, the first pressure being different from the second pressure,

the first portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body having a bone density, the second portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body having a bone density different than the bone density of the first portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body, at least one of the first portion or the second portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body being disposed a distance from cortical endplates of the vertebral body.

9. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein at least one of the first portion of the vertebral body or the second portion of the vertebral body is at least one of sclerotic bone, cortical bone or recalcitrant bone disposed at a distance from the cortical endplates of the vertebral body.

10. The apparatus of claim 8, further comprising:

a cannula configured to provide percutaneous access to the interior portion of the vertebral body, the elongate body configured to be movably disposed within a lumen of the cannula.

11. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the expandable member includes a balloon formed with a low-compliance material.

12. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the first portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body is cancellous bone, the second portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body is one of sclerotic bone, cortical bone or recalcitrant bone.

13. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the bone density of the first portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body is greater than the bone density of the second portion of the interior portion of the vertebral body.

14. The apparatus of claim 8, wherein the expandable member in the expanded configuration has a width dimension perpendicular to a longitudinal axis defined by the elongate body and a length dimension parallel to the longitudinal axis, the width dimension is greater than the length dimension.

15. A method, comprising:

inserting an expandable member into an interior portion of a vertebral body having a first portion of bone with a density and a second portion of bone with a density less than the density of the first portion of bone, the first portion of bone being disposed apart from cortical endplates of the vertebral body; and

expanding the expandable member while the expandable member is disposed within the interior portion of the vertebral body such that the expandable member exerts pressure on the first portion of bone sufficient to cause the first portion of bone to move,

the first portion of bone within the vertebral body is one of sclerotic bone, cortical bone or recalcitrant bone,

the second portion of bone within the vertebral body is cancellous bone.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the expandable member is a first expandable member, the method further comprising:

prior to inserting the first expandable member, inserting a second expandable member into the interior portion of the vertebral body and expanding the second expandable member within the interior portion of the vertebral body such that the second expandable member exerts pressure on the second portion of bone within the vertebral body, the second expandable member having a set of pre-calibrated parameters different than a set of pre-calibrated parameters associated with the first expandable member.

17. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

inserting a cannula at least partially into the interior portion of the vertebral body prior to inserting the expandable member.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the expandable member is coupled to an elongate body that defines a longitudinal axis, the expandable member is configured to expand a greater distance in a direction substantially perpendicular to the axis than in a direction substantially parallel to the axis.

19. The method of claim 15, wherein the expandable member is formed with a low-compliance material.

20. The method of claim 15, further comprising:

after the expanding, expanding the expandable member such that the expandable member exerts a pressure on a cortical end plate.
