Abstract

Devices for limiting the movement of flowable material introduced into or between tissue layers of the human spine. The devices can include at least one generally elongated member having a pre-deployed configuration for insertion into or between tissue layers of the human spine and a deployed configuration in which the elongated member forms a barrier that limits the movement of flowable material introduced into or between the tissue layers.

Claims

1. A device for limiting or directing the movement of flowable material introduced into or between tissue layers of the human spine, comprising:

at least one generally elongated member having a pre-deployed configuration adapted for insertion into or between tissue layers of the human spine and a second deployed configuration in which the elongated member forms a barrier that limits or directs the movement of flowable material introduced into or between the tissue layers.

2. The device of claim 1 in which the barrier reduces undesired extravasation of the flowable material into surrounding spinal tissue.

3. The device of claim 1 in which the barrier substantially limits the movement of the flowable material only to desired locations within or between the tissue layers.

4. The device of claim 1 in which the elongated member includes at least one passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

5. The device of claim 1 in which the barrier includes a resident volume.

6. The device of claim 5 in which flowable material introduced into the resident volume of the barrier is substantially contained within the resident volume.

7. The device of claim 5 in which flowable material introduced outside of the resident volume of the barrier is substantially prevent from flowing into the resident volume.

8. The device of claim 5 in which the barrier includes at least one passageway into which flowable material can be introduced and said passageway is adapted to direct the flowable material into the resident volume.

9. The device of claim 1 in which the barrier includes a wall having at least one passageway therethrough, said passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

10. The device of claim 9 in which the passageway limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations within or between the tissue layers.

11. The device of claim 9 in which the passageway is formed from grooves located along the elongated member.

12. The device of claim 1 in which the deployed configuration of the elongated member comprises a helical configuration having a plurality of stacked windings.

13. The device of claim 1 in which the elongated member has an inherent tendency to form the barrier.

14. The device of claim 13 in which the elongated member is comprised of a shape memory material.

15. The device of claim 1 in which the pre-deployed configuration is generally linear.

16. A device for limiting or directing the movement of flowable material introduced into a vertebral body of a human vertebra, comprising:

at least one generally elongated member having a pre-deployed configuration adapted for insertion into a vertebral body and a deployed configuration in which the elongated member forms a barrier that limits or directs the movement of flowable material introduced into the vertebral body.

17. The device of claim 16 in which the barrier reduces undesired extravasation of the flowable material into surrounding vertebral tissue.

18. The device of claim 16 in which the barrier substantially limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations within the vertebral body.

19. The device of claim 16 in which the elongated member includes at least one passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

20. The device of claim 16 in which the barrier includes a resident volume.

21. The device of claim 20 in which flowable material introduced into the resident volume of the barrier is substantially contained within the resident volume.

22. The device of claim 20 in which flowable material introduced outside of the resident volume of the barrier is substantially prevent from flowing into the resident volume.

23. The device of claim 20 in which the barrier includes at least one passageway into which flowable material can be introduced and said passageway is adapted to direct the flowable material into the resident volume.

24. The device of claim 16 in which the barrier includes a wall having at least one passageway therethrough, said passage adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

25. The device of claim 24 in which the passageway limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations within the vertebral body.

26. The device of claim 24 in which the passageway is formed from grooves located along the elongated member.

27. The device of claim 16 in which the deployed configuration of the elongated member comprises a helical configuration having a plurality of stacked windings.

28. The device of claim 16 in which the pre-deployed configuration is generally linear.

29. The device of claim 16 in which the elongated member has an inherent tendency to form the barrier.

30. The device of claim 30 in which the elongated member is comprised of a shape memory material.

31. A device for limiting or directing the movement of flowable material introduced between a superior vertebra and an inferior vertebra, comprising:

at least one generally elongated member having a pre-deployed configuration adapted for insertion between a superior vertebra and an inferior vertebra and a deployed configuration in which the elongated member forms a barrier that limits or directs the movement of flowable material introduced between the superior vertebra and the superior vertebra.

32. The device of claim 31 in which the barrier reduces undesired extravasation of the flowable material into surrounding vertebral tissue.

33. The device of claim 31 in which the barrier substantially limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations between the superior and inferior vertebrae.

34. The device of claim 31 in which the elongated member includes at least one passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

35. The device of claim 31 in which the barrier includes a resident volume.

36. The device of claim 35 in which flowable material introduced into the resident volume of the barrier is substantially contained within the resident volume.

37. The device of claim 35 in which flowable material introduced outside of the resident volume of the barrier is substantially prevent from flowing into the resident volume.

38. The device of claim 35 in which the barrier includes at least one passageway into which flowable material can be introduced and said passageway is adapted to direct the flowable material into the resident volume.

39. The device of claim 31 in which the barrier includes a wall having at least one passageway therethrough, said passage adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

40. The device of claim 39 in which the passageway limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations between the superior and inferior vertebrae.

41. The device of claim 39 in which the passageway is formed from grooves located along the elongated member.

42. The device of claim 31 in which the deployed configuration of the elongated member comprises a helical configuration having a plurality of stacked windings.

43. The device of claim 31 in which the elongated member has an inherent tendency to form the barrier.

44. The device of claim 43 in which the elongated member is comprised of a shape memory material.

45. The device of claim 31 in which the pre-deployed configuration is generally linear.

46. A device for limiting or directing the movement of flowable material introduced into a vertebral body of a human vertebra, comprising:

at least one guide member for guiding a generally elongated member into the body of a vertebra, said guide member having a proximal end portion and a distal end portion, said distal end portion adapted for insertion into the vertebral body and defining a shape of a desired barrier therein; and

the elongated member slidably mounted on the guide member for advancing the elongated member distally along the guide member for insertion into the vertebral body, said elongated member substantially conforming to the shape defined by the distal end portion of the guide member to form a barrier that is adapted to limit or direct the movement of flowable material introduced into the vertebral body.

47. The device of claim 46 in which the barrier reduces undesired extravasation of the flowable material into vertebral tissue.

48. The device of claim 46 in which the barrier substantially limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations within the vertebral body.

49. The device of claim 46 in which the elongated member includes at least one passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

50. The device of claim 46 in which the barrier has a resident volume.

51. The device of claim 50 in which flowable material introduced into the resident volume of the barrier is substantially contained within the resident volume.

52. The device of claim 50 in which flowable material introduced outside of the resident volume of the barrier is substantially prevent from flowing into the resident volume.

53. The device of claim 50 in which the barrier includes at least one passageway into which flowable material can be introduced and said passageway is adapted to direct the flowable material into the resident volume.

54. The device of claim 46 in which the barrier includes a wall having at least one passageway therethrough, said passageway adapted for directing the movement of flowable material.

55. The device of claim 54 in which the passageway limits the movement of flowable material only to desired locations within the vertebral body.

56. The device of claim 55 in which the passageway is formed from a groove located along the elongated member.

57. The device of claim 46 in which guide member has a pre-deployed configuration for insertion of the distal end portion between tissue layers and a deployed configuration in which the distal end portion of the guide member, by change of configuration, forms the shape of the desired barrier.

58. The device of claim 57 in which the pre-deployed configuration is generally linear.

59. The device of claim 57 in which the distal end portion of the guide member self-forms into the deployed configuration.

60. The device of claim 59 in which at least the distal end portion of the guide member is comprised of shape memory material.
