Abstract

An ultra wideband receiver combines digital data from multiple channels after signal processing and before decoding and provides a master controller that combines control signals from multiple channels to control the receiver.

Claims

1. A receiver, comprising:

a plurality of channels, each channel having an analog-to-digital converter for in-phase (I) signal and an analog-to-digital converter for quadrature (O) signal;

each channel further having a signal processing block coupled to the I and Q analog-to-digital converters; and

a data combiner coupled to the signal processing blocks of each channel, that combines the I and Q signal separately from each channel.

2. The receiver of claim 1, wherein the signal processing blocks are further coupled to a controller, the controller comprising a combiner that combines incoming correlation values from the plurality of channels.

3. The receiver of claim 2, wherein the combiner also combines correlation phase difference and phase estimate from the plurality of channels.

4. The receiver of claim 3, wherein the combined phase estimate is used for sample frequency offset correction in a phase-locked loop.

5. The receiver of claim 2, wherein the values from the plurality of channels is selectable.

6. The receiver of claim 5, wherein the selection is based on signal-to-noise ratio of the channels.

7. The receiver of claim 2, wherein combiner combines the signals using a weighted average based on the SNR of the signals.

8. The receiver of claim 2, wherein the combiner combines the signals using a simple average.

9. The receiver of claim 2, wherein the combiner combines values from enabled channels of the plurality of channels.

10. The receiver of claim 1, wherein the plurality of channels includes three channels.

11. The receiver of claim 1, further comprising a decoder coupled to the combiner that reverses encoding functions of a transmitter.

12. The receiver of claim 7, wherein the combiner is located aft of the signal processing blocks.

13. The receiver of claim 1, wherein the signal processing block shares a fast Fourier transform with a transmitter.

14. A method, comprising:

for a plurality of channels, converting from analog to digital an in-phase (I) signal and a quadrature (O) signal;

signal processing each converted signal; and

after the processing, combining the I and Q signals separately from each channel.

15. The method of claim 14, further comprising combining incoming correlation values from the plurality of channels.

16. The method of claim 15, further comprising combining correlation correlation phase differences and phase estimate from the plurality of channels.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the combined phase estimate is used for sample frequency offset correction in a phase-locked loop.

18. The method of claim 15, wherein the values from the plurality of channels is selectable.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the selection is based on signal-to-noise ratio of the channels.

20. The method of claim 14, wherein the combining combines the signals using a weighted average based on the SNR of the signals.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein the combiner combines the signals using a simple average.

22. The method of claim 14, wherein the plurality of channels includes three channels.

23. The method of claim 14, further comprising reversing encoding functions of a transmitter.

24. The method of claim 20, wherein the signal processing produces data and control signals, and further comprising combining the control signals to create a set of master control signals for use in the reversing.

25. A system, comprising:

for a plurality of channels, means for converting from analog to digital an in-phase (I) signal and a quadrature (O) signal;

means for signal processing each converted signal; and

coupled to the means for signal processing and operating after the signal processing, means for combining the I and Q signals separately from each channel.
