Abstract

A method and apparatus is provided for communication between a first terminal capable of using both a Circuit Switched (CS) call and an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) session, and a second terminal capable of using the IMS session, in a communication system supporting a Combined CS call and IMS session (CSI service). If the second terminal sends a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) request (INVITE) message to originate a voice service or a multimedia service including the voice service with the first terminal, a CSI Application Server (AS) of an IMS domain managing the first terminal separates a voice service-related component included in the request message from a multimedia service-related component, and generates and sends first and second request messages to the first terminal. Upon receipt of first and second response messages corresponding to the first and second request messages from the first terminal, the CSI AS generates a combined response message and sends the combined response message to the second terminal.

Claims

1. A method for interworking voice and multimedia services between a first terminal capable of using both a Circuit Switched (CS) call and an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) session, and a second terminal capable of using the IMS session, the method comprising the steps of:

receiving, by a control entity of an IMS domain comprising a first registered terminal, a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based request message targeting the first registered terminal, associated with a service originated by a second terminal;

if the request message requests a voice call service and a multimedia service other than the voice call service, separating, by the control entity, a voice call-related component included in the request message from a multimedia service-related component, and generating first and second request messages each including an associated one of the components;

sending the first request message including the voice call-related component from the control entity to the first terminal via a CS domain to which the first terminal is connected;

sending the second request message including the multimedia service-related component from the control entity to the first terminal;

receiving, by the control entity, first and second response messages corresponding to the first and second request messages from the first terminal, and generating a combined response message by combining the first and second response messages;

sending the combined response message to the second terminal in response to the request message; and

performing a voice call through a voice bearer set up between the second terminal and a media gateway (MGW) of the IMS domain and a CS voice bearer set up between the first terminal and the CS domain, and performing the multimedia service through a user bearer set up between the second terminal and the first terminal.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the control entity comprises a CSI application server (AS) for supporting a Combined CS call and IMS session (CSI) service in the IMS domain.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the step of receiving the request message comprises the steps of:

receiving the request message at a Serving-Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) of the IMS domain in which the first terminal is registered via an IMS domain in which the second terminal is registered; and

upon recognizing that the request message requests the voice call service and the multimedia service, forwarding, by the S-CSCF, the request message to the CSI AS.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein in the step of forwarding the request message to the CSI AS, the S-CSCF is configured to consult an initial filter criteria included in a user profile of the first terminal such that an SIP signaling request for the first terminal is forwarded to the CSI AS.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the control entity comprises an S-CSCF that processes an IMS session of the first terminal in the IMS domain.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein in the step of separating the request message into the first request message and the second request message, the S-CSCF is configured to consult capability information indicating that the first terminal supports a CSI service.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of sending the first request message to the first terminal comprises the steps of:

translating an SIP Universal Resource Identifier (URI) indicative of a destination address of the request message, corresponding to the first terminal, into a Tel URI form indicating a phone number of the first terminal; and

inserting the Tel URI in the first request message.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the step of sending the first request message to the first terminal comprises at least one of the steps of:

adding information indicting delivery of the CS domain, to a destination address of the first request message in the Tel URI form;

adding a “

header indicating delivery to the CS domain, to the first request message; and

applying to the first request message an initial filter criteria constructed such that an S-CSCF of the IMS domain in which the first terminal is registered forwards the first request message having the destination address in the Tel URI form to the CS domain.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of sending the first request message comprises the steps of:

sending the first request message from the control entity to a Media Gateway Control Function (MGCF) of the IMS domain;

translating, by the MGCF of the IMS domain, the first request message into an ISDN User'"'"'s Part (ISUP) Initial Address Message (IAM), and delivering the ISUP IAM to the CS domain; and

sending, by the CS domain, a System Signaling No.7 (SS7) protocol-based SETUP message corresponding to the ISUP LAM to the first terminal.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising the steps of:

if the request message requests only the voice call service, sending, by the control entity, the request message to the first terminal via the CS domain;

receiving, by the control entity, a response message corresponding to the request message from the first terminal via the CS domain;

sending the response message to the second terminal in response to the request message; and

performing a voice call through a voice bearer set up between the second terminal and the MGW of the IMS domain and a CS voice bearer set up between the first terminal and the CS domain.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein the step of performing the voice call and performing the multimedia service are performed essentially simultaneously.

11. An apparatus for interworking voice and multimedia services, comprising:

a first terminal configured to use a Circuit Switched (CS) call for a voice call, and use both the CS call and an Internet Protocol Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) session for a Packet Switched (PS) service;

a second terminal configured to use the IMS session for both the voice call and the PS service; and

a control entity of an IMS domain managing the first terminal, for receiving a Session Initiation Protocol (SIP)-based request message targeting the first terminal, generated by the second terminal, generating first and second request messages including a voice call-related component and a multimedia service-related component of the request message, respectively, sending the first request message to the first terminal via a CS domain to which the first terminal is connected, and sending the second request message to the first terminal.

wherein the control entity is configured to receive first and second response messages corresponding to the first and second request messages from the first terminal, generate a combined response message by combining the first and second response messages, and send the combined response message to the second terminal in response to the request message, and,

a voice call is performed through a voice bearer set up between the second terminal and a media gateway (MGW) of the IMS domain and a CS voice bearer set up between the first terminal and the CS domain, and the multimedia service is performed through a user bearer set up between the second terminal and the first terminal.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control entity comprises a CSI application server (AS) supporting a Combined CS call and IMS session (CSI) service in the IMS domain.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the CSI AS is configured to receive the request message at a Serving-Call Session Control Function (S-CSCF) of the IMS domain in which the first terminal is registered via an IMS domain in which the second terminal is registered;

and

wherein, upon recognizing that the request message requests the voice call service and the multimedia service, the request message is forwarded to the CSI AS by the S-CSCF.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, wherein, to send the request message to the CSI AS, the S-CSCF is configured to consult an initial filter criteria included in a user profile of the first terminal such that an SIP signaling request for the first terminal is forwarded to the CSI AS.

16. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control entity comprises an S-CSCF that processes an IMS session of the first terminal in the IMS domain.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein, to separate the request message into the first request message and the second request message, the S-CSCF is configured to consult capability information indicating that the first terminal supports a CSI service.

The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control entity is configured to translate an SIP Universal Resource Identifier (URI) indicative of a destination address of the request message, corresponding to the first terminal, into a Tel URI form indicating a phone number of the first terminal, and insert the Tel URI in the first request message.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the control entity is configured to perform at least one of:

add information indicting delivery of the CS domain, to a destination address of the first request message in the Tel URI form;

add a “

header indicating delivery to the CS domain, to the first request message; and

apply to the first request message an initial filter criteria constructed such that an S-CSCF of the IMS domain in which the first terminal is registered forwards the first request message having the destination address in the Tel URI form to the CS domain.

20. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising:

a Media Gateway Control Function (MGCF) of the IMS domain, for receiving the first request message from the control entity, translating the first request message into an ISDN User'"'"'s Part (ISUP) Initial Address Message (IAM), and delivering the ISUP IAM to the CS domain; and

wherein the CS domain is configured to send a System Signaling No.7 (SS7) protocol-based SETUP message corresponding to the ISUP IAM to the first terminal.

21. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the control entity is configured to:

if the request message requests only the voice call service, send the request message to the first terminal via the CS domain;

upon receipt of a response message corresponding to the request message from the first terminal via the CS domain, send the response message to the second terminal in response to the request message; and

perform a voice call through a voice bearer set up between the second terminal and the MGW of the IMS domain and a CS voice bearer set up between the first terminal and the CS domain, wherein both of the bearers are set up through an operation of the control entity.

24. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein the voice call and the multimedia service are performed essentially simultaneously.
