Abstract

A power transmission belt having a body with an inside, an outside, and laterally oppositely facing side surfaces. The body has at least one surface that engages a pulley to frictionally transmit forces between the power transmission belt and pulley. The body includes rubber defining at least a part of the at least one surface. The rubber is a composition made up of a blend of at least: a) 100 parts by weight of an ethylene/α-olefin elastomer; b) 10 to 25 parts by weight of a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2; and c) 60 to 110 parts by weight of an inorganic filler.

Claims

1. A power transmission belt comprising:

a body with an inside and outside and laterally oppositely facing side surfaces,

the body having at least one surface that engages a pulley to frictionally transmit forces between the power transmission belt and pulley,

the body comprising rubber defining at least a part of the at least one surface that is a composition comprising a blend of;

a) 100 parts by weight of an ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer;

b) 10 to 25 parts by weight of a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2; and

c) 60 to 110 parts by weight of an inorganic filler.

2. The power transmission belt according to claim 1 wherein the inorganic filler comprises carbon black.

3. The power transmission belt according to claim 1 wherein the inorganic filler comprises carbon black and at least one of metal carbonate and metal silicate.

4. The power transmission belt according to claim 2 wherein the carbon black has a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of from 65 to 125 m²/g and dibutyl phthalate oil absorption of from 90 to 125 cm³/100 g.

5. The power transmission belt according to claim 3 wherein the carbon black has a nitrogen adsorption specific surface area of from 65 to 125 m²/g and dibutyl phthalate oil absorption of from 90 to 125 cm³/100 g.

6. The power transmission belt according to claim 1 wherein the rubber composition comprises a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2.

7. The power transmission belt according to claim 2 wherein the rubber composition comprises a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2.

8. The power transmission belt according to claim 3 wherein the rubber composition comprises a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2.

9. The power transmission belt according to claim 4 wherein the rubber composition comprises a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2.

10. The power transmission belt according to claim 5 wherein the rubber composition comprises a plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2.

11. The power transmission belt according to claim 6, wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2 comprises a petroleum plasticizer.

12. The power transmission belt according to claim 7, wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2 comprises a petroleum plasticizer.

13. The power transmission belt according to claim 8, wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2 comprises a petroleum plasticizer.

14. The power transmission belt according to claim 9, wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2 comprises a petroleum plasticizer.

15. The power transmission belt according to claim 10, wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 6.0 to 8.1(cal/cm³)^1/2 comprises a petroleum plasticizer.

16. The power transmission belt according to claim 11, wherein the petroleum plasticizer comprises at least one of a paraffin plasticizer and a naphthene plasticizer.

17. The power transmission belt according to claim 12, wherein the petroleum plasticizer comprises at least one of a paraffin plasticizer and a naphthene plasticizer.

18. The power transmission belt according to claim 13, wherein the petroleum plasticizer comprises at least one of a paraffin plasticizer and a naphthene plasticizer.

19. The power transmission belt according to claim 14, wherein the petroleum plasticizer comprises at least one of a paraffin plasticizer and a naphthene plasticizer.

20. The power transmission belt according to claim 15, wherein the petroleum plasticizer comprises at least one of a paraffin plasticizer and a naphthene plasticizer.

21. The power transmission belt according to claim 16 wherein the rubber composition comprises a blend of 100 parts by weight of the ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer and from 3 to 20 parts by weight of the at least one of the paraffin plasticizer and naphthene plasticizer.

22. The power transmission belt according to claim 17 wherein the rubber composition comprises a blend of 100 parts by weight of the ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer and from 3 to 20 parts by weight of the at least one of the paraffin plasticizer and naphthene plasticizer.

23. The power transmission belt according to claim 18 wherein the rubber composition comprises a blend of 100 parts by weight of the ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer and from 3 to 20 parts by weight of the at least one of the paraffin plasticizer and naphthene plasticizer.

24. The power transmission belt according to claim 19 wherein the rubber composition comprises a blend of 100 parts by weight of the ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer and from 3 to 20 parts by weight of the at least one of the paraffin plasticizer and naphthene plasticizer.

25. The power transmission belt according to claim 20 wherein the rubber composition comprises a blend of 100 parts by weight of the ethylene/α

-olefin elastomer and from 3 to 20 parts by weight of the at least one of the paraffin plasticizer and naphthene plasticizer.

26. The power transmission belt according to claim 1 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

27. The power transmission belt according to claim 2 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

28. The power transmission belt according to claim 3 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

29. The power transmission belt according to claim 4 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

30. The power transmission belt according to claim 5 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

31. The power transmission belt according to claim 6 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

32. The power transmission belt according to claim 11 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

33. The power transmission belt according to claim 16 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

34. The power transmission belt according to claim 21 wherein the plasticizer having a solubility parameter of from 8.3 to 10.7 (cal/cm³)^1/2 is an ether ester plasticizer.

35. The power transmission belt according to claim 1 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

36. The power transmission belt according to claim 2 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

37. The power transmission belt according to claim 3 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

38. The power transmission belt according to claim 4 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

39. The power transmission belt according to claim 5 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

40. The power transmission belt according to claim 6 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

41. The power transmission belt according to claim 11 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.

42. The power transmission belt according to claim 16 wherein a friction coefficient for the at least one surface is from 0.3 to 0.6.
