Abstract

A method for providing local access to managed content is disclosed. The method comprises receiving from a remote host a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content and obtaining information required to respond to the request. The method further comprises providing in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system associated with the remote host.

Claims

1. A method for providing local access to managed content comprising:

receiving from a remote host a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content;

obtaining information required to respond to the request; and

providing in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system associated with the remote host.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein the operation is reading content.

3. A method as in claim 1, wherein the operation is writing content.

4. A method as in claim 1, wherein providing in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system includes providing one or more content locators, each associated with a local content system, the one or more content locators including a preferred content locator associated with a selected local content system that has been selected as a preferred local content system for servicing the request.

5. A method as in claim 4, wherein the one or more content locators comprise a prioritized list of content locators.

6. A method as in claim 1, wherein the information required to respond to the request is determined at least in part by associating with the request one or more data objects comprising the set of managed content.

7. A method as in claim 1, wherein the information required to respond to the request is determined at least in part by associating one or more data objects with the request by querying a metadata database.

8. A method as in claim 1, wherein the information required to respond to the request to perform the operation is obtained from a content system.

9. A method as in claim 1, wherein the content locator is provided to the remote system.

10. A method as in claim 1, wherein the content locator is based at least in part on at least part of the information required to respond to the request to perform the operation.

11. A method as in claim 1, wherein the content locator includes a URL.

12. A method as in claim 1, wherein the content locator includes executable or self-executing code.

13. A method as in claim 1, further comprising determining whether the content with which the request is associated is currently available at the local content system.

14. A method as in claim 1, wherein in the event that the requested content is not available at the local content system, the local content system retrieves the requested content from a content server.

15. A method as in claim 1, wherein in the event that the requested content is not available at the local content system, the local content system retrieves the requested content from a content server based on information in the content locator.

16. A method for providing local access to managed content comprising:

sending to a content management system a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with the content management system;

receiving from the content management system a content locator; and

using the content locator to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system.

17. A system for providing direct access to distributed managed content comprising:

a processor configured to;

receive from a remote host a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content;

obtain information required to respond to the request; and

provide in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system associated with the remote host;

and a memory coupled to the processor configured to provide instructions to the processor.

18. A system as in claim 17, wherein the operation is reading content.

19. A system as in claim 17, wherein the operation is writing content.

20. A computer program product for providing local access to managed content, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:

receiving from a remote host a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content;

obtaining information required to respond to the request; and

providing in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system associated with the remote host.

21. A computer program product as recited in claim 20, wherein the operation is reading content.

22. A computer program product as recited in claim 20, wherein the operation is writing content.
