1. A method of projecting light from a coherent light source onto a one-dimensional spatial light modulator as a line of light having a length and a width, the method comprising the steps of:

  • dividing the light from the light source in a manner such that the divided light is effectively formed into a rectangular, two-dimensional array of N1×

    N2 mutually incoherent light-sources;

    projecting light from the mutually incoherent light-sources along a first axis onto the spatial light modulator to form the length of the line of light;

    projecting light from the mutually incoherent light-sources along a second, orthogonal axis, onto the spatial light modulator to form the width of the line of light; and

    wherein the light-dividing step is accomplished without using any moving components.
