Abstract

Prosthetic valves and their component parts are described, as are prosthetic valve delivery devices and methods for their use. The prosthetic valves are particularly adapted for use in percutaneous aortic valve replacement procedures. The delivery devices are particularly adapted for use in minimally invasive surgical procedures.

Claims

1. A medical device, comprising:

a support structure expandable from a contracted state to an expanded state, the support structure being configured for implantation within a fluid-carrying lumen of a subject; and

a sealing member located on the support structure, the sealing member being configured to at least partially seal the region between the support structure and the fluid-carrying lumen.

2. The medical device of claim 1, further comprising a valvular body located within the support structure.

3. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the support structure comprises an inner lumen configured to allow fluid to flow therethrough when in the expanded state, the support structure being configured to support the walls of a body lumen.

4. The medical device of claim 3, wherein the support structure has a first diameter and a first length in the expanded state and a second diameter and a second length in the contracted state, the first diameter being greater than the second diameter and the first length being less than the second length.

5. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the support structure is generally cylindrical when in the expanded state.

6. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member is a flared edge of the support structure.

7. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member is a swellable material configured to swell.

8. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member comprises a membrane and a compressible member within the membrane.

9. The medical device of claim 8, wherein the sealing member comprises a plurality of compressible members.

10. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member comprises a plurality of compressible members.

11. The medical device of claim 10, wherein each compressible member is a compressible flap-like member.

12. The medical device of claim 10, wherein each compressible member is a coil-like member.

13. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member is flap-like.

14. The medical device of claim 13, wherein the flap-like sealing member has a first end coupled with the support structure and a second end configured to deflect from the support structure.

15. The medical device of claim 14, wherein the sealing member is located around the entire perimeter of the support structure.

16. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the sealing member is configured as a flexible portion of the support structure.

17. The medical device of claim 16, wherein the sealing member comprises at least one deflectable member configured to conform to the shape of at least a portion of the fluid-carrying lumen.

18. The medical device of claim 16, wherein the sealing member comprises a plurality of deflectable members.

19. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the fluid-carrying lumen is the aorta.

20. The medical device of claim 19, wherein the fluid-carrying lumen is the descending aorta.

21. The medical device of claim 19, wherein the fluid-carrying lumen is the ascending aorta.

22. The medical device of claim 19, wherein the fluid-carrying lumen is a ventricular bypass lumen.

23. The medical device of claim 1, wherein the fluid-carrying lumen carries blood and the sealing member is configured to seal during diastolic conditions and configured to allow blood to flow past the sealing member during systolic conditions.
