Abstract

A method, network switch, and system for communication within a wireless network is disclosed. An association request from a wireless station is received at an access point. A determination is made whether a reservation threshold for a pre-determined number of wireless stations for the access point has been met. If the reservation threshold has not been met, the wireless station is associated with the access point. If the reservation threshold has been met, and the wireless station is not already on a call through another access point, the association of the wireless station with the access point is rejected.

Claims

1. A method of communication within a wireless network, comprising:

receiving an association request from a wireless station at an access point;

determining whether a reservation threshold for a pre-determined number of wireless stations for the access point has been met;

if the reservation threshold has not been met, associating the wireless station with the access point; and

if the reservation threshold has been met and the wireless station is not already on a call through another access point, rejecting the association of the wireless station with the access point.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein if the reservation threshold has been met and the wireless station is already on a call through another access point, further comprising, allowing the association between the wireless station and the access point.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein determining whether to allow the association of the wireless station that is already on a call through another access point further comprises determining whether a call capacity threshold corresponding to a pre-determined amount of voice-traffic has been met.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein if the call capacity threshold is met, further comprising rejecting the requested association between the wireless station and the access point.

5. The method of claim 4, wherein if the call capacity threshold is not met, further comprising allowing the requested association between the wireless station and the access point.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein associating the wireless station with the access point further comprises associating a VLAN identifier with the wireless station.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein if the associated wireless station attempts to make a call, determining whether a call capacity threshold corresponding to a pre-determined amount of voice-traffic has been met, and if not, allowing the call.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein if the call capacity threshold has been met, and a session initiation protocol (SIP) signal is being utilized, rejecting the call with a service unavailable signal, and if a SIP signal is not being utilized, rejecting the call with a disconnection signal.

9. The method of claim 2, wherein if the associated wireless station attempts to reserve bandwidth, allowing the wireless station to reserve bandwidth if the associated station is already on a call, a traffic specification request and a traffic classification request are determined to be valid, and a session description protocol (SDP) is determined to be properly matched.

10. A network switch comprising:

a memory; and

processing logic coupled to the memory, the processing logic under the control of a program to perform operations including;

based upon a received association request from a wireless station received at an access point, determining whether a reservation threshold for a pre-determined number of wireless stations for the access point has been met;

if the reservation threshold has not been met, associating the wireless station with the access point; and

if the reservation threshold has been met and the wireless station is not already on a call through another access point, rejecting the association of the wireless station with the access point.

The network switch of claim 10, wherein if the reservation threshold has been met and the wireless station is already on a call through another access point, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including allowing the association between the wireless station and the access point.

The network switch of claim 11, wherein determining whether to allow the association of the wireless station that is already on a call through another access point, further comprises, the processing logic to perform an operation including determining whether a call capacity threshold corresponding to a pre-determined amount of voice-traffic has been met.

13. The network switch of claim 12, wherein if the call capacity threshold is met, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including rejecting the requested association between the wireless station and the access point.

14. The network switch of claim 13, wherein if the call capacity threshold is not met, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including allowing the requested association between the wireless station and the access point.

15. The network switch of claim 10 wherein associating the wireless station with the access point further comprises the processing logic to perform an operation including associating a VLAN identifier with the wireless station in both an association listing specific to the network switch and in a bridge listing resident upon the network switch and a plurality of other network switches of the wireless network.

The network switch of claim 11, wherein if the associated wireless station attempts to make a call, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including determining whether a call capacity threshold corresponding to a pre-determined amount of voice-traffic has been met, and if not, allowing the call.

The network switch of claim 16, wherein if the call capacity threshold has been met, and a session initiation protocol (SIP) signal is being utilized, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including rejecting the call with a service unavailable signal, and if a SIP signal is not being utilized, rejecting the call with a disconnection signal.

18. The network switch of claim 11, wherein if the associated wireless station attempts to reserve bandwidth, further comprising, the processing logic to perform an operation including allowing the wireless station to reserve bandwidth if the associated station is already on a call, a traffic specification request and a traffic classification request are determined to be valid, and a session description protocol (SDP) is determined to be properly matched.

19. A method of communication within a wireless network, comprising:

receiving a request to reserve an amount of bandwidth in a call from an associated wireless station;

determining if the wireless station was previously on a call; and

if the wireless station is determined not to have been previously on a call,

rejecting the call.

20. The method of claim 19, further comprising:

determining if a traffic specification request is valid, and if not, rejecting the call.

21. The method of claim 20, further comprising:

determining if a traffic classification request is valid, and if not, rejecting the call.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising:

determining if a session description protocol (SDP) is determined to be properly matched, and if not, rejecting the call.

23. The method of claim 22, wherein if the traffic specification request and the traffic classification request are determined to be valid and the SDP is determined to be properly matched, further comprising proceeding with the call with the requested bandwidth.
