Abstract

A hyper throughput packet transmission method for a wireless local area network operating in burst and protection mode is provided. A first CTS frame is sent, comprising an NAV to reserve the medium for a duration. Upon completion of the first CTS frame delivery, a plurality of data frames are delivered to the destination. Upon completion of the data frame delivery, a second CTS frame is sent to reserve the medium for another duration, such that the previous steps form a loop. Delivery of the data frames comprises, a data frame is delivered from the source to the destination, and after the data frame delivered, waiting for an ACK frame from the destination within one SIFS interval. Upon receipt of the ACK frame, if the following data frame is ready, the previous steps loop, otherwise the delivery is complete.

Claims

1. A packet transmission method for a wireless local area network wherein a source transmits data to a destination, comprising:

initializing the transmission by the source delivering a first clear-to-send (CTS) frame;

upon completion of the first CTS frame delivery, holding one SIFS interval and delivering a plurality of data frames to the destination;

wherein;

the data frames delivery comprises;

the source delivering one data frame to the destination;

after the one data frame is delivered, receiving an ACK frame from the destination within one SIFS interval; and

upon receipt of the ACK frame, if a successive data frame is ready, holding one SIFS interval and repeat the data frames delivery.

2. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

upon completion of the data frames delivery, the source holding one SIFS interval and delivering a second CTS frame, thus the transmission repeats; and

the first CTS frame comprises a network allocation vector (NAV) reserving the medium for a duration beginning at the falling edge of the first CTS frame and ending at the falling edge of the second CTS frame.

3. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

each ACK frame is CCK modulated, comprising an NAV protecting one ACK frame, two SIFS intervals and one data frame;

the first CTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration to protect two data frames, two ACK frames and four SIFS intervals; and

each data frame comprises an NAV protecting one data frame, two ACK frames and three SIFS intervals.

4. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein if the ACK frame is not received within one SIFS interval, the data frame is deemed lost and retransmission is performed.

5. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the plurality of data frames consists of two data frames.

6. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the CTS frame is CCK modulated, and the data frames are OFDM modulated.

7. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein:

the source is an AP supporting both 802.11b and 802.11g; and

the destination is a STA supporting only 802.11g.

8. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 1, wherein the source is a STA supporting only 802.11g;

and

the destination is an AP supporting both 802.11b and 802.11g.

9. A packet transmission method for a wireless local area network wherein a source transmits data to a destination, comprising:

initializing the transmission by delivering a first request-to-send (RTS) frame;

receiving a CTS frame from the destination within one SIFS interval after the delivery of the RTS frame;

upon receipt of the CTS frame, holding one SIFS interval and delivering a plurality of data frames to the destination;

wherein;

the data frames delivery consists of;

the source delivering a data frame to the destination;

receiving an ACK frame from the destination within one SIFS interval after the data frame is delivered; and

upon receipt of the ACK frame, if a successive data frame is ready, holding one SIFS interval and repeating the data frames delivery.

10. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 9, wherein upon completion of the data frames delivery, the source holding one SIFS interval and delivering a second RTS frame, thus the transmission repeats;

and

the first RTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration beginning at the falling edge of the first RTS frame and ending at the falling edge of the second RTS frame.

11. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the first RTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration to protect one CTS frame, two data frames, two ACK frames and five SIFS intervals;

each data frame comprises an NAV protecting one data frame, two ACK frames and three SIFS intervals; and

each ACK frame is CCK modulated, comprising an NAV protecting one ACK frame, two SIFS intervals and one data frame.

12. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 9, wherein if the ACK frame is not received within one SIFS interval, the data frame is deemed lost and retransmission is performed.

13. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the RTS and CTS frame are CCK modulated;

and

the data frames are OFDM modulated.

14. The packet transmission method as claimed in claim 9, wherein the source is an STA supporting 802.11g;

and

the destination is an AP supporting 802.11b and 802.11g.

15. A wireless local area network system, comprising:

means for sending a plurality of data frames; and

means for receiving the plurality of data frames;

wherein the means for sending initializes the transmission by delivering a first clear-to-send (CTS) frame; and

after the first CTS frame delivery, the means for sending holds one SIFS interval and delivers a plurality of data frames to the means for receiving, comprising;

delivering one data frame to the means for receiving;

receiving an ACK frame from the means for receiving within one SIFS interval; and

upon receipt of the ACK frame, if a successive data frame is ready, the means for sending holds one SIFS interval and repeats the data frames delivery.

16. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 15, wherein upon completion of the data frames delivery, the means for delivering data frames holds one SIFS interval and delivers a second CTS frame, thus the transmission repeats;

and

the first CTS frame comprises a network allocation vector (NAV) reserving the medium for a duration beginning at the falling edge of the first CTS frame and ending at the falling edge of the second CTS frame.

17. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 15, wherein:

the first CTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration to protect two data frames, two ACK frames and four SIFS intervals;

each data frame comprises an NAV protecting one data frame, two ACK frames and three SIFS intervals; and

each ACK frame is CCK modulated, comprising an NAV protecting one ACK frame, two SIFS intervals and one data frame.

18. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 15, further comprising a means for handling retransmission operative when the ACK frame is not received within one SIFS interval.

19. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the plurality of data frames consists of two data frames.

20. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 15, wherein the CTS frame is CCK modulated;

and the data frames are OFDM modulated.

21. A wireless local area network system, comprising:

means for sending a plurality of data frames; and

means for receiving the plurality of data frames;

wherein the means for sending initializes the transmission by delivering a first request-to-send (RTS) frame;

the means for receiving sends a CTS frame within one SIFS interval after receiving the RTS frame;

the means for sending holds one SIFS interval upon receipt of the CTS frame, and delivers a plurality of data frames to the means for receiving, consisting of;

delivering a data frame to the means for receiving;

receiving an ACK frame from the means for receiving within one SIFS interval after the data frame is delivered; and

upon receipt of the ACK frame, if a successive data frame is ready, holding one SIFS interval and repeating the data frames delivery.

22. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 21, wherein:

upon completion of the data frames delivery, the means for delivering data frames holds one SIFS interval and delivers a second RTS frame, thus the transmission repeats; and

the first RTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration beginning at the falling edge of the first RTS frame and ending at the falling edge of the second RTS frame.

23. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 21, wherein:

the first RTS frame comprises an NAV reserving the medium for a duration to protect one CTS frame, two data frames, two ACK frames and five SIFS intervals;

each data frame comprises an NAV protecting one data frame, two ACK frames and three SIFS intervals; and

each ACK frame is CCK modulated, comprising an NAV protecting one ACK frame, two SIFS intervals and one data frame.

24. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 21, further comprising a means for handling retransmission operative when the ACK frame is not received within one SIFS interval.

25. The wireless local area network system as claimed in claim 21, wherein:

the RTS and CTS frame are CCK modulated; and

the data frames are OFDM modulated.
