Abstract

Service resource items (49) for use in call setup in a telephone system are held on servers (58) that are connected to a computer network which is logically distinct from the telephone system infrastructure, this computer network may, for example, make use of the Internet. Each service resource item (49) is locatable on the network at a corresponding URI and is associated with a particular telephone number. A mapping is provided between telephone numbers and the URIs of associated service resource items. When it is desired to access a service resource item (49) associated with a particular telephone number, this mapping is used to retrieve the corresponding URI (step 55) which is then used to access the desired service resource item (56, 57, 59).

17. A method of accessing an information resource having an associated URI for locating it on a network, said method comprising:

receiving a resource code and using a first portion of the code to look up in a database a host component of said URI;

forming said URI by combining the looked-up host component with a path component comprising a second portion of the resource code;

using the formed URI to access said information resource over a network.

Apparatus according to claim 17, wherein the database look-up arrangement is arranged to use the first portion of the code to look up the host component of said URI by forming a domain name from the first portion of the code by a process including parsing the first portion of code into at least a part of said domain name, the database look-up arrangement being arranged to supply the domain name so formed to a DNS-type database system to retrieve the host component of said URI.

25. A method of providing a user with information from an information resource having an associated URI for locating it on a network, said method comprising:

inputting a resource code via a user device;

using a first portion of the input resource code to look up in a database a host component of said URI;

forming said URI by combining the looked-up host component with a path component comprising a second portion of the input resource code;

using the formed URI to access said information resource over a network; and

outputting information from the accessed information resource via the user device.

33. Apparatus for providing a user with information from an information resource having an associated URI for locating it on a network, the apparatus comprising:

an input interface for receiving a resource code;

a database look-up arrangement arranged to use a first portion of the resource code to look up in a database a host component of said URI;

a processing arrangement arranged to form said URI by combining the looked-up host component with a path component comprising a second portion of the resource code;

an information-retrieval arrangement arranged to use the formed URI to access said information resource over a network and retrieve information; and

an output interface for outputting information retrieved from the accessed information resource.
