Abstract

The present invention provides a method and device for restoring individual patient joint kinematics using minimally invasive surgical procedures. The instrumentation of the invention sculpts the articular surface of a first bone that normally articulates in a predetermined manner with a second bone. The instrumentation includes a bone sculpting tool and a mount for attaching the tool to the second bone. The implant system is comprised of implants that provide intraoperative surgical options for articular constraint and facilitate proper alignment and orientation of the joint to restore kinematics as defined by the individual patient anatomy.

Claims

1. A bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis comprising a single component for resurfacing the patellofemoral groove and the lateral condyle of a femur, the single component having an inner surface adapted to be secured to the femur and an outer surface adapted to contact a second bone implant.

2. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 1 wherein the single component for resurfacing the patellofemoral groove and the lateral condyle is integrally formed.

3. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 1 further comprising a fin longitudinally disposed along an axis of said single, integrally formed component for driving the single component into a first bone.

4. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 1 further comprising a fin for driving the single component into a first bone.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said femoral and tibial implants are structured to avoid disrupting the anterior and posterior cruciate ligaments.

5. A bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis comprising a single component for resurfacing the patellofemoral groove and the medial condyle of a femur, the single component having an inner surface adapted to be secured to the femur and an outer surface adapted to contact a second bone implant.

6. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 5 wherein the single component for resurfacing the patellofemoral groove and the medial condyle is integrally formed.

7. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 5 further comprising a fin longitudinally disposed along an axis of said single, integrally formed component for driving the single component into a first bone.

8. The bicompartmental femoral knee prosthesis of claim 5 further comprising a fin for driving the single component into a first bone.

9. An apparatus for partial replacement of the distal surface of a femur and partial replacement of the proximal surface of a tibia, the femur articulating in a predetermined manner with the tibia, the apparatus comprising:

a femoral implant including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing the trochlea and one condyle of the distal femur, said femoral implant having an inner surface adapted to be secured to the femur and an outer surface; and

a tibial implant including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing one plateau of the proximal tibia, said tibial implant being adjacent to said femoral implant;

wherein the outer surface of said femoral implant contacts said tibial implant and further wherein the resulting configuration of the femoral implant and the tibial implant articulate in a predetermined manner to restore proper kinematics.

11. An apparatus for partial replacement of the distal surface of a femur and partial replacement of the proximal surface of a tibia, the femur articulating in a predetermined manner with the tibia, the apparatus comprising:

a femoral implant including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing the trochlea and one condyle of the distal femur, said femoral implant having an inner surface adapted to be secured to the femur and an outer surface; and

a tibial implant including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing one plateau of the proximal tibia, said tibial implant being structured to be placed adjacent to said femoral implant;

wherein the outer surface of said femoral implant contacts said tibial implant and further wherein the resulting configuration of the femoral implant and the tibial implant articulate in a predetermined manner to restore proper kinematics.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the femoral implant is structured to replace the trochlea and the lateral condyle.

13. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the femoral implant is structured to replace the trochlea and the medial condyle.

14. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the tibial implant is of unitary construction.

15. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the tibial implant further comprises a fixed bearing attachment and a bearing attached thereto.

16. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the tibial implant further comprises a mobile bearing attachment and a bearing attached thereto.

17. A system for partial replacement of the distal surface of a femur and partial replacement of the proximal surface of a tibia, the femur articulating in a predetermined manner with the tibia, the system comprising:

a set of femoral implants of various sizes, each of said femoral implants including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing the trochlea and one condyle of the distal femur, and having an inner surface adapted to be secured to the femur and an outer surface; and

a set of tibial implants of various sizes, each of said tibial implants including a bearing surface for mimicking and replacing one plateau of the proximal tibia and being structured to be placed adjacent to said femoral implant;

wherein the outer surface of said femoral implant contacts said tibial implant and further wherein the resulting configuration of the femoral implant and the tibial implant articulate in a predetermined manner to restore proper kinematics.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein the set of femoral implants are structured to replace the trochlea and the lateral condyle.

19. The system of claim 17 wherein the set of femoral implants are structured to replace the trochlea and the medial condyle.

20. The system of claim 17 wherein the set of tibial implants are of unitary construction.

21. The system of claim 17 wherein the set of tibial implants further comprise a fixed bearing attachment and a bearing attached thereto.

22. The system of claim 17 wherein the set of tibial implants further comprise a mobile bearing attachment and a bearing attached thereto.
