1. A vehicle system, comprising:
- an engine with a first cylinder and a second cylinder operating with different engine torques;
a motor coupled to said engine capable of absorbing torque and providing torque; and
a controller for varying torque of said motor to compensate for said torque difference so that a total engine and motor torque operates with increased balance.

15. A vehicle system, comprising:
-
an engine capable of operating with a first cylinder generating a first torque, and a second cylinder generating a second torque, where said first torque is greater than said second torque;
a motor coupled to said engine capable of absorbing torque and producing torque; and
a controller for operating said engine with said first cylinder generating said first torque and said second cylinder generating said second torque, and during said operation, varying torque of said motor to compensate for said torque difference, and varying whether said motor produces or absorbs torque based on an operating condition. - View Dependent Claims (16, 17, 18, 19, 20)

21. A computer storage medium having stored data representing instructions executable by a computer to control a vehicle system, the vehicle system comprising a engine having at least a first cylinder and a second cylinder and a motor coupled to said engine capable of absorbing torque and producing torque, the medium comprising:
-
code for operating said first cylinder lean and said second cylinder rich to generate exhaust heat to reduce sulfur contamination of an emission control device;
code for, during said sulfur contamination, varying torque of said motor to compensate for a torque difference between said first and second cylinders; and
code for varying whether said motor produces or absorbs torque based on battery condition; and
code for varying an engine airflow as said motor varies between producing and absorbing torque. - View Dependent Claims (22)
