Abstract

The disclosure relates to a portable and/or handheld bioagent detector and methodology described herein that is based in part on advanced Raman Chemical Imaging (“RCI”) technology. According to one embodiment of the present disclosure, the detection system may include a fiber array spectral translator (“FAST”) and may also include a probe which may include a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera. The probe alleviates the need to place the main instrument close to an unconfined release of a potentially hazardous material and facilitates analysis of a sample that is situated in a hard-to-reach location while minimizing contamination of the detector and operator.

Claims

1. A portable system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

an instrument module comprising a photon source, a spectrometer, and a photon detector;

a probe operably connected to said instrument module and independently movable with respect to said instrument module, said probe comprising a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera;

said photon source for providing a first plurality of photons to interact with said sample to thereby form a second plurality of photons;

an optical lens for collecting said second plurality of photons;

a filter for blocking a portion of said first plurality of photons present in an optical path with said second plurality of photons;

a fiber optic array for directing said second plurality of photons passing through said filter to said spectrometer; and

said photon detector receiving said second plurality of photons having passed through said spectrometer to thereby obtain a spectrum of said sample.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein said probe comprises a support for spacing apart said probe from said sample.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein said probe comprises a light shield.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein said CMOS camera takes an image of said sample.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein said fiber optic array is a fiber array spectral translator.

6. The system of claim 5 wherein optical fibers comprising the fiber optic array are arranged in a two-dimensional array at a first end and a one-dimensional array at a second end of the fiber optic array.

7. The system of claim 1 wherein said photon detector is a charge-coupled device.

8. The system of claim 1 wherein said spectrometer is a diffusion grating.

9. The system of claim 1 further comprising a microprocessor for analyzing an output signal from said photon detector.

10. The system of claim 1 further comprising a memory device for storing a spectrum of a biothreat agent.

11. The system of claim 10 further comprising a microprocessor for comparing an output signal from said photon detector with the stored spectrum in said memory device.

12. The system of claim 11 further comprising a display unit for displaying information based on said comparison.

13. The system of claim 12 further comprising a device for accepting input from a user.

14. The system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of photons has a wavelength approximately equal to 532 nanometers.

15. The system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of photons has a wavelength between 522 and 542 nanometers.

16. The system of claim 1 wherein said first plurality of photons has a wavelength in a range of wavelengths consisting of white light, near infrared light, infrared light, and ultraviolet light.

17. The system of claim 1 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons scattered by said sample.

18. The system of claim 17 wherein said scattered photons are Raman scattered photons.

19. The system of claim 1 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons emitted by said sample.

20. The system of claim 1 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons reflected by said sample.

21. The system of claim 1 wherein said sample is selected from the group consisting of:

biothreat agents, bacterial spores, live cells, virus, toxins, protozoan, protozoan cyst, and combinations thereof.

22. The system of claim 1 wherein the system is hand-held.

23. A handheld system for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

an instrument module comprising a photon source, a spectrometer, and a photon detector;

a probe operably connected to said instrument module and independently movable with respect to said instrument module, said probe comprising a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera;

said photon source for providing a first plurality of photons to interact with said sample to thereby form a second plurality of photons;

an optical lens for collecting said second plurality of photons;

a filter for blocking a portion of said first plurality of photons present in an optical path with said second plurality of photons;

a fiber optic array for directing said second photons passing through said filter to said spectrometer, wherein optical fibers comprising the fiber optic array are arranged in a two-dimensional array at a first end and a one-dimensional array at a second end of the fiber optic array, and wherein said first end accepts said second plurality of photons passing through said filter and said second end directs said second plurality of photons to said spectrometer;

said photon detector receiving said second plurality of photons having passed through said spectrometer to thereby obtain a spectrum of said sample;

a memory device for storing a spectrum of a biothreat agent;

a microprocessor for comparing an output signal from said photon detector with the stored spectrum in said memory device; and

a display unit for displaying information based on said comparison.

24. A method for obtaining a spectrum of a sample, comprising:

(a) providing a portable instrument module comprising a photon source, a spectrometer, and a photon detector;

(b) placing a probe near the sample wherein said probe is operably connected to said instrument module and independently movable with respect to said instrument module, said probe comprising a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera;

(c) illuminating said sample with a first plurality of photons to interact with said sample to thereby form a second plurality of photons, said first plurality of photons passing through said probe;

(d) collecting said second plurality of photons;

(e) blocking a portion of said first plurality of photons present in an optical path with said second plurality of photons; and

(f) directing said second plurality of photons to a spectrometer and then to a photon detector to thereby obtain a spectrum of said sample.

25. The method of claim 24 further comprising:

(g) storing a predetermined spectrum of a biothreat agent;

(h) comparing an output signal from said photon detector with the stored spectrum; and

(i) displaying information based on said comparison.

26. The method of claim 24 wherein said first plurality of photons has a wavelength approximately equal to 532 nanometers.

27. The method of claim 24 wherein said first plurality of photons has a wavelength in a range of wavelengths consisting of white light, near infrared light, infrared light, and ultraviolet light.

28. The method of claim 24 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons scattered by said sample.

29. The method of claim 28 wherein said scattered photons are Raman scattered photons.

30. The method of claim 24 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons emitted by said sample.

31. The method of claim 24 wherein said second plurality of photons comprises photons reflected by said sample.

32. The method of claim 24 wherein said sample is selected from the group consisting of:

biothreat agents, bacterial spores, live cells, virus, toxins, protozoan, protozoan cyst, and combinations thereof.
