Abstract

A method for selecting between a predetermined number of execution methods for an application program includes selecting, by a remote machine, a method of execution for an application program. Credentials associated with a local machine are received. An enumeration of a plurality of applications available to the local machine is provided, responsive to the received credentials. A request to execute an enumerated application is received. One of a predetermined number of methods for executing the enumerated application is selected responsive to a policy, the predetermined number of methods including a method for application streaming of the enumerated application.

Claims

1. A method for selecting, by a remote machine, a method of execution of an application program, the method comprising:

(a) receiving credentials;

(b) providing an enumeration of a plurality of applications available to a local machine, responsive to the received credentials;

(c) receiving a request to execute an enumerated application; and

(d) selecting one of a predetermined number of methods for executing the enumerated application, responsive to a policy, the predetermined number of methods including a method for application streaming of the enumerated application.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of providing access information associated with the enumerated application, the access information generated responsive to the selected method.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein step (c) further comprises receiving a request to execute an enumerated application, the enumerated application comprising a plurality of application files.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein step (c) further comprises receiving an identification of a server hosting a plurality of application files.

5. The method of claim 3, wherein step (c) further comprises receiving an identification of a location of a plurality of application files, the identification conforming to a Universal Naming Convention (UNC).

6. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting a method for application streaming of the enumerated application to the local machine.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting a method for execution of the enumerated application on a remote machine.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting a method for execution of the enumerated application on the local machine.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting a method for:

(d-1) streaming the enumerated application to a remote machine;

(d-2) executing the enumerated application on the remote machine; and

(d-3) providing to the local machine application-output data generated by the execution of the enumerated application.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein step (d) further comprises evaluating, before step (d-1), the local machine.

11. The method of claim 10, wherein step (d) further comprises determining to stream the enumerated application responsive to the evaluation.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein step (d-1) comprises streaming one of a plurality of files comprising the enumerated application.

13. The method of claim 9, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting the method responsive to an evaluation of the received credentials.

14. The method of claim 9, wherein step (d-3) further comprises providing the application-output data via a presentation level protocol.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein step (d-3) further comprises providing the application-output data via an Independent Computing Architecture presentation level protocol or a Remote Desktop Windows presentation level protocol or an X-Windows presentation level protocol.

16. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises identifying a version of the enumerated application to execute.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein step (d) further comprises identifying the version responsive to an identification of a characteristic of the local machine.

18. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises determining to execute a version of the enumerated application compatible with a characteristic of the local machine.

19. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises determining to execute a version of an enumerated application compatible with an operating system on the local machine.

20. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises determining to execute a version of an enumerated application compatible with a revision level of an operating system on the local machine.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises determining to execute a version of an enumerated application compatible with a language specified by an operating system on the local machine.

22. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises making an access control decision by applying a policy to the received credentials.

23. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises selecting the method responsive to an evaluation of the received credentials.

24. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises providing a launch ticket generated responsive to an evaluation of the received credentials, the launch ticket comprising authentication information.

25. The method of claim 1, wherein step (d) further comprises providing access information associated with the executable program, the access information including an identification of a location of the enumerated application, the identification conforming to a Universal Naming Convention (UNC).

26. The method of claim 1, wherein step (a) further comprises the steps of:

(a-1) receiving a request from a local machine for access to a resource;

(a-2) gathering, by a collection agent, credentials; and

(a-3) receiving the gathered credentials.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein step (a-2) further comprises gathering credentials by executing at least one script on the local machine.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein step (a-3) further comprises evaluating the local machine responsive to the received credentials.

29. The method of claim 26, wherein step (a-3) further comprises determining to stream the enumerated application responsive to the gathered credentials.

30. The method of claim 26, wherein step (a-3) comprises streaming one of a plurality of files comprising the enumerated application responsive to the gathered credentials.
