Abstract

A method, system, and apparatus for authenticating transactions and records is disclosed. A method for authenticating an information-based indicium includes receiving an article bearing a first identifier, wherein the first identifier substantially prevents a single user from accumulating multiple articles bearing the same first identifier, receiving a first digital certificate that is derived in part by encoding the first identifier, and comparing the first digital certificate and the first identifier to authenticate the information-based indicium.

Claims

1. A method for authenticating an information-based indicium, the method comprising:

receiving an article bearing a first identifier, wherein the first identifier substantially prevents a single user from accumulating multiple articles bearing the same first identifier;

receiving a first digital certificate that is derived in part by encoding the first identifier; and

comparing the first digital certificate and the first identifier to authenticate the information-based indicium.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the first identifier comprises a datum.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is structured.

4. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is numeric.

5. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is non-numeric.

6. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is alphanumeric.

7. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is an image.

8. The method of claim 2, wherein the datum is a bar code.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the article bears a second identifier.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the first digital certificate is derived in part by encoding both the first identifier and the second identifier.

11. The method of claim 9, further comprising:

receiving a second digital certificate derived in part by encoding the second identifier.

12. The method of claim 11, wherein the comparing comprises:

comparing the first digital certificate and the first identifier; and

comparing the second digital certificate and the second identifier.

13. The method of claim 1, wherein the first digital certificate is derived in part by encrypting the first identifier.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the comparing comprises:

decrypting the first digital certificate.

15. The method of claim 14, wherein the first identifier is encrypted with a private key, and the first digital certificate is decrypted with a public key corresponding to the private key.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the comparing comprises:

encrypting the first identifier.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein the first identifier is encrypted using a private key.

18. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

approving a transaction if the first digital certificate matches the first identifier; and

rejecting the transaction if the first digital certificate does not match the first identifier.

19. A computer readable medium containing an executable program for authenticating an information-based indicium, where the program performs the steps of:

receiving an article bearing a first identifier, wherein the first identifier substantially prevents a single user from accumulating multiple articles bearing the same first identifier;

receiving a first digital certificate that is derived in part by encoding the first identifier; and

comparing the first digital certificate and the first identifier to authenticate the information-based indicium.

20. A system for authenticating an information-based indicium, comprising:

an article bearing a first identifier, the first identifier substantially preventing a single user from accumulating multiple articles bearing the same first identifier; and

at least one computer adapted to receive the first identifier and to generate a first digital certificate that is derived at least in part by encoding the first identifier;

wherein the article and first digital certificate may be collectively presented for authenticating the information-based indicium by comparing the first identifier to the first digital certificate.
