Abstract

An antenna for directional electronic communication, a directional communication system, a method of conducting directional communication, a combat identification system and a method of identifying friendly forces. In one embodiment, the antenna includes: (1) a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof, (2) a Luneberg lens located within the conductive shield and (3) a feed horn located proximate a portion of the Luneberg lens that is distal from the opening.

Claims

1. An antenna for directional electronic communication, comprising:

a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof;

a Luneberg lens located within said conductive shield; and

a feed horn located proximate a portion of said Luneberg lens that is distal from said opening.

2. The antenna as recited in claim 1 further comprising a protective shell surrounding said conductive shield.

3. The antenna as recited in claim 2 wherein said protective shell substantially supports said conductive shield.

4. The antenna as recited in claim 2 wherein an outer diameter of said protective shell is at least five inches.

5. The antenna as recited in claim 2 further comprising an end cap coupled to said protective shell.

6. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said radio frequency absorptive material is a conductive foam.

7. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said radio frequency absorptive material and said conductive shield are longitudinally coextensive.

8. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said radio frequency absorptive material has a thickness between about 0.1 inch and about one inch.

9. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said radio frequency absorptive material has a thickness of about 0.375 inch.

10. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said antenna produces radio frequency signals having a carrier frequency of between about 4 GHz and about 30 GHz.

11. The antenna as recited in claim 10 wherein said carrier frequency is about 17 GHz.

12. The antenna as recited in claim 10 wherein said radio frequency signals bear digital data.

13. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said conductive shield comprises copper.

14. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said conductive shield has a thickness less than about 0.1 inch.

15. The antenna as recited in claim 1 further comprising a retainer ring bearing against said Luneberg lens.

16. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said Luneberg lens has a diameter between about four inches and about eight inches.

17. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said antenna has a 3 decibel beamwidth of about 70.

18. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said antenna has a null-to-null beamwidth of about 140.

19. The antenna as recited in claim 1 wherein said antenna is configured to communicate with a second directional antenna to form a point-to-point communication link.

20. A directional communication system, comprising:

a base station having an antenna including;

a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof,

a Luneberg lens located within said conductive shield, and

a feed horn located proximate a portion of said Luneberg lens that is distal from said opening; and

a plurality of transceivers configured to receive signals from said antenna based on a direction relative thereto.

21. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said base station is configured to control a direction of said antenna.

22. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said base station determines a radial direction of at least one of said plurality of transceivers based on a direction of said antenna.

23. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said base station is configured to determine a specific identity of said omnidirectional transceiver based on data received in said signals.

24. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said base station is configured to determine a range between said base station and said omnidirectional transceiver based on a time delay between a transmission of an interrogation signal and a receipt of said signals in response thereto.

25. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said signals bear digital data.

26. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said base station includes encryption and decryption circuitry.

27. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said plurality of transceivers include encryption and decryption circuitry.

28. The directional communication system as recited in claim 20 wherein said plurality of transceivers have unique identifying codes associated therewith.

29. A method of conducting directional communication, comprising:

transmitting outbound signals with a base station having an antenna including;

a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof,

a Luneberg lens located within said conductive shield, and

a feed horn located proximate a portion of said Luneberg lens that is distal from said opening; and

receiving inbound signals from at least one of a plurality of transceivers.

30. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising steering said antenna.

31. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising determining a direction of said at least one of said plurality of transceivers based on a direction of said antenna.

32. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising determining a specific identity of said omnidirectional transceiver based on data received in said signals.

33. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising determining a range between said base station and said omnidirectional transceiver based on a time delay between a transmission of an interrogation signal and a receipt of said signals in response thereto.

34. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein said outbound signals bear digital data.

35. The method as recited in claim 29 further comprising:

encrypting said outbound signals; and

decrypting said inbound signals.

36. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein said plurality of transceivers include encryption and decryption circuitry.

37. The method as recited in claim 29 wherein said plurality of transceivers have unique identifying codes associated therewith.

38. A combat identification system, comprising:

a base station configured to transmit a combat identification interrogation signal via an antenna including;

a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof,

a Luneberg lens located within said conductive shield, and

a feed horn located proximate a portion of said Luneberg lens that is distal from said opening; and

a plurality of omnidirectional transceivers configured to receive said combat identification interrogation signal from said antenna and respond with a secure identification signal based on a direction relative to said antenna.

39. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station is configured to control a direction of said antenna.

40. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station determines a radial direction of at least one of said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers based on a direction of said antenna.

41. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station is configured to determine a specific identity of said omnidirectional transceiver based on data received in said secure identification signal.

42. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station is configured to determine a range between said base station and said omnidirectional transceiver based on a time delay between a transmission of said combat identification interrogation signal and a receipt of said secure identification signal.

43. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said secure identification signal bears digital data.

44. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station is configured to employ encryption circuitry to generate said combat identification interrogation signal and decryption circuitry to verify said secure identification signal.

45. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers include encryption circuitry to generate said secure identification signal and decryption circuitry to interpret said combat identification interrogation signal.

46. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers have unique identifying codes associated therewith.

47. The combat identification system as recited in claim 38 wherein said base station is associated with a weapon system.

48. The combat identification system as recited in claim 47 wherein said antenna is steered as a function of a firing direction of said weapon system.

49. The combat identification system as recited in claim 48 wherein a receipt of said secure identification signal is capable of preventing said weapon system from being able to fire.

50. A method of combat identification, comprising:

transmitting a combat identification interrogation signal from a base station via an antenna including;

a conductive shield having an opening at an end thereof and a radio frequency absorptive material located on an inner surface thereof,

a Luneberg lens located within said conductive shield, and

a feed horn located proximate a portion of said Luneberg lens that is distal from said opening; and

receiving a secure identification signal from at least one of a plurality of omnidirectional transceivers configured to receive said combat identification interrogation signal from said antenna and respond with said secure identification signal based on a direction relative to said antenna.

51. The method as recited in claim 50 further comprising steering said antenna.

52. The method as recited in claim 50 further comprising determining a direction of said at least one of said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers based on a direction of said antenna.

53. The method as recited in claim 50 further comprising determining a specific identity of said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers based on data received in said signals.

54. The method as recited in claim 50 further comprising determining a range between said base station and said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers based on a time delay between a transmission of an interrogation signal and a receipt of said signals in response thereto.

55. The method as recited in claim 50 wherein said signals bear digital data.

56. The method as recited in claim 50 further comprising:

encrypting said outbound signals; and

decrypting said inbound signals.

57. The method as recited in claim 50 wherein said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers include encryption circuitry to generate said secure identification signal and decryption circuitry to interpret said combat identification interrogation signal.

58. The method as recited in claim 50 wherein said plurality of omnidirectional transceivers have unique identifying codes associated therewith.

59. The method as recited in claim 50 wherein said base station is associated with a weapon system.

60. The method as recited in claim 59 further comprising steering said antenna as a function of a firing direction of said weapon system.

61. The method as recited in claim 60 further comprising preventing said weapon system from being able to fire upon a receipt of said secure identification signal.
