Abstract

A self-fixating scaffold delivers therapeutic material to tissue for treating various diseases/conditions. A scaffold holds the therapeutic material and is implanted into the tissue. A fixation element anchors the scaffold in the tissue making the scaffold less likely to become dislodged.

Claims

1. A self-fixating scaffold comprising:

a scaffold for holding therapeutic material; and

a fixation element integrated with the scaffold, the fixation element for anchoring the scaffold to tissue.

2. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the scaffold is biodegradable.

3. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 2 wherein the scaffold is fabricated from at least one of:

PLA, PGA, PLGA, PEG, PCL, PLLA, polyurethane-PCL, polyurethane-PEO, PCLA, alginate, collagen, starch/cellulose, cellulose acetate, fibrin, platelet gel, hydrogel, gelatin, chitin, pectin, and hyaluronic acid.

4. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic material is biological material.

5. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic material is a pharmaceutical drug.

6. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic material is impregnated within the scaffold prior to anchoring the scaffold in the tissue.

7. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the therapeutic material is deliverable to the scaffold after the scaffold is anchored in the tissue.

8. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the fixation element is hollow and usable as an injection device.

9. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 and further comprising:

an extension extending from the fixation element, the extension usable as a lead.

10. The self-fixating element of claim 1 wherein the scaffold has a lattice structure for accomplishing directed cell growth.

11. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 1 wherein the scaffold and the fixation element are one of:

endocardially deliverable to cardiac tissue, transvascularly deliverable to cardiac tissue, epicardially deliverable to cardiac tissue.

12. A self-fixating scaffold comprising:

a scaffold for holding a biological material; and

a fixation element deliverable with the scaffold, the fixation element for anchoring the scaffold to tissue.

13. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 12 wherein the tissue comprises myocardial issue.

14. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 12 wherein the biological material treats at least one of the following conditions:

cardiac dysfunctions, neurological dysfunctions, endocrinological dysfunctions, diseased or damaged tissues, and cancer.

15. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 12 wherein a diameter of pores within the scaffold is between about 30 micrometers and 120 micrometers.

16. A self-fixating scaffold comprising:

a scaffold for holding therapeutic material;

a fixation element for anchoring the scaffold to tissue; and

an extension extending from the fixation element, the extension usable as a lead.

17. A self-fixating scaffold device comprising:

a scaffold for holding a therapeutic material; and

a skeleton removably implanted within the scaffold;

wherein the scaffold changes form upon removal of the skeleton to anchor the scaffold in tissue.

18. The self-fixating scaffold device of claim 17 wherein the skeleton is fabricated from a metallic material.

19. The self-fixating scaffold device of claim 17 wherein the therapeutic material is impregnated into the scaffold prior to delivery to the tissue.

20. The self-fixating scaffold of claim 17 wherein the skeleton comprises a lead for remote control implantation.
