Abstract

The invention is a cellphone base station transceiver capable of spontaneously and substantially automatically creating a new cell in a communication network. This new cell provides an indivival-Point-Of-Connect, which will be referred to as iPOC, for cell phone users that address many of these and other problems. The iPOC system, methods, devices, and computer programs provides wireless standard cell phone communication in areas where no cell phone service exists or within dead zones in existing cell phone network cells. Various embodiments of the iPOC include a portable, substantially-automated, user-installable dynamically-configurable cell phone base station device. Said iPOC system, methods, devices and computer programs address many of the current quality of service issues cell phone users commonly experience as well as other problems. IPOC provides wireless standard cell phone communication in areas where no cell phone service exists or within dead zones in existing cell phone network cells.

Claims

1. A cell phone base station transceiver device capable of spontaneously and substantially automatically extending a communication network'"'"'s coverage area by creating a new cell comprising:

electronic circuits used to implement the device functionality;

an antenna interconnected to said electronic circuits for generating electromagnetic signals for communication with a cell phone;

a communications interface for establishing a separate communication channel from said electronic circuits to communications network;

a power source for providing energy to allow said electronic circuits, said antenna, and said communications interface to function.

2. A device as in claim 1 with means for requesting and authorizing said cell phone base station transceiver be incorporated into said communications network as an active cell through which a cell phone can connect to and communicate with said communications network.

3. A device as in claim 1 with means for determining said base station'"'"'s geographic position and communicating its position to said communications network control station

4. A device in claim 3 where said base station'"'"'s geographic position is used to assist in determining if said base station transceiver should be permitted to become a functional element in said communications network to form a new cell.

5. A device as in claim 3 where means for determining said base station'"'"'s geographic position is a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver.

6. A device as in claim 1 where said separate communication channel is established through a communications network.

7. A device as in claim 1 where a communication channel is spontaneously and substantially automatically formed through multiple separate interconnected networks to facilitate said cell phone base station transceiver communication with said communications network.

8. A device as in claim 1 where said cell phone base station transceiver can monitor and record cell phone traffic statistics in its'"'"' vicinity generated by other communication networks for later retrieval.

9. A device as in claim 1 where said cell phone is in communication with said cell phone base station transceiver device which utilizes said separate communication channel to connect to a standard telephone network to operate as a cordless telephone to handle phone calls independent of a cell phone providers network.

10. A device as in claim 1 with means for distinguishing calls from a cell phone network intended for said cell phone from other telephone calls sharing said separate communication channel.

11. A device as in claim 1 where said base station transceiver is integrated into the electronics and executable code of an information processing device.

12. A device as in claim 1 where said communication network control station is configured as multiple control stations interconnected through separate communications channels with means for each control station to do preprocessing of access request data from said cell phone base station transceiver and with means for passing the processed data on to other control stations in said multiple interconnected control station configuration.

13. A system for extending a cell phone network'"'"'s service coverage area comprising:

a communications network;

a communications network control station that manages communication traffic through said communications network;

a cell phone capable of connecting to and communicating with said communications network when located within the coverage area of an active cell of said communications network;

a cell phone base station transceiver capable of spontaneously and substantially automatically extending said telephone network coverage area by creating a new cell in said communications network;

a separate communication channel through which said cell phone base station transceiver connects to and communicates with said communications network control station.

14. A system as in claim 13 where said communications network is a telephone network.

15. A system as in claim 13 where said communications network is a cell phone network.

16. A system as in claim 13 with means for requesting and authorizing said base station transceiver be incorporated into said communications network as an active cell through which said cell phone can connect to and communicate with said communications network.

17. A system as in claim 13 with means for determining said base station'"'"'s geographic position and communicating its position to said communications network control station

18. A system in claim 17 where said base station'"'"'s geographic position is used to assist in determining if said base station transceiver should be permitted to become a functional element in said communications network to form a new cell.

19. A system as in claim 18 where means for determining said base station'"'"'s geographic position is a GPS (Global Positioning System) receiver.

20. A system as in claim 13 where said communication channel is established through a separate communications network.

21. A system as in claim 20 where said separate communication network is a standard telephone system.

22. A system as in claim 20 where said separate communication network is a computer communications network.

23. A system as in claim 20 where said separate communication network is a CATV system.

24. A system as in claim 13 where said communication channel is spontaneously and substantially automatically formed through separate multiple interconnected networks to facilitate communication between said cell phone base station transceiver and communications network.

25. A system as is claim 13 where said cell phone is in communication with said cell phone base station transceiver which utilizes said separate communication channel to connect to a standard telephone network to operate as a cordless telephone independent to handle phone calls independent of a cell phone providers network.

26. A system as in claim 13 with means for distinguishing calls from a cell phone network intended for said cell phone from other telephone calls sharing said separate communication channel.

27. A system as in claim 13 where said base station transceiver is integrated into the electronics and executable code of an information processing device.

28. A system as in claim 13 where said communication network control station is configured as multiple control stations interconnected through separate communications channels with means for each control station to do preprocessing of access request data from said cell phone base station transceiver and for passing the processed data on to other control stations in said multiple interconnected control station configuration.

29. A method for spontaneously and substantially automatically creating a new cell in a communications network in order to increase the coverage area of said communication network and improve signal quality within the communications network.

30. A method as in claim 29 further comprising:

establishing a separate communication channel with a cell phone base station transceiver through which said base station requests to become part of said communications network;

analyzing data relative to a predefined criteria in order to determine if said base station should be allowed to be added to said communications network;

incorporating the base station into said communications network if the request to join meets said predefined criteria;

directing calls for said cell phone from said communications network through the base station to said cell phone;

directing calls from said cell phone through the base station to said communications network.

31. A method as in claim 30 with method for disconnecting said base station from said communications network when said communications network looses communication with said base station for a predetermined time period.

32. A method as in claim 30 where by said cell phone base station makes the request to become part of said communications network when it detects a cell phone in its'"'"' cell coverage area.

33. A method as in claim 30 where by said cell phone base station requests that cell phone traffic for a specific cell phone no longer be routed to it when it detects the cell phone is no longer within its'"'"' cell coverage area.

34. A method as in claim 30 for determining said base station'"'"'s geographic position and communicating its position to said communications network control station

35. A method as in claim 34 where said geographic position is used to assist in determining if said base station transceiver should be permitted to become a functional element in said communications network to form a new cell.

36. A method as in claim 30 where said communication channel is spontaneously and substantially automatically formed through multiple separate interconnected networks to facilitate said cell phone base station transceiver communication with said communications network.

37. A method as in claim 30 that records cell phone traffic statistics in its'"'"' vicinity generated by other communication networks for later retrieval.

38. A computer program for spontaneously and substantially automatically creating a new cell in a communications network in order to increase the coverage area of said communication network.

39. A computer program as in claim 38 and improve signal quality within the communications network comprising:

establishing a separate communication channel with a cell phone base station transceiver through which said base station requests to become part of said communications network;

analyzing data relative to a predefined criteria in order to determine if said base station should be allowed to be added to said communications network;

incorporating the base station into said communications network if the request to join meets said predefined criteria;

directing calls for said cell phone from said communications network through the base station to said cell phone;

directing calls from said cell phone through the base station to said communications network.

40. A computer program as in claim 39 where by said cell phone base station makes the request to become part of said communications network when it detects a cell phone in its'"'"' cell coverage area.

41. A computer program as in claim 39 where said communication channel is spontaneously and substantially automatically formed through multiple separate interconnected networks to facilitate said cell phone base station transceiver communication with said communications network.
