Abstract

A content storage and distribution networked system is described. The system includes at least one local network at a first physical premises, at least one audio-video storage device in communication with the local network, and at least two client devices in communication with the local network. The audio-video storage device is configured to store at least one media file, which includes at least video. The first client device is configured to enable the two client device to simultaneously access the at least one media file stored on the audio-video storage device. The system is configured to cause playback of media that is associated with the retrieved media file, and to enable the user of the first client device to operate on the playback of the media associated with the retrieved media file, using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

Claims

1. A content storage and distribution networked system comprising:

at least one local network at a first physical premises;

at least one audio-video storage device in communication with the local network and configured for storing at least one media file, the stored media file including at least video;

at least a first client device and a second client device in communication with the local network, and

 

the system being configured to

enable the first client device and the second client device to simultaneously access the at least one media file stored on the audio-video storage device,

cause playback of media associated with the retrieved media file, and

enable the user of the first client device to operate on the playback of the media associated with the retrieved media file, using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

2. The system of claim 1, further configured to support go-to operations, including at least one of a group consisting of a frame-number based operation and a time-code based operation.

3. The system of claim 1, further configured to enable a user of the first client device to cause:

storage of at least one media file at a remote storage device at a second physical premises, the remote storage device in communication with a wide area network, the media file including at least video; and

access to the media file stored at the remote storage device; and

playback, at the first physical premises, of media associated with the accessed media file.

4. The system of claim 1, further configured to

cause multiple playbacks of media associated with the media file accessed from the audio-video storage device.

5. The system of claim 1, further comprising:

a third client device in communication with a wide area network,

the system further being configured to enable a user of the third client device to cause;

access to the media file stored at the audio-video storage device, and

playback of media associated with the accessed media file.

The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one multimedia resource at a second physical premises in communication with a wide area network, the local network being in communication with the wide area network, wherein the system further is configured to cause access to the multimedia resource to cause playback, at the first physical premises, of media associated with the multimedia resource.

7. The system of claim 6, further configured to cause:

buffering of a flow of data associated with the media file from the multimedia resource; and

playback of data associated with the media file.

8. The system of claim 1, further configured for wireless communication.

9. The system of claim 1, further comprising at least one storage facility in communication with the local network, the storage facility configured to store at least one of pointers and hyperlinks to media files.

10. The system of claim 1, further configured to enable more than two users at respective client devices to teleconference using at least one communication type selected from a group consisting of video conferencing, application sharing, computer-integrated telephony, and real-time text.

11. A networking system comprising:

a local network at a first physical premises;

at least one audio-video storage device in communication with the local network and configured for storing at least one media file, the stored media file including at least video;

at least a first client device in communication with the local network, the first client device being configured to cause retrieval of at least one media file stored on the audio-video storage device,

 

wherein the system is configured to

tag data associated with the media file such that the tagged data can later be searched to access a selected portion of the media file; and

search the marked data to access the selected portion.

12. The system of claim 11, further configured to enable the user of the first client device to cause playback of the media associated with the retrieved media file, and to operate on the playback using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

13. The system of claim 11, further configured to enable a user of the first client device to cause:

storage of at least one media file at a remote storage device that is in communication with a wide area network, the media file including at least video;

access to the media file stored at the remote storage device; and

playback, at the first physical premises, of media associated with the accessed media file; and

operation on the playback of the media from the accessed media file using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

14. The system of claim 11, further configured to

enable simultaneous multiple access to at least one media file stored at the audio-video storage device, and

cause multiple playbacks of media associated with the media file accessed from the audio-video storage device.

15. The system of claim 11, further comprising:

a second client device at a second physical premises in communication with a wide area network,

the system further being configured to enable a user of the second client device to cause;

access to the media file stored at the audio-video storage device,

playback of media associated with the accessed media file, and

operation on the playback of the media from the accessed media file using at least the operations of start, stop, pause, fast forward, and reverse.

The system of claim 11, further comprising at least one multimedia resource at a second physical premises in communication with a wide area network, the local network being in communication with the wide area network, wherein the system is further configured to allow access to the multimedia resource to cause playback, at the first physical premises, of media that is associated with the multimedia resource.

18. The system of claim 11, further configured for wireless communication.

19. The system of claim 11, further comprising at least one storage facility in communication with the local network, the storage facility configured to store at least one of pointers and hyperlinks to media files in a plurality of file systems.

20. The system of claim 19, wherein the storage facility further configured to store time-sensitive media and time-insensitive media.

17. The system of claim 17, further configured to cause:

buffering of a flow of data associated with the media file from the multimedia resource; and

playback of data associated with the media file.
