Abstract

Methods, systems, and computer program products for providing and receiving content over a wireless communication system, including off-line presentation of stored retrieved content.

Claims

1. A computer program product comprising a computer readable medium including computer program logic recorded thereon that causes a computer system to receive information objects and to send requests for information objects over a wireless network, the computer program logic comprising:

a transport function that causes the computer system to receive a first information object from a remote information object source over a wireless network and to store the received first information object in a storage device of the computer system, wherein the first information object includes information for construction of requests for additional information objects from the remote information object source; and

a user interface function that causes the computer system to present content from the first information object, and to construct one or more requests for one or more additional information objects from the construction information in response to user input;

wherein the transport function causes the computer system to send the one or more requests to the remote source over the wireless network, to receive the requested one or more additional information objects from the remote source over the wireless network, and to store the one or more additional information objects in the storage device;

wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to present content from the one or more additional information objects; and

wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to present the stored information content from the first and the one or more additional information objects when the computer system is not in communication with the wireless network.

2. A computer program product comprising a computer readable medium including computer program logic recorded thereon that causes a computer system to receive information objects and to send requests for information objects over a wireless network, the computer program logic comprising:

a transport function that causes the computer system to receive a first information object from a remote information object source over a wireless network and to store the received first information object for use off-line, wherein the first information object includes information for construction of requests for additional information objects from the remote information object source; and

a user interface function that causes the computer system to present content from the first information object and that causes the computer system to construct one or more requests for one or more additional information objects from the information from the first information object in response to user input;

wherein the transport function causes the computer system to send the one or more requests to the remote source over the wireless network, to receive the requested one or more additional information objects from the remote source over the wireless network, and to store the one or more additional information objects; and

wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to present content from the one or more additional information objects.

3. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the first information object includes a form for request of additional information objects.

4. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the one or more requests for additional information objects includes a request for a form.

5. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to information object selections.

6. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to search requests.

7. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to information requests.

8. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to catalog browsing.

9. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to shopping.

10. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to order entry.

11. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to transaction entry.

12. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the user interface function is specific to the remote source.

13. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the computer program product is operable with any of a plurality of independent remote sources.

14. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein:

the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes a listing of features available from the remote source; and

the user interface causes the computer system to present the listing of features, to receive user selections of one or more of the features, and to construct one or more requests for the one or more user-selected features.

15. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein:

the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes markup/formatting associated with the information object content; and

the user interface function causes the computer system to present the information object content in accordance with the associated markup/formatting.

16. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes word processing markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

17. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes spreadsheet markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

18. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes database markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

19. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes multimedia markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

20. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes video markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

21. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes audio markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

22. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes HyperText Markup Language (HTML) markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

23. The computer program product according to claim 15, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to receive an information object from the remote source that includes one or more of word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia, video, audio, sound, or HyperText Markup Language (HTML) markup/formatting associated with the information object content.

24. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to receive user input selecting content for presentation and to present the user-selected content.

25. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to receive user input selecting content for presentation and causes the computer system to present the selected content when the computer system is not in communication with the wireless network.

26. The computer program product according to claim 25, wherein the selected content is content obtained from the remote information object source.

27. The computer program product according to claim 25, wherein the user interface function causes the computer system to construct the one or more requests for the one or more additional information objects offline and to send the one or more requests to the remote source during a subsequent connection.

28. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein:

the user interface function causes the computer system to construct at least one of the requests to include a generic name for a group of information objects; and

the transport function causes the computer system to send the at least one request that includes the generic name to the remote source, and to receive the group of any objects currently associated with the generic name from the remote source.

29. The computer program product according to claim 28, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to resend the at least one request that includes the generic name to the remote source and to receive any additional objects or updated objects currently associated with the generic name.

30. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to terminate and reactivate communication with the wireless network during a time period between receiving the first information object from the remote information object source and sending the one or more requests to the remote source.

31. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to terminate and reactivate communication with the wireless network a plurality of times.

32. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to terminate and reactivate communication with the wireless network a plurality of times in support of an interactive session.

33. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to terminate and reactivate communication with the wireless network based on information included in information objects received from the remote information object source.

34. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to activate communication with the wireless network for transfer of at least one information object and to terminate the communication when the transfer is complete.

35. The computer program product according to claim 34, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to activate the communication and to terminate the communication without interfering with user interaction.

36. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to automatically activate communication with the wireless network for transfer of at least one information object and to automatically terminate the communication when the transfer is complete.

37. The computer program product according to claim 36, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to automatically activate the communication and to automatically terminate the communication without interfering with user interaction.

38. The computer program product according to claim 2, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to activate communication with the wireless network in accordance with a schedule of information object transfers

39. The computer program product according to claim 38, wherein the transport function causes the computer system to terminate the communication upon completion of each of the information object transfers.

40. A method comprising:

receiving a first information object from a remote information object source over a wireless network;

storing the received first information object for use off-line, wherein the first information object includes information for construction of requests for additional information objects from the remote information object source;

presenting content from the first information object;

constructing one or more requests for one or more additional information objects from the information from the first information object in response to user input;

sending the one or more requests to the remote source over the wireless network;

receiving the requested one or more additional information objects from the remote source over the wireless network

storing the one or more additional information objects; and

presenting content from the one or more additional information objects.

41. A method comprising:

receiving a first information object from a remote information object source over a wireless network;

storing the received first information object in a storage device, wherein the first information object includes information for construction of requests for additional information objects from the remote information object source;

presenting content from the first information object;

constructing one or more requests for one or more additional information objects from the construction information in response to user input;

sending the one or more requests to the remote source over the wireless network;

receiving the requested one or more additional information objects from the remote source over the wireless network;

storing the one or more additional information objects in the storage device;

presenting content from the one or more additional information objects; and

presenting the stored information content from the first and the one or more additional information objects when not in communication with the wireless network.

42. The method according to claim 41, wherein the first information object includes a form for request of additional information objects.

43. The method according to claim 41, wherein the one or more requests for additional information objects includes a request for a form.

44. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to information object selections.

45. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to search requests.

46. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to information requests.

47. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to catalog browsing.

48. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to shopping.

49. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to order entry.

50. The method according to claim 41, wherein at least one of the one or more requests for additional information objects relates to transaction entry.

51. The method according to claim 41, wherein the user interface function is specific to the remote source.

52. The method according to claim 41, wherein:

receiving the first information object includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes a listing of features available from the remote source,

presenting the content from the first information object includes presenting the listing of features, and

constructing the one or more requests includes receiving user selections of one or more of the features and constructing one or more requests for the one or more user-selected features.

53. The method according to claim 41, wherein:

receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes markup/formatting associated with content of the information object; and

presenting content from the one or more additional information objects includes presenting the content of the information object in accordance with the associated markup/formatting.

54. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes word processing markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

55. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes spreadsheet markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

56. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes database markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

57. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes multimedia markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

58. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes video markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

59. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes audio markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

60. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes HyperText Markup Language (HTML) markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

61. The method according to claim 53, wherein receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving an information object from the remote source that includes one or more of word processing, spreadsheet, database, multimedia, video, audio, sound, or HyperText Markup Language (HTML) markup/formatting associated with the content of the information object.

62. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

receiving user input selecting content for presentation; and

presenting the user-selected content.

63. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

receiving user input selecting content for presentation; and

presenting the selected content when the computer system is not in communication with the wireless network.

64. The method according to claim 63, wherein the selected content is content obtained from the remote information object source.

65. The method according to claim 63, further comprising:

constructing the one or more requests for the one or more additional information objects offline; and

sending the one or more requests to the remote source during a subsequent connection.

66. The method according to claim 41, wherein:

constructing the one or more requests includes constructing at least one of the requests to include a generic name for a group of information objects,

sending the one or more requests includes sending the at least one request that includes the generic name to the remote source, and

receiving the requested one or more additional information objects includes receiving the group of any objects currently associated with the generic name from the remote source.

67. The method according to claim 66, further comprising:

resending the at least one request that includes the generic name to the remote source; and

receiving any additional objects or updated objects currently associated with the generic name.

68. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

terminating and reactivating communication with the wireless network during a time period between receiving the first information object from the remote information object source and sending the one or more requests to the remote source.

69. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

terminating and reactivating communication with the wireless network a plurality of times.

70. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

terminating and reactivating communication with the wireless network a plurality of times in support of an interactive session.

71. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

terminating and reactivating communication with the wireless network based on information included in information objects received from the remote information object source.

72. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

activating communication with the wireless network for transfer of at least one information object; and

terminating the communication when the transfer is complete.

73. The method according to claim 72, wherein activating the communication and terminating the communication are performed without interfering with user interaction.

74. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

automatically activating communication with the wireless network for transfer of at least one information object; and

automatically terminating the communication when the transfer is complete.

75. The method according to claim 74, wherein automatically activating the communication and automatically terminating the communication are performed without interfering with user interaction.

76. The method according to claim 41, further comprising:

activating communication with the wireless network in accordance with a schedule of information object transfers

77. The method according to claim 76, further comprising:

terminating the communication upon completion of each of the information object transfers.
