Abstract

An all-optical cross-connect switching system provides optical switching that may reduce processing requirements by three orders of magnitude over conventional techniques by associating at least one optical detector with an optical beam steering element. In one embodiment, a first beam steering element, having a reflective surface in optical association with a first optical fiber array, and a second beam steering element, having a reflective surface in optical association with a second optical fiber array, are optically arranged to direct an optical beam from a first optical fiber in the first optical fiber array to a second optical fiber in the second optical fiber array. The optical detector provides information about a first position of the optical beam on the second beam steering element. Based on this information, the angle of the first beam steering element may be adjusted to cause the optical beam to change to a second position on the second beam steering element.

Claims

1. An optical cross-connect switching system, comprising:

a first beam steering element with a reflective surface in optical association with a first optical fiber array;

a second beam steering element with a reflective surface in optical association with a second optical fiber array, the second beam steering element optically arranged with the first beam steering element to direct an optical beam from a first optical fiber in the first optical fiber array to a second optical fiber in the second optical fiber array; and

at least one optical detector, associated with the second beam steering element, adapted to provide information about an angle of the first beam steering element.

2. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the optical detector is integral to the second beam steering element.

3. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 2 wherein the second beam steering element comprises semiconductor material and wherein the optical detector is configured of the semiconductor material.

4. The optical cross-connect switching system according to claim 3 wherein the optical detector comprises multiple regions separated by gaps.

5. The optical cross-connect switching system according to claim 2 wherein the second beam steering element comprises a reflective surface covering at least a portion of the optical detector.

6. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 1 further comprising a controller coupled to the optical detector that controls the angle of the first beam steering element.

7. The optical cross-connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the first and second beam steering elements are microelectro-mechanical system (MEMS) beam steering elements.

8. The optical cross-connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the beam steering elements comprise two, single-axis, beam steering elements.

9. The optical cross-connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the first and second beam steering elements comprise a reflective surface formed by a material selected from a group consisting of at least one of the following:

metal or dielectric.

10. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 1 further comprising a second optical detector associated with the second optical fiber, the second optical detector adapted to provide information about the angle of the second beam steering element.

11. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 10 further comprising a controller coupled to the second optical detector that controls the angle of the second beam steering element.

The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the first and second beam steering elements are among respective arrays of first and second beam steering elements configured to direct optical beams from optical fibers in the first optical fiber array to optical fibers in the second optical fiber array.

13. The optical cross connect switching system according to claim 1 wherein the first and second optical fiber arrays are multi-dimensional arrays.

14. A method for steering an optical beam, comprising:

determining a first position of an optical beam on a beam steering element; and

causing the optical beam to change from the first position to a second position on the beam steering element.

15. The method according to claim 14 wherein determining the first position of the optical beam comprises optically detecting the position of the optical beam.

16. The method according to claim 14 wherein causing the optical beam to change from the first position to the second position on the first beam steering element comprises adjusting an angle of a second beam steering element configured to steer the optical beam from the first position to the second position on the first beam steering element.

17. The method according to claim 16 wherein the first and second beam steering elements are among respective arrays of first and second beam steering elements configured to direct optical beams from optical fibers in the first optical fiber array to optical fibers in the second optical fiber array.

18. The method according to claim 14 wherein the second position is the center of the beam steering element.

19. The method according to claim 14, further comprising:

determining a characteristic of an optical beam in relation to an optical fiber aperture; and

adjusting an angle of the beam steering element to change the characteristic of the optical beam in relation to the optical fiber aperture based on the characteristic of the optical beam in relation to the optical fiber aperture.

20. The method according to claim 19 wherein the characteristic is optical power.

21. The method according to claim 19 wherein the characteristic of the optical beam is an additional modulation added to the optical signal.

22. A method for manufacturing an optical beam steering element, comprising:

configuring an optical detector of semiconductor material;

associating a reflective surface with the semiconductor material; and

configuring at least a portion of the semiconductor material to be a movable beam steering element.

23. The method according to claim 22 wherein associating a reflective surface with the semiconductor material comprises depositing a metal or dielectric.

24. The method according to claim 22 wherein associating a reflective surface with the semiconductor material comprises coupling a metal or dielectric to the semiconductor material.

25. The method according to claim 22 wherein configuring an optical detector of semiconductor material comprises fabricating a semiconductor detector in the semiconductor material.

26. The method according to claim 22 wherein the semiconductor detector comprises an n-electrode, a p-electrode, and respective electrical contacts configured to support connection to an electrical circuit.

27. The method according to claim 22 wherein configuring at least a portion of the semiconductor material to be a movable beam steering element comprises etching the semiconductor material.
